Epoxy resin reinforced with carbonized chicken feathers: An innovative composite material with sustainable potentials

Here, this article explores a novel method for enhancing the mechanical properties of epoxy resin composites by incorporating carbonized chicken feathers as a filler material. The fabrication process involves carbonizing chicken feathers at 600°C and incorporating 5-10 wt% of the fillers into an epoxy matrix. The composites showed enhanced mechanical properties and samples containing 10 wt% filler exhibit the best properties. The performance corresponds to 49% increase in tensile strength, 16% rise in Young’s modulus, 40% improvement in flexural modulus, and 57% in flexural strength. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy were employed to characterize the filler. This characterization provides valuable insights into the structure and chemical composition of the pulverized carbonized chicken feathers that contributed to the attained improvement in composites’ properties. Microstructural examination of the developed composite under scanning electron microscope also provides insights into matrix-filler interface and dispersion of the fillers within the composite matrix. The study not only highlights the unique combination of carbonized feathers’ inherent strength and compatibility with the epoxy matrix but also underscores the eco-friendly nature of utilizing agricultural waste. The findings suggest promising applications in industries demanding lightweight, high-strength materials, which can contribute to sustainable engineering solutions.

Vacuum insulated glazing, valve, flexible seal, and method for making vacuum insulated glazing

A vacuum insulated glazing includes first and second spaced apart glass panes having perimeter portions defining a vacuum space between the glass panes. A vacuum valve is positioned at the perimeter portions of the glass panes and includes a valve body extending between the perimeter portions of the glass panes, and having first and second ends and a fluid conduit extending from the first end to the second end of the valve body and in fluid communication with the vacuum space. A one-way valve in the fluid conduit permits fluid flow from the vacuum space, and prevents fluid flow into the vacuum space. A suction fitting is provided for connecting the valve body to a suction device. An end seal between the perimeter portions of the glass panes is provided for hermetically sealing the vacuum space. A valve for a VIG and a method of making a VIG are also disclosed.

3D printable polymeric lightning strike protection system for fiber reinforced composites

The current embodiments include all-polymeric protective material for mitigating lightning strike damage. The protective material includes a hybrid matrix comprising PANI and MXene dispersed within a thermosetting epoxy resin. This hybrid matrix can be painted, printed, or applied as a conductive polymeric layer to a FRCP structure, for example an aircraft fuselage, wing, empennage, control surface (aileron, flap, slats, rudder, elevator) or a wind turbine blade. The protective material not only withstands lightning strikes, but also functions as shielding against electromagnetic interference and is corrosion-resistant and lightweight.

Development of multifunctional nylon 6,6-based nanocomposites with high electrical and thermal conductivities by scalable melt and dry blending methods for automotive applications

With the advent of intelligent automobile technology, the demand for multifunctional composites with higher electrical and thermal conductivities is increasing. We have herein reported for the first time the effect of polyolester on the dispersion of carbon nanotube (CNT) in the short-carbon fiber (CF)/nylon 6,6 (PA66) composite using a scalable melt-mixing and dry-blending method and its subsequent improvement in electrical and thermal conductivities. Masterbatches were prepared with a higher concentration of CNT (both untreated and polyolester-treated) followed by dry blended with reference composite (30 wt% CF and 10 wt% mineral fiber filled PA66) before making coupons via injection molding. A 500% and 63% improvements in electrical (3.14 S cm -1 ) and thermal conductivities (in-plane) (1.99 W m -1 K -1 ) conductivities were observed by adding 1.5 wt% treated CNT compared to the reference composite. The improvements were even higher than that of untreated CNT due to better dispersion. Furthermore, the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness reached 61 dB for 1.5 wt% treated CNT-filled composite (39% enhancement). In conclusion, these results are significant in imparting multiple functionalities to the automotive composite parts.

Enhanced through-thickness electrical conductivity and lightning strike damage response of interleaved vertically aligned short carbon fiber composites

Through-thickness electrical conductivity of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) is a key characteristic that determines the severity of lighting strike-induced damage. Carbon Fibers (CFs) are inherently electrically conductive and therefore provide high conductivity in the direction of the fiber orientation. However, electrical conductivities through the thickness and orthogonal to the CF orientation in CFRPs are governed by the insulating polymer matrix present between CFs. Here, in this work, through the thickness alignment of short CFs in between layers of CFRP laminates is demonstrated to improve the through-thickness electrical conductivity. Composites with interleaved vertically aligned short CF fibers (<150 μm) will be referred as V-fiber composites hereafter. The effect of the V-fiber on the lightning strike damage is evaluated against an artificial lightning strike of 100 kA (modified waveform A of SAE ARP-5412B standard). The improved through-thickness electrical conductivity of CFRP laminates (1.15 S/cm) through vertical alignment of short CFs was compared to reference CFRP laminates (0.13 S/cm) and was found to dissipate the artificial lightning strike current more efficiently. The surface damage after the artificial lightning strike in the V-fiber composites was reduced to 12.69 cm 2 compared to the reference CFRP surface damage of 57.67 cm 2 , a 78% reduction. It was also demonstrated that Joule heat generated due to lightning strike on the composites was significantly less than the reference sample using infrared (IR) thermography. A high retention (up to 78%) of flexural properties (modulus and strength) was observed in V-fiber composites post lightning strike impact as compared to only 47% retention in the reference panel.

System and method for additive manufacturing with toolpath bridges and resultant structure

A system and method for improving additive manufacturing, including additive manufacturing toolpaths, is provided. The system and method includes a toolpath generator that obtains initial toolpaths of an object, identifies isolated paths in the toolpaths, and adds bridge connections between neighboring isolated paths in each layer to improve the toolpaths. The bridge connections facilitate the continuous and non-stop deposition of each layer according to improved toolpaths during additive manufacture, which can reduce total deposition time and improve the resultant additive manufacture.

Long fiber injection molding

An improved method for obtaining high fiber volume fraction, long fiber injection molded articles is provided. According to one embodiment, the method includes forming an injection molding feedstock by cutting pre-impregnated fiber-reinforced tape into platelets. The platelets can be coated with a thin layer of polymer to allow sliding of the platelets with respect to each other at the early stages of plastication, rather than forcing relative motion of fibers with respect to each other. The method can further include the dispersion of material only in the final stages of the injection molding screw to promote gentle motion of the feedstock at the earlier stages of the plastication process. The method allows improvement of mechanical properties of articles manufactured with equipment and techniques that are prevalent in high volume automotive and consumer industries.
