2,3-Diphenylthieno[3,4-b]pyrazines as Hole-Transporting Materials for Stable, High-Performance Perovskite Solar Cells

High-performance and durable perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have advanced rapidly, enabled in part by the development of superior interfacial hole-transporting layers (HTLs). Here, in this study, a new series of 2,3-diphenylthieno[3,4-b]pyrazine (DPTP)-based small molecules containing bis- and tetrakis-triphenyl amino donors (1–3) was synthesized from simple, low-cost, and readily available starting materials. The matched energy levels, ideal surface topographies, high hole mobilities of 8.57 × 10 –4 cm 2 V –1 S –1 , and stable chemical structures of DPTP-4D (3) make it an effective hole-transporting material, delivering a PCE of 20.18% with high environmental, thermal, and light-soaking stability when compared to the reference HTL materials, doped Spiro-OMeTAD and PTAA in PSC n-i-p planar devices. Overall, these DPTP-based molecules are promising HTM candidates for the fabrication of stable PSCs.

Highly stretchable organic electrochemical transistors with strain-resistant performance

Realizing fully stretchable electronic materials is central to advancing new types of mechanically agile and skin-integrable optoelectronic device technologies. Here we demonstrate a materials design concept combining an organic semiconductor film with a honeycomb porous structure with biaxially prestretched platform that enables high-performance organic electrochemical transistors with a charge transport stability over 30-140% tensional strain, limited only by metal contact fatigue. In this work, the prestretched honeycomb semiconductor channel of donor-acceptor polymer poly(2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-diketo-pyrrolopyrrole-alt-2,5-bis(3-triethyleneglycoloxy-thiophen-2-yl) exhibits high ion uptake and completely stable electrochemical and mechanical properties over 1,500 redox cycles with 10(4) stretching cycles under 30% strain. Invariant electrocardiogram recording cycles and synapse responses under varying strains, along with mechanical finite element analysis, underscore that the present stretchable organic electrochemical transistor design strategy is suitable for diverse applications requiring stable signal output under deformation with low power dissipation and mechanical robustness. Highly stretchable organic electrochemical transistors with stable charge transport under severe tensional strains are demonstrated using a honeycomb semiconducting polymer morphology, thereby enabling controllable signal output for diverse stretchable bioelectronic applications.

A continuum model for heat and mass transfer in moving-bed reactors for thermochemical energy storage

In this work, a continuum heat and mass transfer model coupling transport phenomena and high-temperature thermochemical reactions is developed for stationary packed-bed and counter-flow moving-bed reactors. After presenting the general modeling framework, we focus on the 2D axisymmetric version of the model for which validation is conducted with experimental results for a packed-bed reactor in the literature for manganese-iron oxide reduction/oxidation and an in-house counter-flow moving-bed reactor for magnesium-manganese oxide reduction up to 1450 °C. Transient simulation results including the local distributions of gas/solid temperatures, oxygen concentration and the extent of reaction, as well as the various energy flow components and energy conversion efficiencies are reported. The results based on the 2D axisymmetric model are also compared with those obtained from a previous 1D model. The comparison shows that capturing the radial variation is critical in reactor modeling and the 2D results demonstrate improved agreement with experiments. Specifically, large temperature variations along the radial direction are observed especially in the reaction zone; this non-uniform radial temperature distribution has a significant effect on the chemical reaction extent due to its strong dependence on temperature; and the overall oxygen concentration at the reactor exit and the predicted system efficiency are slightly lower in the 2D model compared to the 1D model. Finally, the present heat and mass transfer model can provide valuable insights into reactor design, scale-up, and operating conditions selection to maximize system energy storage efficiency.

Mesocrystalline Ordering and Phase Transformation of Iron Oxide Biominerals in the Ultrahard Teeth of Cryptochiton stelleri

Biological organisms naturally synthesize complex, hierarchical, multifunctional materials through mineralization processes at ambient conditions and under physiological pH. One such example is the ultrahard and wear-resistant radular teeth found in mollusks, which are used to scape against the rock to feed on algae. Herein, the biologically controlled structural development of the hard, outer magnetite-containing shell of the chitin teeth is revealed. Specifically, the formation of a series of mesocrystalline iron oxide phases, templated by chitin-binding proteins, is identified. The initial domains, consisting of ferrihydrite mesocrystals with a spherulite-like morphology, undergo a solid-state phase transformation to form magnetite while maintaining mesocrystallinity, likely via a shear-induced solid-state reaction, without any noticeable architectural changes. Subsequent growth via Ostwald ripening leads to nearly single-crystalline rod-like elements. In addition, an interpenetrating organic matrix is identified that, at early stages of tooth development, potentially contains iron-binding proteins that guide the self-assembly of the mesocrystalline mineral and influence the preferred orientation of the later-formed magnetite nanorods, which ultimately determines the mechanical behavior of the mature chiton teeth.

