Integrated rocksalt–polyanion cathodes with excess lithium and stabilized cycling

Co- and Ni-free disordered rocksalt cathodes utilize oxygen redox to increase the energy density of lithium-ion batteries, but it is challenging to achieve good cycle life at high voltages >4.5 V (versus Li/Li + ). Here, in this study, we report a family of Li-excess Mn-rich cathodes that integrates rocksalt- and polyanion-type structures. Following design rules for cation filling and ordering, we demonstrate the bulk incorporation of polyanion groups into the rocksalt lattice. This integration bridges the two primary families of lithium-ion battery cathodes—layered/spinel and phosphate oxides—dramatically enhancing the cycling stability of disordered rocksalt cathodes with 4.8 V upper cut-off voltage. The cathode exhibits high gravimetric energy densities above 1,100 Wh kg -1 and >70% retention over 100 cycles. This study opens up a broad compositional space for developing battery cathodes using earth-abundant elements such as Mn and Fe.

Trailblazing Kr/Xe Separation: The Birth of the First Kr-Selective Material

Efficient separation of Kr from Kr/Xe mixtures is pivotal in nuclear waste management and dark matter research. Thus far, scientists have encountered a formidable challenge: the absence of a material with the ability to selectively adsorb Kr over Xe at room temperature. This study presents a groundbreaking transformation of the renowned metal–organic framework (MOF) CuBTC, previously acknowledged for its Xe adsorption affinity, into an unparalleled Kr-selective adsorbent. This achievement stems from an innovative densification approach involving systematic compression of the MOF, where the crystal size, interparticle interaction, defects, and evacuation conditions are synergistically modulated. The resultant densified CuBTC phase exhibits exceptional mechanical resilience, radiation tolerance, and notably an unprecedented selectivity for Kr over Xe at room temperature. Simulation and experimental kinetic diffusion studies confirm reduced gas diffusion in the densified MOF, attributed to its small pore window and minimal interparticle voids. The lighter Kr element demonstrates facile surface passage and higher diffusivity within the material, while the heavier Xe encounters increased difficulty entering the material and lower diffusivity. This Kr-selective MOF not only represents a significant breakthrough in Kr separation but also demonstrates remarkable processability and scalability to kilogram levels. Furthermore, the findings presented herein underscore the transformative potential of engineered MOFs in addressing complex challenges, heralding a new era of Kr separation technologies.

Reactive boride infusion stabilizes Ni-rich cathodes for lithium-ion batteries

Engineered polycrystalline electrodes are critical to the cycling stability and safety of lithium-ion batteries, yet it is challenging to construct high-quality coatings at both the primary- and secondary-particle levels. Here, we present a room-temperature synthesis route to achieve full surface coverage of secondary particles and facile infusion into grain boundaries, thus offering a complete “coating-plus-infusion” strategy. Cobalt boride metallic glass is successfully applied to Ni-rich layered cathode LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 . Here, it dramatically improves the rate capability and cycling stability, including under high-discharge-rate and elevated-temperature conditions and in pouch full cells. The superior performance originates from simultaneous suppression of microstructural degradation of intergranular cracking and side reactions with electrolyte. Atomistic simulations identified the critical role of strong selective interfacial bonding, which offers not only a large chemical driving force to ensure uniform reactive wetting and facile infusion but also lowered the surface/interface oxygen activity, contributing to the exceptional mechanical and electrochemical stabilities of the infused electrode.

Chemical and structural origin of hole states in yttria-stabilized zirconia

Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has important electrochemical applications as a fast oxygen ion conductor and is the state-of-the-art electrolyte material for solid oxide fuel/electrolyzer cells. While much attention has been paid to the fast oxygen ion conduction, the electronic conductivity and especially hole carriers are not well understood, yet essential for the electrochemical stability, conduction kinetics and microstructural evolution in YSZ. The present work uses first-principles calculations to illustrate the chemical nature and local structural features of hole states in oxidized YSZ. Three types of hole states have been identified, including delocalized hole states on normal oxygen ions, localized hole states on special oxygen ions with extreme local structures, and peroxide-like groups. In conclusion, the implications on various experimental observations are discussed.

Lithium Manganese Spinel Cathodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Spinel LiMn 2 O 4 , whose electrochemical activity was first reported by Professor John B. Goodenough’s group at Oxford in 1983, is an important cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, which attracts continuous academic and industrial interests. It is cheap and environmentally friendly, and has excellent rate performance with 3-dimensional (3D) Li + diffusion channels. However, it suffers from severe degradations, especially under extreme voltages and during high-temperature operations. In this review, the current understanding and future trends of the spinel cathode and its derivatives with cubic lattice symmetry (LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 that shows high-voltage stability, and Li-rich spinels that show reversible hybrid anion- and cation-redox activities) shall be discussed. Special attention is given to the degradation mechanisms, further development of spinel cathodes, and concepts of utilizing the cubic spinel structure to stabilize high-capacity layered cathodes and as robust framework for high-rate electrodes. Lastly, “Good spinel” surface phases like LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 are distinguished from “bad spinel” surface phases like Mn 3 O 4 .
