Edge magnetoplasmon dispersion and time-resolved plasmon transport in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator

A quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator breaks reciprocity by combining magnetic polarization and spin-orbit coupling to generate a unidirectional transmission of signals in the absence of an external magnetic field. Such behavior makes QAH materials a good platform for the innovation of circulator technologies. However, it remains elusive as to how the wavelength of the chiral edge plasmon relates to its frequency and how the plasmon wave packet is excited in the time domain in a QAH insulator. Here, we investigate the edge magnetoplasmon (EMP) resonances in Cr-(Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 by frequency and time domain measurements. From disk shaped samples with various dimensions, we obtain the dispersion relation of EMPs and extract the drift velocity of the chiral edge state. From the time-resolved transport measurements, we identify the velocity of the plasmon wave packet and observe a transition from the edge to bulk transport at an elevated temperature. We show that the frequency and time domain measurements are well modeled by loss from the microwave induced dissipative channels in the bulk area. Our results demonstrate that the EMP decay rate can be significantly reduced by applying a low microwave power and fabricating devices of larger diameter ≥ 100 µ m . In a R = 125 µ m sample, a nonreciprocity of 20 dB has been realized at 1.3 GHz, shining light on using QAH insulators to develop on-chip nonreciprocal devices. Spin–orbit torques in structures with asymmetric dusting layers

Current-induced spin–orbit torques (SOTs) in heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures have emerged as an efficient method for magnetization switching with applications in nonvolatile magnetic memory and logic devices. However, experimental realization of SOT switching of perpendicular magnetization requires an additional inversion symmetry breaking, calling for modifications of the conventional SOT heterostructures. In this work, we study SOTs and deterministic switching of perpendicular magnetization by inserting different asymmetric dusting layers at the heavy metal/ferromagnet interface. Similar to the previous works with lateral structural asymmetry, we study the emergence of current-induced perpendicular effective magnetic fields (H z eff ). By examining three different material combinations of heavy metal/dusting layers (W/IrMn, Pt/IrMn, and W/Ta), we shed light on the origins of H z eff ; we show that H z eff is generically created in all the studied asymmetric structures, has a close correlation with the interfacial magnetic anisotropy, and is independent of the signs of spin Hall angles of the materials. Furthermore, we show that the induction of H z eff enables field-free deterministic SOT switching of perpendicular magnetization. Our results can be used in designing SOT heterostructures for practical applications in nonvolatile technologies.

Ring-opening and hydrodenitrogenation of indole under hydrothermal conditions over Ni, Pt, Ru, and Ni-Ru bimetallic catalysts

Here, the activity and selectivity of activated-carbon-supported Ni, Pt, Ru, and Ni-Ru bimetallic catalysts was examined for hydrothermal denitrogenation of indole. The molar yield of pyrrole ring-opening compounds, without an added hydrogen source, are in the order: Ni < Pt < Ni 90 Ru 10 < Ni 75 Ru 25 < Ni 50 Ru 50 ~ Ni 25 Ru 75 ~ Ru. Ru-containing catalysts facilitated production of hydrocarbons (hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) products) when used with added formic acid (hydrogen source). We elucidated catalytic hydrothermal HDN pathways for indole based on the product distributions and the variation of their yields with time. Hydrogenation of indole to indoline is the primary pathway and ring-opening of indoline to form alkyl anilines is faster than forming HDN products (alkyl benzenes). DFT calculations confirmed experimental activity trends, showing Ru is more active than Ni for indole ring opening and for o-toluidine deamination. If no hydrogen source is present, directly breaking the N-C bond in the pyrrole ring is more favorable than breaking the C-N bond with an aromatic carbon. If a H source is provided, the pyrrole ring hydrogenates first, forming indoline, followed by cleavage of the C-N bond.
