Late-Stage Research Development and Demonstration Sub-Activities Updates

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), in collaboration with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and the Hummingbird Firm (a specialized consulting firm focused on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations), has initiated a national initiative known as the Heat Pump (HP) and Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) Field Validation Partnership. This effort involves active participation from numerous critical entities involved in research and market transformation within the field.

Visual Brick model authoring tool for building metadata standardization

In this study, the Brick ontology is a unified semantic metadata standard for building assets and their relationships, serving as a key enabler for effective interoperability and automation of building systems and analytics. However, creating a Brick model, in other words, standard semantic metadata based on the Brick ontology for a building dataset, can be a complex task. This paper presents two case studies of the creation of Brick models for real-world residential and commercial building datasets, highlighting the challenges during the Brick model creation process. Additionally, the paper introduces VizBrick, an interactive authoring tool for creating semantic building metadata. VizBrick facilitates the creation of Brick models by providing an intuitive visual interface and interactive capabilities, such as keyword search, automatic mapping suggestions, and recommendations. The use of VizBrick is shown to significantly reduce the time and effort required during the Brick model creation process.

Assessment of Existing OpenStudio Measures: Reviews, Interviews, and Future Developments

OpenStudio Measure development is continuously in progress and greatly propelled by the collaborative efforts within the building energy modeling community. To ensure the widespread adoption and benefit of OpenStudio Measures, developers must understand the current status of Measure development and the needs of OpenStudio Measure users. The first step involves a comprehensive review of existing content to prevent redundancy and gain insights into how OpenStudio Measures are used in the building energy modeling community. This knowledge can then be integrated into the Measure development process, and the expertise of practitioners and OpenStudio Measure users can be leveraged to shape future Measures. Numerous OpenStudio Measures have been created and shared on the Building Component Library (BCL). The BCL is an open-source repository housing various OpenStudio-related resources, including building component blocks, descriptive metadata, and Measures describing modifications to building energy models. The OpenStudio Measures in BCL encompass a wide range of energy conservation Measures from basic lighting power reduction to complex HVAC model transformation. They also enable users to generate customized reports and facilitate the integration of energy simulation with other analytical processes. This report presents review of 272 currently available OpenStudio Measures in BCL. The OpenStudio Measures were reviewed by category and subcategory. These Measures are summarized by their functionalities and keywords. To gain insights into how OpenStudio Measures are used in building energy modeling community, interviews were conducted. A total of 12 interview responses were collected from 6 individuals in the industry and 6 individuals in academia. The knowledge acquired from reviewing the existing Measures and interview results will be integrated into the Measure development process, and the expertise of practitioners and OpenStudio Measure users will be leveraged to shape future Measures.

Reported Energy and Cost Savings from the DOE ESPC IDIQ Program: FY 2022

The objective of this work was to determine the realization rate of energy and cost savings from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) program based on information reported by the energy services companies (ESCOs) that are carrying out ESPC projects at federal sites. Information was extracted from 190 measurement and verification (M&V) reports covering 182 projects to determine reported, estimated, and guaranteed cost savings and the associated reported and estimated energy savings for the previous contract performance year. This report covers projects that had a performance year ending in fiscal year 2021, between October 1, 2021 and September 30, 2022, and had an M&V report issued. Additionally, the annual cost to perform M&V was extracted from the individual project Task Order (TO) Schedules.
