Stellar wind variations in HD 45166: The continuing story

High resolution SWP IUE spectra of HD 45166 (qWR+B8V) obtained over a 36 hr continuous run, together with earlier observations, reveal 2 distinct modes of UV variability in this object. Gross, epoch-linked changes are seen in the strengths of the qWR emission lines, accompanied by large changes in its highly ionized photospheric absorption spectrum. Rapid (hours) variability in strong, multiple, high velocity, wind discrete absorption components (DAC), in the CIV lambda 1550 resonance lines, which superpose to give the appearance of a broad P Cygni absorption profile at many epochs is also observed. These multiple DAC's (often at least 3 are seen) propagate in velocity, from 0.6 to 1.0 v inf, on a timescale of 1 day, implying an acceleration of 180 cm/s comparable to that seen in O-type stars.

Analysis of spatially resolved IUE spectra of 0957+561A,B: A gravitationally lensed double quasar

A study of 18 IUE spectra of the gravitationally lensed quasar, 0957+561A,B was used to search for time delays between light variation in the 2 components. Evidence for substantial, rapid variability in Component A in 1980, followed by a light variation in the other component 20 months later is found. However, it is argued that these variations do not record the same event in the quasar, and so, cannot be used to derive a value for the Hubble constant. The cause of the rapid variation in Component A in 1980 is not understood, but it does not appear to be a microlensing event.

Astrophysics from large databases - The example of IUE

Ways to access the IUE data base and methods for processing and analyzing the IUE data are discussed. The characteristics of the data base are described and the types of objects observed by the IUE are listed. The methods for searching the IUE catalogs and conducting multicatalog searches are considered. In addition, trends in the application of astronomical data bases are examined, including the prospects for future software packages for data processing and analysis.

Deconvolution of a pre-outburst picture of SN 1987A

The block iterative method (Young 1971) of algebraic image restoration is applied to a photographic plate of the field around SN 1987A obtained 4 yr before outburst by Chu at the CTIO 4-m telescope. By setting appropriate constraints for the solution on a pixel-by-pixel basis, the image of a starfield centered on Sk -69 202, the precursor to the supernova, is restored. It is found that this star has two companions, which others (e.g., Walborn et al., 1987 and West et al., 1987) have also noted and designated as Star 2 and Star 3. Also found is marginal evidence for Star 4, a weak source at theta = 222 deg, r = 1.9 arcsec. Correction for the contributions of these companions yields an estimate of the magnitude for Sk -69 202 alone of V = 12.37.

Block iterative restoration of astronomical images with the massively parallel processor

A method is described for algebraic image restoration capable of treating astronomical images. For a typical 500 x 500 image, direct algebraic restoration would require the solution of a 250,000 x 250,000 linear system. The block iterative approach is used to reduce the problem to solving 4900 121 x 121 linear systems. The algorithm was implemented on the Goddard Massively Parallel Processor, which can solve a 121 x 121 system in approximately 0.06 seconds. Examples are shown of the results for various astronomical images.

Mass distribution and evolutionary scheme for central stars of planetary nebulae

IUE data and a distance measuring method that considered central stars in optically thick nebulae were used to examine mass distributions of planetary nebulae. Other data such as spectral type, spatial and kinematic characteristics, etc., were studied to derive relationships between population type and mass distribution. A central star mass range of at least 0.55 solar mass was obtained. Stars with masses of at least 0.64 solar mass, concentrated in the galactic disk, originated from 1.5 solar mass stars. Low mass nuclei originated in old disk or halo populations and evolved from 1.0 solar mass objects. A mass-loss parameter value of 1/3 was calculated for red giants, implying that white dwarfs evolve from stars of under 5 solar masses. Mass distributions around planetary nuclei were concluded to follow patterns associated with the individual mass.

On the terminal velocities of winds in central stars of planetary nebulae

The theory of radiatively driven stellar winds is applied to the central stars of planetary nebulae, and the predicted relation between escape velocity and terminal velocity of the wind is assessed. Ultraviolet spectra obtained with IUE indicate that the terminal velocities of winds from planetary nuclei, which range from 600 to 3600 km/sec, are strongly correlated with stellar temperature. The theory of radiative winds predicts that the terminal velocity of the wind = T(1.2), the constant of proportionality being a function of stellar mass and line-force parameter, alpha. Given a mass of 0.60 solar mass for central stars with winds, the line-force parameter alpha = 0.70, a value higher than Abbott's predictions, alpha = 0.61 (1982).
