Pyrochlore NaYbO2: A Potential Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate

The search for quantum spin liquids (QSL) and chemical doping in such materials to explore superconductivity have continuously attracted intense interest. Here, we report the discovery of a potential QSL candidate, pyrochlore-lattice β-NaYbO2. Colorless and transparent NaYbO2 single crystals, layered α-NaYbO2 (∼250 μm on edge) and octahedral β-NaYbO2 (∼50 μm on edge), were grown for the first time. Synchrotron X-ray single-crystal diffraction unambiguously determined that the newfound β-NaYbO2 belongs to the three-dimensional pyrochlore structure characterized by the R3̅m space group, corroborated by synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and pair distribution function. Magnetic measurements revealed no long-range magnetic order or spin glass behavior down to 0.4 K with a low boundary spin frustration factor of 17.5, suggesting a potential QSL ground state. Under high magnetic fields, the potential QSL state was broken and spins order. Our findings reveal that NaYbO2 is a fertile playground for studying novel quantum states.

Lattice and magnetic structure in the van der Waals antiferromagnet VBr 3

Here, we report a comprehensive investigation of the lattice and magnetic structure in van der Waals antiferromagnet VBr 3 , characterized by a BiI 3 -type structure at room temperature. Neutron diffraction experiments were performed on both polycrystalline and single-crystalline VBr 3 samples, revealing clear magnetic Bragg peaks emerging below the Néel temperature of T N =26.5 K. These magnetic Bragg peaks can be indexed by k=(0, 0.5, 1) in hexagonal notation. Our refinement analysis suggests that the antiferromagnetic order in VBr 3 manifests as a zigzag structure. Moreover, we observed peak splitting for nuclear Bragg peaks in the HK plane below the structure transition temperature of T S =90.4 K, indicating the breaking of threefold symmetry within the ab plane.

Mechanochemically Robust LiCoO 2 with Ultrahigh Capacity and Prolonged Cyclability

Pushing intercalation-type cathode materials to their theoretical capacity often suffers from fragile Li-deficient frameworks and severe lattice strain, leading to mechanical failure issues within the crystal structure and fast capacity fading. This is particularly pronounced in layered oxide cathodes because the intrinsic nature of their structures is susceptible to structural degradation with excessive Li extraction, which remains unsolved yet despite attempts involving elemental doping and surface coating strategies. Herein, a mechanochemical strengthening strategy is developed through a gradient disordering structure to address these challenges and push the LiCoO 2 (LCO) layered cathode approaching the capacity limit (256 mAh g -1 , up to 93% of Li utilization). This innovative approach also demonstrates exceptional cyclability and rate capability, as validated in practical Ah-level pouch full cells, surpassing the current performance benchmarks. Comprehensive characterizations with multiscale X-ray, electron diffraction, and imaging techniques unveil that the gradient disordering structure notably diminishes the anisotropic lattice strain and exhibits high fatigue resistance, even under extreme delithiation states and harsh operating voltages. Consequently, this designed LCO cathode impedes the growth and propagation of particle cracks, and mitigates irreversible phase transitions. In conclusion, this work sheds light on promising directions toward next-generation high-energy-density battery materials through structural chemistry design.

Decoding Active Sites for Highly Efficient Semihydrogenation of Acetylene in Palladium–Copper Nanoalloys

Accurately decoding the three-dimensional atomic structure of surface active sites is essential yet challenging for a rational catalyst design. Here, we used comprehensive techniques combining the pair distribution function and reverse Monte Carlo simulation to reveal the surficial distribution of Pd active sites and adjacent coordination environment in palladium-copper nanoalloys. After the fine-tuning of the atomic arrangement, excellent catalytic performance with 98% ethylene selectivity at complete acetylene conversion was obtained in the Pd 34 Cu 66 nanocatalysts, outperforming most of the reported advanced catalysts. Further, t he quantitative deciphering shows a large number of active sites with a Pd-Pd coordination number of 3 distributed on the surface of Pd 34 Cu 66 nanoalloys, which play a decisive role in highly efficient semihydrogenation. This finding not only opens the way for guiding the precise design of bimetal nanocatalysts from atomic-level insight but also provides a method to resolve the spatial structure of active sites.

Realizing High Capacity and Zero Strain in Layered Oxide Cathodes via Lithium Dual-Site Substitution for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Sodium-ion batteries have garnered unprecedented attention as an electrochemical energy storage technology, but it remains challenging to design high-energy-density cathode materials with low structural strain during the dynamic (de)sodiation processes. In this paper, we report a P2-layered lithium dual-site-substituted Na 0.7 Li 0.03 [Mg 0.15 Li 0.07 Mn 0.75 ]O 2 (NMLMO) cathode material, in which Li ions occupy both transition-metal (TM) and alkali-metal (AM) sites. The combination of theoretical calculations and experimental characterizations reveals that Li TM creates Na–O–Li electronic configurations to boost the capacity derived from the oxygen anionic redox, while Li AM serves as LiO 6 prismatic pillars to stabilize the layered structure through suppressing the detrimental phase transitions. As a result, NMLMO delivers a high specific capacity of 266 mAh g –1 and simultaneously exhibits the nearly zero-strain characteristic within a wide voltage range of 1.5–4.6 V. Our findings highlight the effective way of dual-site substitution to break the capacity–stability trade-off in cathode materials for advanced rechargeable batteries.

