Ultrasonic Communication in Solid Channels using OFDM

Using an ultrasonic signal for communication is an alternate solution when electromagnetic waves are not feasible for carrying the information through the channel. We can use the ultrasonic signal to conduct communication in different types of media such as solid, liquid, and gas. In this study, we use ultrasound for communication through a metal plate channel. A metal plate is a highly dispersive and frequency selective channel with a severe multipath effect. The OFDM modulation method is customized for the ultrasonic communication channel to enhance communication reliability and reduce the bit error rate. With the channel frequency response, we adaptively map the transmitted information to optimize the selection of subcarriers frequency bands for the highest possible throughput.

Performance Evaluation of High-Temperature Ultrasonic Communication System

Ultrasonic communication is a technique that allows transmitting information through a solid material such as tubes or bars using high-frequency elastic waves. The communication channels often extend into a high-temperature range in the field of power, oil, or nuclear industry. When the temperature is taken into consideration, the ultrasonic wave propagation through the solid channel is complex and unpredictable. It is necessary to study the influence of temperature on the ultrasonic guided wave to improve ultrasonic communication. In this study, a temperature control system is assembled to adjust the temperature of a steel pipe channel ranging from room temperature to 150 degrees C. The temperature performance evaluation is conducted to estimate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and bit error rate (BER) of transferring the ultrasonic signal. The work aims to develop a reliable ultrasonic communication system in a high-temperature environment. The system temperature can be maintained at 150 degrees C and the LiNbO3 transducers are used as transmitters and receivers. No power amplifier is used in the communication system. The high-temperature ultrasonic communication system (HT-UCS) is feasible at 150 degrees C and can achieve a bit rate of 10 kbps without any error.

Software-Defined Ultrasonic Communication System Based on Time-reversal Signal Processing

Ultrasonic communication through solid channels suffers from channel dispersion, attenuation, and multipath effect. For example, in elbow shape pipes or complex structures, the elastic waves are reflected and reverberated in multipath resulting in a major dispersion of the signals. In solid channels such as flat bar, multipath propagation is the main reason for bit-wavelet spreading and intersymbol interference (ISI). The conventional modulation method like OOK (on-off-keying) or PSK (phase-shift-keying) fails to provide a useful Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). Time-reversal (TR) signal processing method is a promising technique that can compress the spreading of the bit-wavelet and strengthen the peak signal energy on the receiver. In this study, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using ABAQUS software tools is used to characterize the bit-wavelet spreading effect caused by dispersive communication channels. Also, this study presents the impact of TR ultrasonic communication as a function of excitation pulse width, channel length, and carrier frequency through a flat-bar channel. A Software-Defined System-on-Chip (SD-SoC) platform is examined as a viable solution for the low-complexity and energy-efficient ultrasonic communication system. The proposed TR based SD-SoC ultrasonic communication system can make full use of signal dispersion for peak performance by minimizing the ISI within a dispersive and reverberant metal channel.
