Complex carbonate phases drive geologic CO2 mineralization

Abstract Geologic carbon sequestration in mafic and ultramafic reservoirs is a scalable strategy for carbon dioxide removal, offering permanent storage via mineralization as stable carbonates. However, there is limited information on the structure and composition of key mineralization endpoints during sequestration. Here, we unravel the atomic structure, composition, and nanoscale morphology of carbonates recovered from a field-scale demonstration of CO 2 mineralization in basalt. Using transmission electron microscopy, we mapped mineralogical variations from the initial to later stages of subsurface carbonate growth and identified a previously unknown cation-ordered ankerite phase that exerts a primary control over carbonation processes. This study has provided a new understanding of subsurface carbonation pathways which will impact the parameterization of predictive geochemical models for future sequestration efforts in basalt formations.

Chemical information from XPS: Theory and experiment for Ni(OH) 2

For this work, the features and the electronic character of the states for the Ni 2p x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of Ni(OH) 2 were analyzed. This detailed analysis is based on ab initio molecular orbital wavefunctions for a cluster model of Ni(OH) 2 . The theory is validated by comparison with experiment. Then, advanced methods are used to explain and contrast the properties of different groups of ionic states. An important conclusion is that in most cases, the ionic states cannot be described with a single configuration or determinant. Despite this essential many-body character of the XPS, we demonstrate that it is possible to understand the origin of the main and satellite XPS features in terms of their orbital character.

Global rare earth element resources: A concise review

Deposits enriched in rare earth elements (REEs) are abundant and diverse in mineralogy, but those of current economic value have extremely limited geographic distribution. Due to rapidly increasing demand and concerns about supply chain security, new and improved methods of prospecting, beneficiation, separation, purification, and recycling are needed. By overviewing the types and geographic distribution of REE reserves globally, their petrogenesis and major mineralogic assemblages, this review aims to provide a foundation for posing new directions for research and development in these areas. In conclusion, our review also seeks to provide a concise summary of important background information that is accessible to researchers from a variety of disciplines who are seeking to engage in this rapidly expanding field.
