Designing A Mode Converter For Use With A Gyrotron
Report describes process of designing corrugated, circular-cross-section length of waveguide converting input electromagnetic radiation at frequency of 34.5 GHz in TM(11) mode to output radiation in HE(11) mode. TM(11)-mode input radiation supplied by gyrotron generating continuous-wave power of 200 kW at 34.5 GHz in TE(01) mode followed by TE(01)-to-TM(11) mode converter. Together, gyrotron and mode converters constitute prototype high-power transmitter for long-distance free-space communication.
Broadband Venetian-Blind Polarizer With Dual Vanes
Improved venetian-blind polarizer features optimized tandem, two-layer vane configuration reducing undesired reflections and deformation of radiation pattern below those of prior single-layer vane configuration. Consists of number of thin, parallel metal strips placed in path of propagating radio-frequency beam. Offers simple way to convert polarization from linear to circular or from circular to linear. Particularly useful for beam-wave-guide applications.
Computing Scattering Characteristics Of Waveguide Junctions
Rectangular WaveGuide Junction SCATtering RWGSCAT computer program solves scattering properties of waveguide device. Modeled as assembly of rectangular waveguides of different cross sections. RWGSCAT written in FORTRAN 77.
Broadband Venetian Blind polarizer with dual vanes
During development of a Venetian Blind polarizer, high reflections and substantial pattern deformation were noted. Analysis showed that when the polarizer was illuminated slightly off axis, a degenerate mode was excited. This mode is resonant at the design center frequency, and was the cause of the problems. A design developed using dual vanes has been shown to be free of the problem. It also has greater bandwidth.
Scattering-Matrix Program For Circular Waveguide Components
Scattering Matrix Program for Circular Waveguide Junctions, CWGSCAT, computes scattering matrices of series of circular waveguide sections. Sections must have same axis, but radius and length of each section completely arbitrary. Step discontinuities, corrugated sections, and horns analyzed. Written in FORTRAN.
Megawatt Square Microwave Feed Horn
Prototype multiflare square horn antenna designed to combine phased 8.51-GHz outputs of four 250-kW amplifiers into single 1-MW continuous-wave beam. Main lobe and side lobes reasonably below main lobe obtained by choosing tapers of multiflare horn to couple power from TE(Sub10) mode into three other modes. Intended to illuminate subreflector of 70-m-diameter radar antenna. Nearly duplicates radiation pattern of corrugated round feed horn.
Directional Couplers For Detecting Circular Waveguide Modes
Samples of TE11 and TE12 modes coupled selectively out of circular waveguide. Report presents additional details of theory, construction, and measured operating characteristics of directional couplers described in "Microwave Transmitter With Multimode Output Section" (NPO-16826). Couplers consist of tapered rectangular-cross-section waveguides fastened lengthwise to outside of circular waveguide, with uniformly-lengthwise-spaced round coupling holes between each rectangular waveguide and circular waveguide.
Computing Scattering Matrices For Circular Waveguides
Scattering Matrix Program for Circular Waveguide Junctions computes scattering matrix for series of circular waveguide sections. Sections must have same axis, but radius and length of each section completely arbitrary. Devices analyzed include simple waveguide step discontinuity like that used in a dual-mode horn, stepped matching section, or corrugated waveguide section with constant or varying slot depth. Certain types of corrugated horns also analyzed with program. Mathematical model used in program accurately predicts reflection and transmission characteristics of such devices, taking into account excitation of modes of higher order as well as multiple reflections and energy stored at each discontinuity. Written in FORTRAN 77.
Temperature measurements of a high-power microwave feedhorn window
Temperature measurements of a high-power microwave feedhorn window, obtained using an imaging IR radiometer during transmitter operation at 365 kW CW and 8.5 GHz, are discussed. The window under investigation was constructed of HTP-6, a high-thermal-performance material developed to shield the Space Shuttle Orbiter from the heat of reentry. The measurement technique is described, and experimental results are presented. The window performed adequately at 365 kW CW with a center temperature of 475 C. The tests verify that HTP-6 can be used as a window material or a support structure in high-power waveguides at power densities of 1.47 kW/sq cm for extended periods of time, with no change in its mechanical characteristics.
Design of a 1-MW CW 8.5 GHz transmitter for planetary RADAR
A proposed conceptual design for increasing the output power of an existing X-band planetary radar transmitter from 365 kW to 1 MW CW is discussed. The paper covers the basic transmitter system requirements as dictated by the specifications for the radar. The characteristics and expected performance of the high-power klystrons are considered and the transmitter power amplifier system is discussed. Also included in the discussion is the design of the exiter system. Two alternative feed systems for delivering the 1-MW CW signal to the antenna system are described. The expected performance of the beam supply, heat exchanger, and monitor and control devices is also presented. Finally, an assessment of the state-of-the-art technology to meet system requirements is given and possible areas of difficulty are summarized.
Microwave Transmitter With Multimode Output Section
Output-waveguide structure transports 400 kW of continuous-wave signal power at 34.5 GHz. Transmitter generates 400 kW of continuous-wave (CW) signal power. Main feature of conceptual design of this microwave transmitter is output section. Output waveguide structure includes mode converter, directional coupler, polarization monitor, and corrugated overmoded output section. Output directional pattern suitable for antenna illumination without flared feedhorn.
