Evaluation of an x-ray multilayer mirror for radiography at sub-1-keV photon energies

An x-ray multilayer mirror on a spherical substrate designed for near-normal incidence with a photon energy of ~738 eV (F He α ) was procured and tested. This device is intended to be used for in-flight radiography of the shell in inertial confinement fusion experiments with cryogenic targets on the OMEGA laser at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics. Experiments in self-emission on a small (~10 J) laser system showed that the reflectivity of the mirror is high enough to record an image at laser energies as low as 0.1 J. Furthermore, a second set of tests in backlighting geometry on a larger (kJ)-scale, short-pulse laser yielded usable radiographs with laser energies as low as 40 J with a spatial resolution of ~10 μm.

Pycnonuclear reaction rates for binary ionic mixtures

Through a combination of compositional scaling arguments and examinations of Monte Carlo simulation results for the interparticle separations in binary-ionic mixture (BIM) solids, we have derived parameterized expressions for the BIM pycnonuclear rates as generalizations of those in one-component solids obtained previously by Salpeter and Van Horn and by Ogata et al. We have thereby discovered a catalyzing effect of the heavier elements, which enhances the rates of reactions among the lighter elements when the charge ratio exceeds a critical value of approximately 2.3.

The shear modulus of the neutron star crust and nonradial oscillations of neutron stars

Shear moduli are calculated for bcc crystalline and rapidly quenched Coulomb solids produced by the Monte Carlo simulation method. The shear moduli are calculated up to the transition temperature and include the effects of thermal fluctuations. An effective shear modulus appropriate to an approximate 'isotropic' body is introduced. It is found that the values of the 'average shear modulus' for the quenched solids remain about the same as those for the corresponding bcc crystals, although the individual shear moduli of the former, disordered solids deviate considerably from the cubic symmetry of the latter. These results are applied to analyses of neutron star oscillations. It is found that the periods of the two interfacial modes are increased by about 10 percent compared to previous results, and that s-mode periods are increased by about 30 percent. The periods of the f and p modes are hardly affected at all. The surface g-mode periods are not greatly affected, while the t-mode periods are increased by 20-25 percent.

Theory of interparticle correlations in dense, high-temperature plasmas. V - Electric and thermal conductivities

Ichimaru et al. (1985) have developed a general theory in which the interparticle correlations in dense, high-temperature multicomponent plasmas were formulated systematically over a wide range of plasma parameters. The present paper is concerned with an extension of this theory, taking into account the problems of the electronic transport in such high-density plasmas. It is shown that the resulting theory is capable of describing the transport coefficients accurately over a wide range of the density and temperature parameters. Attention is given to electric and thermal conductivities, generalized Coulomb logarithms, a comparison of the considered theory with other theories, and a comparison of the theory with experimental results.

Parametrized equation of state for electron liquids in the Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjolander aproximation

Results are reported of a theoretical study of an equation of state for electron liquids (one-component plasmas of electrons embedded in a uniform neutralizing background of positive charges), where there is an interplay between the strong Coulomb-coupling effect and the degrees of Fermi degeneracy. Calculations are based on the Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjolander approximation (1968). The calculated results are parametrized in the form of analytic formulas for the interaction and excess free energies, which are applicable over a wide range of parameters as long as the electrons are in a paramagnetic fluid state. Unlike the present study, earlier studies concentrated on plasmas where the Fermi degeneracy parameter tended either to zero or to infinity, thus excluding many actual plasmas (stellar interiors, heavy planets such as Jupiter, plasmas in projected inertial confinement fusion experiments, and the liquid metals).