Tunning the linkage of structure units to enable stable spinel-based cathode in the wide potential window

The low practical capacity (<140 mA h g –1 ) of spinel phase LiMn 2–x Ni x O 4 (0 < x < 1) excludes it from high energy density lithium ion batteries (LIBs) for powering electric vehicles. Extending the operating potential window from 3.0 to 4.8 V to 2.0–4.8 V can double the capacity, but result in fast capacity decay due to the drastic cubic-tetragonal phase transition below 3.0 V, induced by serious Jahn-Teller (J-T) distortion of structure units (Mn 3+ )O 6 octahedra. Herein, we propose a novel strategy to suppress J-T distortion by tuning the linkage of structure units MnO 6 octahedra. The original full-vertex-sharing LiO 4 tetrahedra around MnO 6 octahedra in spinel phase are partially replaced by edge-sharing LiO 6 octahedra, which relate Mn-O bonds along the dz 2 direction with those along the d xy plane, thus significantly mitigating J-T distortion and suppressing the phase transition when discharged to 2.0 V. Following this strategy, the prepared spinel-based cathode achieves a high reversible capacity of about 290 mA h g –1 and an energy density up to 957 W h kg –1 with improved cycling stability. Furthermore, this work finds a new opportunity for the traditional spinel cathode towards applications in high energy density LIBs in a low cost and sustainable manner.

Grain size and structure distortion characterization of α-MgAgSb thermoelectric material by powder diffraction

Nanostructuring, structure distortion and/or disorder are the main manipulation techniques to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity and improve the figure of merit of thermoelectric materials. A single-phase α-MgAgSb sample, MgAg 0.97 Sb 0.99 , with high thermoelectric performance in near room temperature region was synthesized through a high-energy ball milling with a hot-pressing method. In this work, we report the average grain size of 24-28 nm and the accurate structure distortion, which are characterized by high-resolution neutron diffraction and synchrotron X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement data analysis. Both the small grain size and the structure distortion have a contribution to the low lattice thermal conductivity in MgAg 0.97 Sb 0.99 .

Fluorination effect for stabilizing cationic and anionic redox activities in cation-disordered cathode materials

We see that cation-disordered Li-excess cathodes with oxygen redox reactions are promising candidates for high-energy-density Li ion batteries. Nevertheless, the oxygen redox process that is required for the high capacity often comes with the oxygen loss, which leads to severe capacity degradation and voltage decay. In this work, we have successfully synthesized a series of Li-excess cation-disordered cathodes (Li 1.2 Mn 0.4+x Ti 0.4-x O 2-x Fx) (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) with different fluorine (F) contents. The electrochemical performance results show that the Li 1.2 Mn 0.55 Ti 0.25 O 1.85 F 0.15 (LMTOF0.15) exhibits the highest reversible capacity (275 mAh g -1 , under 30 mA g -1 ), cyclability, and voltage retentions. The mapping of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (mRIXS) and differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy (DEMS) results reveal that the fluorination enhances the reversible lattice oxygen redox reaction while suppressing irreversible gas release and surface reactions. The X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) during the initial two cycles shows that F-substitution alleviates the reduction of the Mn valence state during the whole (dis)charge processes in the bulk and at the surface of the material, results in higher average discharge voltage. In addition, the introduction of F improves the structural stability and suppresses local lattice distortion of the material. Therefore, LMTOF 0.15 is able to cycle with smaller polarization, less interfacial side reaction and Mn dissolution, and therefore results in enhanced cyclability. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the fluorination effect on the cationic and anionic redox activities in cation-disordered Li-excess cathodes.

Ultralow thermal conductivity from transverse acoustic phonon suppression in distorted crystalline α-MgAgSb

Low thermal conductivity is favorable for preserving the temperature gradient between the two ends of a thermoelectric material, in order to ensure continuous electron current generation. In high-performance thermoelectric materials, there are two main low thermal conductivity mechanisms: the phonon anharmonic in PbTe and SnSe, and phonon scattering resulting from the dynamic disorder in AgCrSe2 and CuCrSe2, which have been successfully revealed by inelastic neutron scattering. Using neutron scattering and ab initio calculations, we report here a mechanism of static local structure distortion combined with phononanharmonic-induced ultralow lattice thermal conductivity in α-MgAgSb. Since the transverse acoustic phonons are almost fully scattered by the compound’s intrinsic distorted rocksalt sublattice, the heat is mainly transported by the longitudinal acoustic phonons. The ultralow thermal conductivity in α-MgAgSb is attributed to its atomic dynamics being altered by the structure distortion, which presents a possible microscopic route to enhance the performance of similar thermoelectric materials.

A Novel NASICON‐Type Na 4 MnCr(PO 4 ) 3 Demonstrating the Energy Density Record of Phosphate Cathodes for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted incremental attention as a promising candidate for grid‐scale energy‐storage applications. To meet practical requirements, searching for new cathode materials with high energy density is of great importance. Herein, a novel Na superionic conductor (NASICON)‐type Na 4 MnCr(PO 4 ) 3 is developed as a high‐energy cathode for SIBs. The Na 4 MnCr(PO 4 ) 3 nanoparticles homogeneously embedded in a carbon matrix can present an extraordinary reversible capacity of 160.5 mA h g −1 with three‐electron reaction at ≈3.53 V during the Na + extraction/insertion process, realizing an unprecedentedly high energy density of 566.5 Wh kg −1 in the phosphate cathodes for SIBs. It is intriguing to reveal the underlying mechanism of the unique Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ , Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ , and Cr 3+ /Cr 4+ redox couples via X‐ray absorption near‐edge structure spectroscopy. The whole electrochemical reaction undergoes highly reversible single‐phase and biphasic transitions with a moderate volume change of 7.7% through in situ X‐ray diffraction and ex situ high‐energy synchrotron X‐ray diffraction. Combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, the superior performance is ascribed to the low ionic‐migration energy barrier and desirable Na‐ion diffusion kinetics. The present work can offer a new insight into the design of multielectron‐reaction cathode materials for SIBs.
