Ring current particle distributions during the magnetic storms of 16-18 December 1971

In an effort to summarize the constrasting development of the stormtime ring currents during the December 16-18, 1971 magnetic storms, maps were drawn indicating the proton energy density spatial/temporal distributions. The maps contain distributions for the 5 to 138 keV protons for each of seven orbits. The first storm was not characteristic of a single substorm nor a fully developed magnetic storm, but it was comprised of a sudden commencement, a positive phase, and multiple substorms producing a small depression in the magnetic field. The second storm was classical in development with a short two hour growth phase. Energy density distribution constrasts for the two storms show the second storm displayed three dominant features over the first storm. They were: (1) the intensities were 2 1/2 times larger, (2) the depths of penetration were 1/2 to 1 Reynolds number lower, and (3) the distribution became symmetric.

S-cubed-a spacecraft and experiment description

The launch of the Explorer 45 satellite and the instruments installed in the satellite are discussed. The scientific objectives of the first mission, the orbital parameters, and the capabilities of the data system are examined. The satellite is designed to carry out investigations of specific magnetospheric phenomena in the heart of the magnetosphere. The data handling system is programmable from the ground for greater flexibility.

Comparison of calcium and phosphorus excretion with bone density changes during restraint in immature Macaca nemestrina primates.

Calcium and phosphorus balance data on Macaca nemestrina monkeys during immobilization are presented and correlated with X-ray bone densitometry findings. A positive mineral balance was maintained during the immobilized period. A reduced bone density was observed in most skeletal sites examined with increased density observed in epiphyseal regions. Migration of mineral from one site to another is suggested as a possible explanation for the findings.

Comparison of very-low-frequency auroral hiss with precipitating low-energy electrons by the use of simultaneous data from two Ogo 4 experiments.

Determination of the origin of auroral hiss by comparing the records of a vlf experiment (0.3 to 18 kHz) with simultaneous data obtained by an auroral-particle experiment having detectors for precipitating electrons at 0.7, 2.3, and 7.3 keV. It is found that, on the dayside of the earth, the occurrence of vlf hiss correlates well with precipitation events at 0.7 keV, but in general very poorly with activity in the higher-energy channels. Exact correlation between variations in vlf hiss intensity and in electron fluxes is rare even at 0.7 keV. In addition, vlf hiss tends to be observed over a somewhat larger spatial region than precipitating 0.7-keV electrons. It is concluded that, on the dayside, auroral hiss is generated by soft (E less than 1 keV) 'cusp region' electrons and that the lack of detailed correlation between the two phenomena is caused by propagation effects as the hiss travels downward and spreads from the generation region.

Tissue enzyme studies in Macaca nemestrina monkeys.

Total enzyme activities in fresh tissue specimens from major organs of Macaca nemestrina were analyzed for lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine phosphokinase (CPK), and aldolase. The concentration of these enzymes varied among the different tissue with skeletal muscle, heart, and brain having the highest activities. LDH isozymes determinations for the various tissues were also made. The spectrum of LDH isozyme distribution appears to be quite specific and characteristic for at least some of the tissues analyzed.