Apparatus and method for providing workload distribution of threads among multiple compute units

In some examples, thermal aware optimization logic determines a characteristic (e.g., a workload or type) of a wavefront (e.g., multiple threads). For example, the characteristic indicates whether the wavefront is compute intensive, memory intensive, mixed, and/or another type of wavefront. The thermal aware optimization logic determines temperature information for one or more compute units (CUs) in one or more processing cores. The temperature information includes predictive thermal information indicating expected temperatures corresponding to the one or more CUs and historical thermal information indicating current or past thermal temperatures of at least a portion of a graphics processing unit (GPU). The logic selects the one or more compute units to process the plurality of threads based on the determined characteristic and the temperature information. The logic provides instructions to the selected subset of the plurality of CUs to execute the wavefront.

Thermochemical reduction modeling in a high-temperature moving-bed reactor for energy storage: 1D model

The design of robust and efficient high-temperature thermochemical reactors and determination of operating conditions are critical steps toward enabling high-efficiency long-duration solar energy storage. This work presents a computational model for the thermal reduction of a metal oxide material (Mg-Mn-O) up to 1450 °C and the coupled complex transport phenomena in a novel tubular thermal reactor design that features the capability for a high extent-of-reduction (high energy storage density) and inherent heat recuperation. A one-dimensional model coupling counter-current gas–solid flow, two-phase heat transfer, thermochemical redox reactions, and species transport in a moving-bed reactor is developed. Simplified versions of the model are validated with published results in the literature for packed beds with both inert and reactive particles; the fully coupled model is also validated with experimental measurements of a moving-bed reactor in terms of local temperatures and oxygen release at the exit. Detailed comparisons on the effects of different boundary conditions in the reaction zone (prescribed wall temperature vs. heat flux conditions) and formulations based on a simple uniform flow assumption vs. plug flow using Ergun equation for gas flow are investigated. The results are compared with experimental measurements, and for all cases, the energy flow components in the reactor system and the thermal to chemical conversion efficiency and overall system efficiency are computed. Finally, the predicted high thermal-to-chemical efficiency ~95% and system efficiency ~30% agree with experimental measurements.

Disease modeling for Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB using patient derived induced pluripotent stem cells

Highlights: • Establishment of a patient-specific neuronal model for Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB using iPSCs. • Lysosomes enlarged and secondary lipid accumulated in Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB iPSC-derived neuronal cells. • Recombinant NAGLU, δ-tocopherol, and HPBCD reduced the disease phenotypes in MPS IIIB iPSC-derived neuronal cells. Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB (MPS IIIB) is a lysosomal disease caused by mutations in the NAGLU gene encoding α-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAGLU) which degrades heparan sulfate in lysosomes. Deficiency in NAGLU results in lysosomal accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and neurological symptoms. Currently, there is no effective treatment or cure for this disease. In this study, induced pluripotent stem cell lines were established from two MPS IIIB patient fibroblast lines and differentiated into neural stem cells and neurons. MPS IIIB neural stem cells exhibited NAGLU deficiency accompanied with GAG accumulation, as well as lysosomal enlargement and secondary lipid accumulation. Treatments with recombinant NAGLU, δ-tocopherol, and 2-hydroxypropyl-b-cyclodextrin significantly reduced the disease phenotypes in these cells. These results indicate the MPS IIIB neural stem cells and neurons have the disease relevant phenotype and can be used as a cell-based disease model system for evaluation of drug efficacy and compound screening for drug development.

Sorafenib derivatives-functionalized gold nanoparticles confer protection against tumor angiogenesis and proliferation via suppression of EGFR and VEGFR-2

Sorafenib is a multi-kinase inhibitor that has been highlighted as a tumor suppressor due to its anti-proliferative and anti-angiogenic properties, whereas the clinical application of Sorafenib is restricted by the side effects it may cause. The past decade has witnessed the development of a series of sorafenib derivatives to improve the clinical performance of sorafenib. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been widely utilized in drug delivery systems due to their unique properties, including biocompatible nature, simple preparation, and easy surface modification. Herein, this study is aimed to investigate the anti-tumor effects of new sorafenib derivatives-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs-New Sor) in tumor formation and metastasis as well as the underlying mechanisms. Initially, new sorafenib derivatives were constructed and combined with AuNPs to form AuNPs-New Sor, and the properties of synthesized AuNPs-New Sor were identified in a mouse model of tumorigenesis. The effect of AuNPs-New Sor on tumor vascular normalization was investigated by assessing vascular permeability and perfusion rate. Next, we evaluated the effect of AuNPs-New Sor on migration and viability of tumor cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) as well as on HUVEC angiogenesis in vitro. A melanoma mouse model was further established for in vivo substantiation of the anti-tumor effect of AuNPs-New Sor. According to the results, AuNPs could deliver new sorafenib derivatives into tumor tissues and downregulate the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2), thereby suppressing tumor migration, EMT, and angiogenesis in vitro. In addition, AuNPs-New Sor displayed competitive anti-tumor activities in vivo. Taken together, AuNPs-New Sor may attenuate tumor development and angiogenesis through downregulation of EGFR and VEGFR-2.
