Convertible engine system for high speed rotorcraft

The identification of engine technology needed for high speed rotorcraft and to also provide suitable propulsion data for the High Speed Rotor Craft is presented. The several objectives are: (1) to generate technology planning data for NASA, (2) to help understand the propulsion requirements of new aircraft types being considered, and (3) to have a source of consistent engine data for the airframe companies doing the studies. This study is primarily directed at Folding Tilt Rotor types with some consideration given to the X-Wing type.

Powerplant design for one-engine-inoperative operation

Regulatory changes are proposed for new engine certification for multi-engine helicopters to account for contingency operations when one engine goes out at take-off. The new rules are needed because current regulations define category A and B conditions as one-engine out, land immediately, or continue take-off, respectively. Category A is seldom feasible while Category B requires oversize engines, implying lowered fuel efficiencies. However, NASA studies have shown that engines with large contingency power can operate more efficiently in normal conditions due to decreased coolant flow. Techniques for realizing up to a 50 percent power augmentation with minor modifications of existing engines are described.

Rotorcraft contingency power study

Twin helicopter engines are often sized by the power requirement of a safe mission completion after the failure of one of the two engines. This study was undertaken for NASA Lewis by General Electric Co. to evaluate the merits of special design features to provide a 2-1/2 Contingency Power rating, permitting an engine size reduction. The merits of water injection, turbine cooling airflow modulation, throttle push, and a propellant auxiliary power plant were evaluated using military Life Cycle Cost (LCC) and commercial helicopter Direct Operating Cost (DOC) merit factors in a rubber engine and a rubber aircraft scenario.

Rotorcraft convertible engine study

Convertible propulsion systems for advanced rotorcraft are evaluated in terms of their impact on aircraft operating economics and fuel consumption. A variety of propulsion system concepts, including separate thrust and power producing engines, convertible fan/shaft engines, and auxiliary propeller configurations are presented. The merits of each are evaluated in two different rotorcraft missions: an intercity, commercial transport of the ABC(TM) type, and an offshore oil ring supply ship of the X-wing type. The variable inlet guide vane fan/shaft converting engine and auxiliary propeller configurations are shown to offer significant advantages over all the other systems evaluated, in terms of both direct operating cost and fuel consumption.

Propulsion system study for Small Transport Aircraft Technology (STAT)

Propulsion system technologies applicable to the generation of commuter airline aircraft expected to enter service in the 1990's are identified and evaluated in terms of their impact on aircraft operating economics and fuel consumption. The most promising technologies in the areas of engine, propeller, gearbox, and nacelle design are recommended for future research. Each item under consideration is evaluated relative to a modern baseline engine, the General Electric CT7-5, in a current technology aircraft flying a fixed range and payload. The analysis is presented for two aircraft sizes (30 and 50 passenger), over a range of mission lengths (100 to 1100 km) and fuel costs ($264 to $396 per cu m).

Energy efficient engine: Preliminary design and integration studies

Parametric design and mission evaluations of advanced turbofan configurations were conducted for future transport aircraft application. Economics, environmental suitability and fuel efficiency were investigated and compared with goals set by NASA. Of the candidate engines which included mixed- and separate-flow, direct-drive and geared configurations, an advanced mixed-flow direct-drive configuration was selected for further design and evaluation. All goals were judged to have been met except the acoustic goal. Also conducted was a performance risk analysis and a preliminary aerodynamic design of the 10 stage 23:1 pressure ratio compressor used in the study engines.

Study of unconventional aircraft engines designed for low energy consumption

A study of unconventional engine cycle concepts, which may offer significantly lower energy consumption than conventional subsonic transport turbofans, is described herein. A number of unconventional engine concepts were identified and parametrically studied to determine their relative fuel-saving potential. Based on results from these studies, regenerative, geared, and variable-boost turbofans, and combinations thereof, were selected along with advanced turboprop cycles for further evaluation and refinement. Preliminary aerodynamic and mechanical designs of these unconventional engine configurations were conducted and mission performance was compared to a conventional, direct-drive turofan reference engine. Consideration is given to the unconventional concepts, and their state of readiness for application. Areas of needed technology advancement are identified.

Study of Turbofan Engines Designed for Low Enery Consumption

Subsonic transport turbofan engine design and technology features which have promise of improving aircraft energy consumption are described. Task I addressed the selection and evaluation of features for the CF6 family of engines in current aircraft, and growth models of these aircraft. Task II involved cycle studies and the evaluation of technology features for advanced technology turbofans, consistent with initial service in 1985. Task III pursued the refined analysis of a specific design of an advanced technology turbofan engine selected as the result of Task II studies. In all of the above, the impact upon aircraft economics, as well as energy consumption, was evaluated. Task IV summarized recommendations for technology developments which would be necessary to achieve the improvements in energy consumption identified.

TF-34 turbofan quiet engine study

A study of high bypass turbofan engines in heavily sound-suppressed nacelles based on the TF-34 engine. The four-engine noise objective was 95 PNdb at four locations typical of takeoff and landing. Three engines were studied; these had fan pressure ratios, bypass ratios, and fan tip speeds respectively of 1.48/6.5/404 m/sec (1327 ft/sec), 1.25/13/305 (1000), 1.25/13/366(1200). The bypass 13 engines had a variable pitch fan, direct- and gear-driven. Noise suppressive treatment was identified which met 95 PNdb objective except for sideline liftoff at 6.5 bypass, full power, which was 2 PNdb noisier; at 90% power, 95 PNdb was achieved.
