ORFEUS observations of AM Herculis

The Orbiting and Retrievable Far and Extreme UV Spectrometer (ORFEUS) telescope has observed AM Her in its high optical state at high spectral resolution in the 912-1176 A band. Spectra at two phases show O VI emission lines with a broad and narrow component structure similar to that of the optical emission lines. We find that the O VI lines are optically thick, and that the densities in the broad- and narrow-component regions differ by a factor of 100. The most puzzling aspect of the observations is the continuum, which is softer than expected, but does not show definite Lyman absorption lines. We discuss the implications for the 'soft X-ray excess' of AM Her stars.

The albedo and scattering phase function of interstellar dust and the diffuse background at far-ultraviolet wavelengths

The diffuse FUV background in a variety of targets has been observed with a nebular spectrometer designed specifically to eliminate potential sources of contamination. The intensity of the background near the Galactic plane is found to be much lower than previously published. The data are analyzed using a radiative transfer model with a limited set of free parameters, including those which describe the scattering properties of the interstellar dust. Strong evidence is presented that scattering of starlight by Galactic dust associated with neutral hydrogen produces the major part of the FUV diffuse background. Few assumptions are necessary to conclude that the albedo of the grains is low in the FUV. The grains, at least at high latitude, scatter fairly isotropically in the FUV. The low FUV albedo and the usual phase factor g are not consistent with predictions of standard models for the size distribution and composition of interstellar grains.

Design of spherical varied line-space gratings for a high-resolution EUV spectrometer

A highly efficient EUV spectrograph is designed for high-resolution spectroscopic observation. The spectrograph is designed for point source astronomy in a 40-120 nm bandpass and is to be ORFEUS (Orbiting Retrievable Far and Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer), scheduled for launch as the first payload of a German space platform Astro-SPAS (Astronomy Shuttle Pallet Satellite). The design uses spherical varied line-space (SVLS) grating to minimize astigmatism, coma, and spherical aberration. The effectiveness and practical feasibility of the design is proved by an SVLS grating for visible use. The image focusing properties of the SVLS grating for ORFEUS are compared to those with toroidal uniform line-space (TULS) design. The SVLS design is superior to the TULS, theoretically in resolution and image concentration, but also practically with not only fabrication ease. Four SVLS gratings with nominal groove densities of 6000, 4550, 3450, and 2616 gr./mm, and a 200 mm x 200 mm ruled area have been ruled using a numerically controlled ruling engine for use in ORFEUS.

Discovery of molecular hydrogen fluorescence in the diffuse interstellar medium

The first detection of molecular hydrogen fluorescence in the diffuse interstellar medium is reported. Using the Berkeley UVX Shuttle Spectrometer, H2 Lyman band fluorescence has been observed in four directions, each with high significance. Molecular hydrogen fluorescence is detected in all directions that have previously been found to contain significant CO emission. A simple equilibrium model has been developed that includes attenuation of the incident UV radiation field by H2 line and dust continuum absorption. Evidence is found that the gas in the CO emission portions of the clouds may be clumpy, with a filling factor less than 0.2 and an average density greater than 30/cu cm in most cases.

EUV efficiency of a 6000-grooves per mm diffraction grating

In order to explore whether grooves ruled mechanically at a density of 6000 per mm can perform well at EUV wavelengths, a sample grating is measured with this density in an EUV calibration facility. Measurements are presented of the planar uniform line-space diffraction grating's efficiency and large-angle scattering.

ORFEUS-SPAS - The Berkeley EUV spectrometer

The Berkeley EUV spectrometer of ORFEUS-SPAS, a joint project of NASA and the BMFT, incorporates a set of four novel spherically figured, varied line-space gratings used in a geometry that is similar to that of the classic Rowland mount to span an interval of 390 and 1200 A. Two spectral detector units containing curved microchannel plates and delay-line anodes encode the arriving photons in digital format for telemetry. An additional optic directs the image of the source in the entrance aperture onto a sealed FUV detector which is used to track the source as it drifts during an observation, enabling a postflight reconstruction of the spacecraft pointing vector. This in turn makes it possible to define with precision the wavelength of each recorded photon.

