Benchmarking CO₂ storage simulations: Results from the 11 th Society of Petroleum Engineers Comparative Solution Project

The 11 th Society of Petroleum Engineers Comparative Solution Project (shortened SPE11 herein) benchmarked simulation tools for geological carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) storage. A total of 45 groups from leading research institutions and industry across the globe signed up to participate, with 18 ultimately contributing valid results that were included in the comparative study reported here. This paper summarizes the SPE11 results. A comprehensive introduction and qualitative discussion of the submitted data are provided, together with an overview of online resources for accessing the full depth of data. A global metric for analyzing the relative distance between submissions is proposed and used to conduct a quantitative analysis of the submissions. This analysis attempts to statistically resolve the key aspects influencing the variability between submissions. The study shows that the major qualitative variation between the submitted results is related to thermal effects, dissolution-driven convective mixing, and resolution of facies discontinuities. Moreover, a strong dependence on grid resolution is observed across all three versions of the SPE11. However, our quantitative analysis suggests that the observed variations are predominantly influenced by factors not documented in the technical responses provided by the participants. We therefore identify that unreported variations due to human choices within the process of setting up, conducting, and reporting on the simulations underlying each SPE11 submission are at least as impactful as the computational choices reported.

Stabilization of three-dimensional charge order through interplanar orbital hybridization in Pr x Y 1–x Ba 2 Cu 3 O 6+δ

The shape of 3d-orbitals often governs the electronic and magnetic properties of correlated transition metal oxides. In the superconducting cuprates, the planar confinement of the d x 2 –y 2 orbital dictates the two-dimensional nature of the unconventional superconductivity and a competing charge order. Achieving orbital-specific control of the electronic structure to allow coupling pathways across adjacent planes would enable direct assessment of the role of dimensionality in the intertwined orders. Using Cu L 3 and Pr M 5 resonant x-ray scattering and first-principles calculations, we report a highly correlated three-dimensional charge order in Pr-substituted YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 , where the Pr f-electrons create a direct orbital bridge between CuO 2 planes. With this we demonstrate that interplanar orbital engineering can be used to surgically control electronic phases in correlated oxides and other layered materials.

Generic character of charge and spin density waves in superconducting cuprates

Charge density waves (CDWs) have been observed in nearly all families of copper-oxide superconductors. But the behavior of these phases across different families has been perplexing. In La-based cuprates, the CDW wavevector is an increasing function of doping, exhibiting the so-called Yamada behavior, while in Y- and Bi-based materials the behavior is the opposite. Here, we report a combined resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSXS) and neutron scattering study of charge and spin density waves in isotopically enriched La 1.8–x Eu 0.2 Sr x CuO 4 over a range of doping 0.07 ≤ x ≤ 0.20. In this work, we find that the CDW amplitude is temperature independent and develops well above experimentally accessible temperatures. Further, the CDW wavevector shows a nonmonotonic temperature dependence, exhibiting Yamada behavior at low temperature with a sudden change occurring near the spin ordering temperature. We describe these observations using a Landau–Ginzburg theory for an incommensurate CDW in a metallic system with a finite charge compressibility and spin-CDW coupling. Extrapolating to high temperature, where the CDW amplitude is small and spin order is absent, our analysis predicts a decreasing wavevector with doping, similar to Y and Bi cuprates. Our study suggests that CDW order in all families of cuprates forms by a common mechanism.

Search for Q ~0 Order near a Forbidden Bragg Position in Bi 2.1 Sr 1.9 CaCu 2 O 8+x with Resonant Soft X-ray Scattering

Identifying what broken symmetries are present in the cuprates has become a major area of research. Many authors have reported evidence for so-called “Q ~ 0” order that involves broken inversion, mirror, chiral, or time-reversal symmetry that is uniform in space. Not all these observations are well understood and new experimental probes are needed. Here we use resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) to search for Q ~ 0 order in Bi 2.1 Sr 1.9 CaCu 2 O 8+x (Bi-2212) by measuring the region of a forbidden Bragg peak, (0,0,3), which is normally extinguished by symmetry but may become allowed on resonance if valence band order is present. Using circularly polarized light, we found that this reflection becomes allowed on the CuL 3 resonance for temperatures T c < T < T*, though remains absent in linear polarization and at other temperatures. This observation suggests the existence of spatially uniform valence band order near the pseudogap temperature. In addition, we observed periodic oscillations in the specular reflectivity from the sample surface that resemble thin film interference fringes, though no known film is present. These fringes are highly resonant, appear in all polarizations, and exhibit a period that depends on the location where the beam strikes the sample surface. We speculate that these fringes arise from interaction between some intrinsic valence band instability and extrinsic structural surface morphologies of the material. Our study supports the existence of some kind of Q ~ 0 broken symmetry state in Bi-2212 at intermediate temperatures. Further studies using a microfocused beam, which could disentangle microscopic effects from macroscopic heterogeneities, are needed to ascertain the universality of the effect.

Selective dopant segregation modulates mesoscale reaction kinetics in layered transition metal oxide

Incorporation of foreign elements into the cathode material is broadly adopted by both academia and industry to improve the battery performance. The lack of an in-depth understanding for the underlying mechanism, however, makes it a largely try-and-error process with unsatisfactory efficiency and effectiveness. This is particularly true for the electrochemical reaction kinetics that is heterogeneous over a broad range of length scales and is determined collectively by the cathode’s electronic structure, lattice configuration, and micro-morphology. In this work, we unveiled a facet-dependent dopant segregation effect in Zr-modified single-crystal LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 cathode. By forming kinetically favored corners on the cathode particles, the presence of a trace amount of Zr critically modulates the mesoscale reaction kinetics. Our findings suggest that a delicately controlled dopant distribution is a viable strategy for designing the next-generation battery cathode with superior structural and chemical robustness.

