Real-time edge-enhanced optical correlator

The performance of five symbol lock detectors are compared. They are the square-law detector with overlapping (SQOD) and non-overlapping (SQNOD) integrators, the absolute value detectors with overlapping and non-overlapping (AVNOD) integrators and the signal power estimator detector (SPED). The analysis considers various scenarios when the observation interval is much larger or equal to the symbol synchronizer loop bandwidth, which has not been considered in previous analyses. Also, the case of threshold setting in the absence of signal is considered. It is shown that the SQOD outperforms all others when the threshold is set in the presence of signal, independent of the relationship between loop bandwidth and observation period. On the other hand, the SPED outperforms all others when the threshold is set in the presence of noise only.

Effects Of Phase Jitter On Lock Detection In QPSK

Report presents study of performances of digital carrier-signal-tracking loops used in reception of radio signals containing quadrature-phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) modulation representing binary non-return-to-zero data. Presents mathematical models of received signal and of noise. Describes lock-detector algorithm and presents equations characterizing lock-detection performance. Equations applied in analyses of three QPSK carrier-tracking loops: Costas crossover loop, maximum a posteriori estimation loop, and generalized Costas loop. Results of computer simulations agree with equations.

Digital Extraction Of Doppler Shift In An Advanced Receiver

Report describes demonstration of ability of Advanced Receiver II (ARX II) to extract Doppler shifts in radio telemetry signals from spacecraft by digital processing. Frequency of sampling clock fixed and derived from frequency-and-timing subsystem. Although this can result in noninteger number of samples per symbol, it enables digital extraction of Doppler shift. ARX II operates with older receiver called "Block IV". ARX II performed at least as well as, and in most cases better than, Block IV.

Advanced Receiver For Phase-Shift-Keyed Signals

ARX II is second "breadboard" version of advanced receiver, a hybrid digital/analog receiving subsystem, extracting symbols and Doppler shifts from weak phase-shift-keyed signals. Useful in terrestrial digital communication systems.

Two AFC Loops For Low CNR And High Dynamics

Two alternative digital automatic-frequency-control (AFC) loops proposed to acquire (or reacquire) and track frequency of received carrier radio signal. Intended for use where carrier-to-noise ratios (CNR's) low and carrier frequency characterized by high Doppler shift and Doppler rate because of high relative speed and acceleration, respectively, between transmitter and receiver. Either AFC loops used in place of phase-locked loop. New loop concepts integrate ideas from classical spectrum-estimation, digital-phase-locked-loop, and Kalman-Filter theories.

Digital Doppler measurement with spacecraft

Digital and analog phase-locked loop (PLL) receivers were operated in parallel, each tracking the residual carrier from a spacecraft. The PLL tracked the downlink carrier and measured its instantaneous phase. This information, combined with a knowledge of the uplink carrier and the transponder ratio, permitted the computation of a Doppler observable. In this way, two separate Doppler measurements were obtained for one observation window. The two receivers agreed on the magnitude of the Doppler effect to within 1 mHz. There was less jitter on the data from the digital receiver. This was due to its smaller noise bandwidth. The demonstration and its results are described.

Analysis Of Lock Detection In Costas Loops

Report presents analysis of detection of phase lock in Costas loops, used in coherent binary-phase-shift-keying communication systems to track both subcarrier and suppressed carrier signals. Detection of phase lock important part of operation and monitoring of operation of Costas or other tracking loop, provides insight into behavior of loop in real time. Focuses on effects of phase jitter and correlation between samples of phase error in all-digital Costas loop, in which lock detection implemented via algorithm. Applicable to both sinusoidal and square-law carrier signals, incorporates new mathematical models of square-law and absolute-value detectors.

Design of a communications system for multiple telemetry data channels operating simultaneously with a coherent turn-around ranging channel

This paper presents a simple technique to design a phase-modulated residual carrier communications link for optimum performance. The emphasis is on two data channels which are operated simultaneously with a ranging signal. The data channels employ PCM/PM and PCM/PSK/PM modulation schemes for high and low data rate channels, respectively. The technique proposed here selects the optimum (1) subcarrier frequency to minimize the interference between the two data channels, and (2) modulation indices for optimum balance of power between the two telemetry data channels and the coherent turn around ranging channel. The selected set of optimum modulation indices will allow for the specified bit error rate (BER) degradations in the two data channels. Although this technique is proposed to optimize the performance degradation for two data channels, generalizations can be made for more than two data channels.
