A STOL airworthiness investigation using a simulation of an augmentor wing transport. Volume 2: Simulation data and analysis

A simulator study of STOL airworthiness was conducted using a model of an augmentor wing transport. The approach, flare and landing, go-around, and takeoff phases of flight were investigated. The simulation and the data obtained are described. These data include performance measures, pilot commentary, and pilot ratings. A pilot/vehicle analysis of glide slope tracking and of the flare maneuver is included.

A STOL airworthiness investigation using a simulation of an augmentor wing transport. Volume 1: Summary of results and airworthiness implications

A simulator study of STOL airworthiness criteria was conducted using a model of an augmentor wing transport. The approach, flare and landing, go-around, and takeoff phases of flight were investigated. The results are summarized and possible implications with regard to airworthiness criteria are discussed. The results provide a data base for future STOL airworthiness requirements and a preliminary indication of potential problem areas. The results are also compared to the results from an earlier simulation of the Breguet 941S. Where possible, airworthiness criteria are proposed for consideration.

Closed loop analysis of manual flare and landing

This paper describes an approach to analyzing the manual flare and landing of an airplane. The basis of this approach is a mathematical model of the flare maneuver which is derived from manual landings of both real and simulated aircraft. This flare model in turn lends itself to a linear closed loop system description of the combined pilot/vehicle. Furthermore, simple Laplace transform methods can be used to map flare performance as functions of the flare maneuver. Having this link between flare maneuver and landing performance, we can estimate the pilot's ease in achieving desired levels of landing performance. Examples of this approach will be given using the results of a STOL airplane approach and landing simulation.

Aircraft handling qualities data

Available information on weight and inertia, aerodynamic derivatives, control characteristics, and stability augmentation systems is documented for 10 representative contemporary airplanes. Data sources are given for each airplane. Flight envelopes are presented and dimensional derivatives, transfer functions for control inputs, and several selected handling qualities parameters have been computed and are tabulated for 10 different flight conditions including the power approach configuration. The airplanes documented are the NT-33A, F-104A, F-4C, X-15, HL-10, Jetstar, CV-880M, B-747, C-5A, and XB-70A.
