Effects of transverse temperature field nonuniformity on stress in silicon sheet growth

Stress and strain rate distributions are calculated using finite element analysis for steady-state growth of thin silicon sheet temperature nonuniformities imposed in the transverse (sheet width) dimension. Significant reductions in residual stress are predicted to occur for the case where the sheet edge is cooled relative to its center provided plastic deformation with high creep rates is present.

The Effect of Creep on the Residual Stresses Generated During Silicon Sheet Growth

The modeling of stresses generated during the growth of thin silicon sheets at high speeds is an important part of the EFG technique since the experimental measurement of the stresses is difficult and prohibitive. The residual stresses which arise in such a growth process lead to serious problems which make thin Si ribbons unsuitable for fabrication. The constitutive behavior is unrealistic because at high temperature (close to the melting point) Si exhibits considerable creep which significantly relaxes the residual stresses. The effect of creep on the residual stresses generated during the growth of Si sheets at high speeds was addressed and the basic qualitative effect of creep are reported.

Bifurcation analysis of the onset of necking in an elastic/plastic cylinder under uniaxial tension

The bifurcation problem governing the onset of axisymmetric necking in a circular cylindrical specimen in uniaxial tension is analysed. The specimen is made of an incompressible elastic/plastic material. One end is subject to a prescribed uniform axial displacement relative to the other and both ends are shear free. The true stress at bifurcation is greater than the stress at which the maximum load is attained by an amount which depends on (a) the radius to length ratio of the specimen, (b) the ratio of the elastic shear modulus to the tangent modulus, and (c) the derivative of the tangent modulus with respect to the stress. Bifurcation takes place immediately following attainment of the maximum load when the specimen is sufficiently slender.

Plastic buckling

The present article is concerned mainly with the post-bifurcation and imperfection-sensitivity aspects of plastic buckling. A simple two-degree-of-freedom model is used to introduce post-bifurcation behavior and a second model illustrates features of the behavior of continuous solids and structures. Hill's bifurcation criterion for a class of three-dimensional solids is applied to the Donnell-Mushtari-Vlasov (DMV) theory of plates and shells. A general treatment of the initial post-bifurcation behavior of plates and shells is given within the context of the DMV theory. This is illustrated by problems involving columns and circular plates under radial compression. Numerical results are given for a column under axial compression, a circular plate under radial compression, and spherical and cylindrical shells.

Imperfection-sensitivity in the plastic range

The effect of small imperfections on the buckling of continuous structures loaded into the plastic range is studied. A simple model study is presented and several additional examples are discussed. The role of the load at which elastic unloading first occurs is emphasized, and a general asymptotic analysis is given for the behavior prior to the onset of elastic unloading for a class of elastic-plastic solids subject to loads characterized by a single load parameter. Asymptotic imperfection-sensitivity formulae are obtained whose features are similar to analogous formulae for elastic structures.

Buckling of circular cylindrical shells under axial compression.

The infinitely long cylindrical shell under axial compression with axisymmetric sinusoidal imperfections is considered. The bifurcation problem is formulated exactly, and a complete family of buckling modes is identified. Koiter's (1963) upper bound pertains to the critical stress associated with one restricted set of modes, and the critical stress for a set of long wavelength modes reproduces some numerical results obtained by Almroth (1966). The initial postbuckling analysis is also formulated exactly. An exact analytical solution is obtained for the limiting case of modes with infinitely long wavelengths, and numerical analysis is used to solve the equations for the other cases. An appendix gives the details of the analysis.
