Instant Startup and Grid Synchronization of Inverter Based Resources

This paper introduces an innovative approach for instant startup of inverter-based resources (IBRs), which attains synchronization with the grid via the already embedded direct current feedback control. The startup process utilizes direct current control throughout each switching cycle, enabling a process that is free from inrush current. Uniquely, this method determines the grid phase angle by evaluating the current differences across switching cycles, a significant difference from traditional methods that often rely on grid or points of common coupling (PCC) voltage. An analytical model has been constructed, highlighting that the grid phase angle can be obtained in just two switching cycles. The paper details the principle of instant grid synchronization and presents both simulation and experimental results to substantiate the proposed method.

Switching-cycle-based Startup for Grid-connected Inverters

Conventional inverter startups, or grid synchronization, are hindered by slow dynamics and inrush current issues, which impede the integration of more renewable energy resources into the power grid. This paper overcomes the barriers by introducing a novel switching cycle-based startup approach for grid-connected inverters, eliminating the need for voltage sensors and phase-locked loops (PLLs). The proposed method surpasses the bandwidth constraints of traditional PLL-based techniques and achieves grid synchronization in just two switching cycles. Relying solely on sensed three-phase currents, synchronization is accomplished without inrush currents or the need for additional hardware or increased software complexity, resulting in a faster inverter startup. The paper also presents a sensitivity analysis to discuss the impact of critical parameters on the method's accuracy. As a result, the effectiveness of the proposed technique is demonstrated through simulation and experimental results.

Group Projected subspace pursuit for IDENTification of variable coefficient differential equations (GP-IDENT)

We propose an effective and robust algorithm for identifying partial differential equations (PDEs) with space-time varying coefficients from the noisy observation of a single solution trajectory. Identifying unknown differential equations from noisy data is a difficult task, and it is even more challenging with space and time varying coefficients in the PDE. The proposed algorithm, GP-IDENT, has three ingredients: (i) we use B-spline bases to express the unknown space and time varying coefficients, (ii) we propose Group Projected Subspace Pursuit (GPSP) to find a sequence of candidate PDEs with various levels of complexity, and (iii) we propose a new criterion for model selection using the Reduction in Residual (RR) to choose an optimal one among a pool of candidates. The new GPSP considers group projected subspaces which is more robust than existing methods in distinguishing correlated group features. We test GP-IDENT on a variety of PDEs and PDE systems, and compare it with the state-of-the-art parametric PDE identification algorithms under different settings to illustrate its outstanding performance. Furthermore, our experiments show that GP-IDENT is effective in identifying the correct terms from a large dictionary, and our model selection scheme is robust to noise.
