Active lithium chloride cell for spacecraft power

An active thionyl chloride high rate battery is under development for spacecraft operations. It is a 540kC (150 Ah) battery capable of pulses up to 75A. This paper describes the design and initial test data on a 'state-of-the-art' cell that has been selected to be the baseline for the prototype cell for that battery. Initial data indicate that the specification can be met with fresh cells. Data for stored cells and additional environmental test data are in the process of being developed.

Related Studies in Long Term Lithium Battery Stability

The continuing growth of the use of lithium electrochemical systems in a wide variety of both military and industrial applications is primarily a result of the significant benefits associated with the technology such as high energy density, wide temperature operation and long term stability. The stability or long term storage capability of a battery is a function of several factors, each important to the overall storage life and, therefore, each potentially a problem area if not addressed during the design, development and evaluation phases of the product cycle. Design (e.g., reserve vs active), inherent material thermal stability, material compatibility and self-discharge characteristics are examples of factors key to the storability of a power source.

High energy density primary batteries

By the use of fractional factorials, paths of steepest ascent and direct comparison experimentation, performance characteristics of the CuF2/LiAsF6-MF/Li electrochemical system were optimized under conditions of temperature environment, discharge rate, active stand, and use of anhydrous cathodes. Two hundred ampere-hours/lb of CuF2 and 600 watt-hours/lb of CuF2 were achieved in anhydrous cells at plus 40 C and at a discharge rate of 10 ma sq cm. Electrical performance is primarily altered by temperature and discharge rate; however, other factors such as cathode water content, cathode conductor content, separator thickness, and the use of SO2 gas also have significant effects.
