Artificial Transmembrane Channel Constructed from Shape-Persistent Covalent Organic Molecular Cages Capable of Ion and Small Molecule Transport

Shape-persistent arylene ethynylene molecular cages have been investigated as transmembrane channels for ions and small molecules. The molecular cages were obtained starting from tetrayne monomers through alkyne metathesis cyclooligomerization. We found these porphyrin-based rigid molecular cages can insert into the lipid bilayer and efficiently transport ions and small molecules (e.g., calcein). Our study reveals longer hydrophobic alkyl chains on the cage molecule promote the channeling efficiency, while shorter and/or more polar side chains impair such activity. Kinetic analysis shows linear correlation between the rate of proton transport and the concentration of the cage, suggesting the active species is likely a monomeric cage. We found that C70-encapsulated cages are nearly inactive for transmembrane ion transportation, indicating that ions are likely transported through the internal cavity of the cage. Discrete shape-persistent organic cages represent highly stable synthetic ion channels or pores, which could have interesting applications in biomimetic signaling and drug delivery.

3D–Integrated, Multi–Functional Carbon Fibers for Stable, High–Areal–Capacity Batteries

Increasing lithium-ion batteries' (LIBs) electrode areal capacity can boost energy density and lower manufacturing costs, but faces challenges in manufacturing, rate performance, and cycling stability. A conductive framework made of commercial micro-sized carbon fibers (Cfs) is presented that serves as a host for both the LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC 532) cathode and Cfs anode. The Cf framework has multiple functions that offer high electronic conductivity (270 mS cm –1 ), low tortuosity (1.7), low Li + diffusion resistance (22 Ω), and high thermal conductivity (200 W mK –1 ). Additionally, the Cf-integrated electrodes can have an extremely high mass loading of NMC 532 (70 mg cm –2 ) with a theoretical capacity of 14 mAh cm –2 . Thus, the practical full cells assembled with the Cfs-enabled electrodes exhibit an initial areal capacity of 4.1 mAh cm –2 and capacity retention of 90.4% at 500 cycles at a cycling rate of C/3, 1.5 mA cm –2 . Data collected from the operando isothermal microcalorimetry suggest that full cells utilizing the Cf anode experience less heat release from side reactions compared to cells utilizing a conventional graphite anode. Finally, this present approach is scalable and cost-effective and can fabricate practical LIBs that boast high areal capacity, rate performance, and a lengthy cycling lifetime.

Spiroborate-Linked Ionic Covalent Adaptable Networks with Rapid Reprocessability and Closed-Loop Recyclability

Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) represent a novel class of polymeric materials crosslinked by dynamic covalent bonds. Since their first discovery, CANs have attracted great attention due to their high mechanical strength and stability like conventional thermosets under service conditions and easy reprocessability like thermoplastics under certain external stimuli. Here, we report the first example of ionic covalent adaptable networks (ICANs), a type of crosslinked ionomers, consisting of negatively charged backbone structures. More specifically, two ICANs with different backbone compositions were prepared through spiroborate chemistry. Given the dynamic nature of the spiroborate linkages, the resulting ionomer thermosets display rapid reprocessability and closed-loop recyclability under mild conditions. The materials mechanically broken into smaller pieces can be reprocessed into coherent solids at 120 °C within only 1 min with nearly 100% recovery of the mechanical properties. Upon treating the ICANs with dilute hydrochloric acid at room temperature, the valuable monomers can be easily chemically recycled in almost quantitative yield. Furthermore, this work demonstrates the great potential of spiroborate bonds as a novel dynamic ionic linkage for development of new reprocessable and recyclable ionomer thermosets.

Highly C2/C1-Selective Covalent Organic Frameworks Substituted with Azo Groups

A series of covalent organic frameworks substituted with azo groups (AzoCOFs) have been synthesized via imine condensation. The obtained frameworks show crystallinity and high stability. More importantly, the AzoCOFs exhibit exceptionally high ideal adsorption solution theory (IAST) selectivity in adsorption of C 2 H 2 (35–2891) over CH 4 at 273 K and 1 bar, owing to the favorable interactions between azo groups and acetylene molecules. The dependence of the gas adsorption property on pore size and polarity of the frameworks was also studied. Here, the triethylene glycol substituted Tg-AzoCOF shows the highest C 2 H 2 /CH 4 selectivity (IAST selectivity of 2891), which represents the highest reported for all porous materials. The AzoCOFs also exhibit high IAST adsorption selectivity of C 2 H 4 /CH 4 (11–20), C 2 H 6 /CH 4 (15–22), and CO 2 /CH 4 (12–37), which is comparable with most porous materials, thus showing their great potential in gas separation applications.

Selective Ligand Modification of Cobalt Porphyrins for Carbon Dioxide Electrolysis: Generation of a Renewable H2/CO Feedstock for Downstream Catalytic Hydrogenation

Catalytic hydrogenation is an attractive approach to produce green fuels and chemicals. The building blocks for these processes may be effectively produced from renewable power via direct electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide in an aqueous media. For the first time, the impact of increasing the local proton concentration of cobalt porphyrin was examined by synthesizing new cobalt porphyrins 2, Co(o-OCH3)TPP and cobalt porphyrin 3, Co(o-OH)TPP. Cobalt porphyrins coated on carbon paper converted carbon dioxide and water into a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in an aqueous electrolyte at near neutral pH. Increasing the local proton availability of the commercial cobalt porphyrin 1, accelerates hydrogen generation under heterogeneous conditions across the range of potentials tested (-0.85 to -1.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl) and demonstrates high Faradaic efficiencies (ca. 90%) at low over-potentials (ca. 540 mV). The culmination of this work can help identify key parameters that facilitate generation of sustainable reagents for catalytic hydrogenation under practical and scalable conditions.
