Distributed parameter modelling of flexible spacecraft: Where's the beef?

This presentation discusses various misgivings concerning the directions and productivity of Distributed Parameter System (DPS) theory as applied to spacecraft vibration control. We try to show the need for greater cross-fertilization between DPS theorists and spacecraft control designers. We recommend a shift in research directions toward exploration of asymptotic frequency response characteristics of critical importance to control designers.

Active structural control for the mini-MAST and ACES structures

Two experiments based on the maximum entropy/optimal projection design approach are discussed which were conducted by Harris Corporation as part of the NASA Controls Structures Interaction Guest Investigator program. The design equations consist of four coupled matrix equations which specialize to the standard linear-quadratic Guassian Riccati equations, when the plant is known perfectly and a full order controller is desired. These experiments demonstrate successful control system design and implementation for flexible structures.

Maximum Entropy/Optimal Projection (MEOP) control design synthesis: Optimal quantification of the major design tradeoffs

The underlying philosophy and motivation of the optimal projection/maximum entropy (OP/ME) stochastic modeling and reduced control design methodology for high order systems with parameter uncertainties are discussed. The OP/ME design equations for reduced-order dynamic compensation including the effect of parameter uncertainties are reviewed. The application of the methodology to several Large Space Structures (LSS) problems of representative complexity is illustrated.

Application of the Maximum Entropy/optimal Projection Control Design Approach for Large Space Structures

The underlying philosophy and motivation of the optimal projection/maximum entropy (OP/ME) stochastic modelling and reduced order control design method for high order systems with parameter uncertainties are discussed. The OP/ME design equations for reduced-order dynamic compensation including the effect of parameter uncertainties are reviewed and the application of the methodology to several large space structure (LSS) problems of representative complexity is illustrated.

Vibration control experiment design for the 15-m hoop/column antenna

A test program is designed for a ground-based vibration control experiment utilizing as the test article the 15-M Hoop/Column Antenna. Overall objectives of the designed ground-based test program include: (1) the validation of large space structure (LSS) control systemm techniques; (2) the validation of LSS parameter identification techniques: (3) the evaluation of actuator of actuator and sensor placement methodology; and (3) the validation of LSS computer models. Critical concerns in LSS Controls and Dynamics are: low frequency vibrational modes, close modal spacing, parameter uncertainties, controller software limitations, nonlinearities and coupling of modes through damping. Analytical results are presented which include compensator designs for varying compensator order.

Minimum information modelling of structural systems with uncertain parameters

Work is reviewed wherein the design of active structural control is formulated as the mean-square optimal control of a linear mechanical system with stochastic parameters. In practice, a complete probabilistic description of model parameters can never be provided by empirical determinations, and a suitable design approach must accept very limited a priori data on parameter statistics. In consequence, the mean-square optimization problem is formulated using a complete probability assignment which is made to be consistent with available data but maximally unconstrained otherwise through use of a maximum entropy principle. The ramifications of this approach for both robustness and large dimensionality are illustrated by consideration of the full-state feedback regulation problem.

Fixed-order dynamic compensation through optimal projection

This paper reviews a formulation for the design of fixed-order dynamic compensation for flexible mechanical systems which is based upon explicit optimality conditions derived under the minimum data/maximum entropy stochastic modelling approach. The optimality conditions give rise to the novel concept of "optimal projection' which provides significant insight with regard to the compensator structure and permits earlier, more restricted and/or ad hoc design schemes to be seen as special cases of the present formulation.

Structural modelling and control design under incomplete parameter information: The maximum-entropy approach

A stochastic structural control model is described. In contrast to the customary deterministic model, the stochastic minimum data/maximum entropy model directly incorporates the least possible a priori parameter information. The approach is to adopt this model as the basic design model, thus incorporating the effects of parameter uncertainty at a fundamental level, and design mean-square optimal controls (that is, choose the control law to minimize the average of a quadratic performance index over the parameter ensemble).
