Uncertainty Quantification of a Light Water Pulsed-Neutron Die-Away Experiment to Thermal Neutron Scattering Laws

Thermal neutron scattering laws are important nuclear data for many nuclear science and engineering applications. Validation helps to ensure that a thermal neutron scattering law has a high quality and often employs critical benchmarks as integral experiments. Recently, pulsed-neutron die-away benchmarks have been used as an experiment to validate thermal neutron scattering laws. Herein, we evidence how this alternative integral experiment has a high sensitivity to these nuclear data by performing an uncertainty quantification analysis. The analysis randomly sampled the nuclear model parameters associated with hydrogen bound in light water thermal neutron scattering law and sampled other nuclear data that influenced the experiment’s integral parameter (e.g., elastic scattering, absorption in hydrogen and oxygen) from their respective covariance matrices. The thermal neutron scattering law caused an uncertainty in the integral parameter that reached 2.67%, which exceeds by an order of magnitude the uncertainties induced in commonly used thermal solution critical benchmarks. The validation performed here, although limited due to a poor description of the historical experiment, indicated that the ENDF/B-VIII.0 thermal neutron scattering law well predicted the integral parameter. These results motivate further benchmark and validation efforts using pulsed-neutron die-away experiments.

Coupling of nTRACER to COBRA-TF for full core high-fidelity analysis of VVERs

The evolution of computing clusters allows the use of high-resolution multi-physics solvers for reactor analysis. Despite the continuous expansion of VVER technology, only one other high-fidelity sub-pin multi-physics core solver is currently developed for safety analysis. To that end the Laboratory of Reactor Physics and Thermal-Hydraulics (LRT) of Paul Scherrer Institut is developing such a tool with the coupling of the neutronic code nTRACER and the sub-channel code COBRA-TF. This work follows the initial steps of the coupling and focuses to the extension of the core solver to full core VVER geometries. The X2 VVER-1000 benchmark is modeled with the novel core solver. The results are compared to the ones of a standalone nTRACER calculation where the feedbacks are provided by a simplified 1D thermal-hydraulic solver. Despite relatively good agreement in power distribution, the limitations of the simplified solver become apparent especially when comparing global temperature profiles. (authors)

Development and application of marginal likelihood optimization for integral parameter adjustment

When adjusting nuclear data with integral experiments, care must be taken that spurious adjustments are not made by assimilating poorly characterized integral parameters. If there are unaccounted for biases or poorly estimated uncertainties in the calculated and experimental values for an integral parameter, the Bayesian data assimilation may adjust the nuclear data in a manner that does not reflect the physics of the integral parameter. To identify and lessen the impact of these inconsistent integral parameters, in this study we present a Marginal Likelihood Optimization algorithm. In a data-driven way, the marginalized likelihood is used to modulate hyperparameter terms that decrease the influence of inconsistent integral parameters on the adjustment. The advantage of this approach over other methods in the literature is that it incorporates correlation information and does not remove an integral parameter from the adjustment. Herein, we present and motivate the algorithm, and apply it to an integral data assimilation case study.
