X-ray Response of the Fully-Depleted, p-Channel SiSeRO-CCD

We present an X-ray characterization of a fully depleted, 725 $μ$m thick p-channel SiSeRO CCD. Measurements with a $^{55}$Fe source yield an energy resolution of $54 \pm 0.9$ eV ($14.6 \pm 0.25 e^{-}$) at 5.9 keV for single-pixel events, demonstrating that the SiSeRO amplifier preserves the intrinsic charge resolution of the CCD under multi-sample non-destructive readout. Characterization with a $^{241}$Am source extends the response to higher-energy photons, with reconstructed spectral features observed between 9-26 keV and the 59.5 keV $γ$ emission. These measurements, together with a muon-derived diffusion calibration, show that charge transport and diffusion are consistent with interactions spanning the full sensor depth. These results demonstrate that the SiSeRO CCD simultaneously achieves sub-electron noise performance and efficient charge collection in a thick, fully depleted silicon detector. This combination enables X-ray spectroscopy across a broad energy range while maintaining sensitivity to faint signals.

The Spectroscopic Stage-5 Experiment

The existence, properties, and dynamics of the dark sectors of our universe pose fundamental challenges to our current model of physics, and large-scale astronomical surveys may be our only hope to unravel these long-standing mysteries. In this white paper, we describe the science motivation, instrumentation, and survey plan for the next-generation spectroscopic observatory, the Stage-5 Spectroscopic Experiment (Spec-S5). Spec-S5 is a new all-sky spectroscopic instrument optimized to efficiently carry out cosmological surveys of unprecedented scale and precision. The baseline plan for Spec-S5 involves upgrading two existing 4-m telescopes to new 6-m wide-field facilities, each with a highly multiplexed spectroscopic instrument capable of simultaneously measuring the spectra of 13,000 astronomical targets. Spec-S5, which builds and improves on the hardware used for previous cosmology experiments, represents a cost-effective and rapid approach to realizing a more than 10$\times$ gain in spectroscopic capability compared to the current state-of-the-art represented by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument project (DESI). Spec-S5 will provide a critical scientific capability in the post-Rubin and post-DESI era for advancing cosmology, fundamental physics, and astrophysics in the 2030s.

Delta-Doped High Purity Silicon UV-NIR CCDs with High QE and Low Dark Current

Delta doping process was developed on p-channel CCDs for MIDEX-Orion and JDEM/SNAP and was applied to large format (2k x4k) CCDs. Delta doping is applied to fully-fabricated CCDs (complete with Al metallization). High QE and low dark current is demonstrated with delta doped p-channel CCDs. In-house AR coating is demonstrated. Advantages include: Delta doping enables high QE and stability across the entire spectral range attainable with silicon. Delta doping is a low temperature process and is compatible with fully-fabricated detector arrays. Same base device for Orion two channels. High radiation tolerance and no thinning requirements of high purity p-channel. CCDs are additional advantages.