Transient Coupled Chemical-Thermal-Fluid Field Simulation for Sealed Aluminum-clad Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Canister

As the first step toward developing three-dimensional (3D) multi-physics computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for unsealed and vented canister storage system, a 3D CFD model coupled with bulk gas radiolysis reactions was developed first for sealed DOE standard canisters filled with inert gas and trace amount of air and water. The workflow for constructing canister-scale 3D CFD models and coupling with gas phase radiolysis reactions were established, which can be readily extended to unsealed, vented canister storage system. This interim milestone report documents the theory of the model, workflow to establish radiolysis reaction network, and initial simulations of the evolutions of thermal fields and hydrogen gas concentrations within sealed DOE standard canisters over long period of time. In addition, a mesh refinement test was done to show that increasing the models mesh refinement had negligible impact upon the temperature profiles.

Detection of the Chiral Spin Structure in Ferromagnetic SrRuO 3 Thin Film

SrRuO3 (SRO) thin films and their heterostructure have brought much attention because of the recently demonstrated fascinating properties, such as topological Hall effect and skyrmions. Critical to the understanding of those SRO properties is the study of the spin configuration. Here, we conduct resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) at the oxygen K-edge to investigate the spin configuration of a 4 unit-cell SRO film that was grown epitaxially on a single crystal SrTiO 3 . The RSXS signal under a magnetic field (~0.4 Tesla) clearly shows a magnetic dichroism pattern around the specular reflection. Model calculations on the RSXS signal demonstrate that the magnetic dichroism pattern originates from a Néel-type chiral spin structure in this SRO thin film. We believe that the observed spin structure of the SRO system is a critical piece of information for understanding its intriguing magnetic and transport properties.

Customizable Scale-Out Key-Value Stores

Enterprise KV stores are often not well suited for HPC applications, and thus cumbersome end-to-end KV design customization is required to meet the needs of modern HPC applications. To this end, in this article we present bespoKV, an adaptive, extensible, and scale-out KV store framework. bespoKV decouples the KV store design into the control plane for distributed management and the data plane for local data store. For the control plane, bespoKVprovides pre-built modules, called controlets, supporting common distributed functionalities (e.g., replication, consistency, and topology) and their various combinations. This decoupling allows bespoKV to take a user-provided single-server KV store, called a datalet, and transparently enables a scalable and fault-tolerant distributed KV store service. The resulting distributed stores are also adaptive to consistency or topology requirement changes and can be easily extended for new types of services. Such specializations enable innovative uses of KV stores in HPC applications, especially for emerging applications that utilize KV-friendly workloads. We evaluate bespoKV in a local testbed as well as in a public cloud settings. Experiments show that bespoKV-enabled distributed KV stores scale horizontally to a large number of nodes, and performs comparably and sometimes 1.2× to 2.6× better than the state-of-the-art systems.

Operando Revealing Dynamic Reconstruction of NiCo Carbonate Hydroxide for High-Rate Energy Storage

Transition metal carbonate hydroxide (CH) has been widely explored as a promising battery-type electrode for high-rate energy storage. However, its genuine active sites under realistic operating conditions remains elusive. In this work, by virtue of the cutting-edge operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we unfold the dynamic evolution of the local electronic and geometric structures for the CH electrode upon cycling. Our results reveal that the irreversible redox of Co cations at the early stage of cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycling induces a phase transition in the NiCo CH nanowires forming oxygen vacancies-enriched NiCo layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets with superior high-rate energy storage ability. Theoretical modeling demonstrates that the unsaturated 5-coordinated Co sites exhibit optimal redox reaction energy barrier and immensely promote the performance. These findings not only elucidate the electrochemical susceptibility of the Co-based carbonate hydroxide under operando conditions, but also highlight an electrochemical coordination-engineering strategy for the rational design of high-performance electrode.

Macro- and micro-compression testing of shales

Here, macro- and micro-geomechanical properties of shales were investigated at millimeter- and micrometer-scale using an example of the Woodford Shale. Geomechanical properties, such as uniaxial (unconfined) compressive strength and Young's modulus, were quantified at the millimeter-scale and compared with results from micro-compression testing experiments of FIB-SEM-nanofabricated micro-pillars. Size-scale and compositional/structural heterogeneity effect on elasto-plastic deformation and failure behavior of shales were investigated. Also, relationship between elemental/mineral composition and unconfined compressive strength and Young's modulus, at a micrometer-scale, was discussed. It was shown that geomechanical properties of shales are scale-dependent and are strongly affected by compositional/structural anisotropy. In particular, micro-compression testing experiments showed non-uniformly distributed compressive strength and Young's modulus within the investigated Woodford Shale rock samples. It was demonstrated, that geomechanical properties of shales, investigated at the micrometer-scale, tend to be affected by different minerals and/or pores, while the same properties, investigated at the millimeter-scale, are governed by different micro-facies (and/or micro-fractures) present within the rock. This shows that geomechanical properties of shales can be dramatically different depending on the scale of investigation and compositional/structural heterogeneity of these rocks, and therefore are not easily transferable across the scales.