New measurements of the far ultraviolet scattering properties of interstellar dust

An analysis is presented for the spectra of the diffuse ultraviolet background taken during shuttle flight STS-61C (January 1986). Eight regions of the sky were observed for approximately 20 minutes each, using a spectrograph designed specifically to perform measurements of the UV background. The field of view was 3.8 deg x 8 min, with imaging along the slit to confine stellar contamination. The instrument featured a shutter mechanism to measure internal background during flight, a low-scatter holographically ruled diffraction grating, photon counting microchannel plate detectors, through baffling, and a crystal window to further attenuate stray light. The spectra covered the range 1400 to 1850 A and was binned in 50 A bands. The procedure for substracting the contribution of stars too faint to be detected as discrete sources during the observations (in general this represents a small fraction of the total intensity detected except at the longest wavelengths). A radiative transfer model used to interpret the data and set confidence intervals on the relevant parameters is described. It was found that the continuum component of the diffuse ultraviolet background arises primarily from two sources. One source is scattering of starlight by interstellar dust with an albedo of about 12 percent and a relatively isotropic phase function. A second source consists of about 150 photons/cm/sec/ster/A of extragalactic light which is attenuated by the dust in the galaxy. Although emission features possibly associated with molecular H2 are detected in one look direction, fluorescence of H2 is not a major contributor to the diffuse UV background, at least at galactic latitudes greater than -10 degrees.

ORFEUS focal plane instrumentation: The Berkeley spectrometer

A spectrograph for the ORFEUS mission that incorporates four varied line-space, spherically figured diffraction gratings was designed. The ORFEUS, a 1-m normal incidence telescope is equipped with 2 focal plane spectrographs. The Berkeley spectrograph was developed with an optimizing raytracing computer code. Each grating accepts the light from 20 percent of the aperture of the telescope primary mirror and has a unique set of characteristics to cover a sub-bandpass within the 390 to 1200 A spectral range. Two photon-counting detectors incorporating a time delay readout system are used to record the spectra from all four gratings simultaneously. The nominal design achieves a spectral resolution (FWHM) in excess of 5500 at all wavelengths within the bandpass. The resolution is limited primarily by the detector spatial resolution. The 1 sigma astigmatism of this design varies between 13 and 150 micrometer on the same focal surface. An independent, direct imaging system tracks the drift of the target within the spectrometer aperture and allows measurement of the misalignment between the telescope optical axis and that of the external star tracker. The resolution and astigmatism achievable with this design are superior to those of a standard Rowland spectrograph designed with the same constraints.

The Berkeley EUV/FUV Shuttle Telescope - Observations of dust reflection in the FUV

Observations by the Berkeley EUV/FUV Shuttle Telescope of the FUV reflection from dust clouds are reported. Spectra of the diffuse UV background from regions of low and high hydrogen column density have been taken. The intensity of the continuum correlates well with the column density of neutral hydrogen, and the slope of this correlation is interpreted with a simple model of optically thin scattering to obtain a measurement of a combination of the albedo and asymmetry parameter in the FUV.

A grazing incidence extreme ultraviolet spectrometer for use with a diverging beam

Attention is given to the 100-350 A performance of a grazing incidence spectrometer configuration that accepts a diverging beam for the conduct of moderate resolution spectroscopy. Assuming a focal ratio of 10 for the diverging beam, the first optic of the configuration is an off-axis ellipsoid that is used at grazing incidence to refocus the diverging beam and increase the focal ratio. A detailed study is made of the performance of a plane, straight-groove, variable-line-space grating; the aberrations are evaluated analytically and verified by geometrical ray tracing. System resolution is a function of telescope image quality. An optimum design is found by varying six parameters and maximizing the average resolution over the bandpass. The spectrometer can be located far from the optical axis, and fed by a small grazing incidence pick-off mirror.

A high resolution spectrometer for EUV/FUV wavelengths

The most efficient of the various configurations considered for a high-resolution spaceborne spectrometer for point-source astronomy in the 400-1200-A wavelength region which will fit within an envelope defined by the projected Spartan space platform is a multiple Rowland circle spectrograph, with each of four toroidal gratings respectively intercepting a fraction of the primary mirror beam. Each spectrometer can accept a rather slowly diverging beam, reducing grating aberrations, without further efficiency loss due to additional reflections or magnification. The line densities, detector size, pixel size, etc., of the detector for this instrument are dependent on the drift rate of the space platform; a design optimized for an uncorrected 4-arcsec drift is presented.

Calibration of a 1 meter diameter normal incidence extreme ultraviolet telescope/spectrometer

A 1-meter normal incidence telescope, with a normal incidence concave diffraction grating spectrometer at its focus, has been developed. The instrument's spectral coverage is 350 to 1150A with a spectral resolution of 5A and a peak effective area of 6 sq cm at 500A. The instrument was launched on an Aries sounding rocket on November 27, 1983 in an effort to determine the hydrogen and helium abundance in the local interstellar medium. A description of this instrument, with the primary emphasis on the methods used to calibrate it, is presented.
