An FIR cooled grating spectrometer for the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

The design and performance of a liquid-He-cooled spectrometer being developed for the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) to study FIR lines originating in the interstellar medium are discussed. Currently, the spectrometer contains six Ge:Ga photoconductor detectors mounted in integrating cavities and cooled to about 3 K; the collimator focal plane has space for 39 such detectors. The instrument achieves a maximum resolving power of 6000 by means of a 45-cm long echelle grating and is optically capable of operating in the spectral range 25-300 microns. A laboratory spectrum of water vapor, an atmospheric water absorption feature measured from the KAO with Mars as a source, and the forbidden O(2+) emission from W51-IRS1 are shown.

All-aluminum optical system for a large cryogenically cooled far infrared echelle spectrometer

In the past few years, NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) has made it possible to conduct pioneering observations of far infrared lines from astronomical sources. Such observations, in the case of wavelengths in the approximate range from 20 to 350 microns, cannot be performed from ground-based sites, because of telluric water absorption effects. Lines in the considered range provide information about the interstellar gas in molecular, neutral atomic, and ionized form of occurrence. The present paper provides a description of the development of the cryogenic optical system of a spectrometer designed to exploit the potential of the KAO for observing the far infrared lines. Attention is given to design goals and considerations, details of optical design, the fabrication of the optical system, the cryostat, and performance.

The 157 Micron (C II) Luminosity of the Galaxy

The diffuse far infrared (C II) emission of several regions of the Galactic plane were sampled. Mechanisms for the excitation of carbon ions are discussed in reference to the role of carbon ion transitions in cooling diffuse atomic hydrogen. Observations indicate that the C II emission probably arises at the edges of giant molecular clouds and appears to have localized knot-like features. The total C II luminosity of the Galaxy is approximately 6 to 10 to the 7th power L(solar).

A Far Infrared Echelle Spectrometer for the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

A liquid-helium-cooled grating spectrometer (CGS) is being developed as a facility instrument for the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO), primarily to study for infrared lines originating in the interstellar medium. A maximum resolving power of approximately 6000 is achieved by means of a 45 cm long Echelle grating and is optically capable of operating in the spectral range from 25 to 300 microns. An array of detectors is used to simultaneously measure a line and the adjacent continuum from astronomical sources. Currently six detectors allow measurements in the 30 to 120 micron spectral band. The instrument, its operation, and its performance are described.

A practical multi-spectrum Hadamard Transform Spectrometer

A Hadamard Transform Spectrometer (HTS) which simultaneously obtains fifteen infrared spectra, each having 255 spectral elements was constructed. Spectra are obtained essentially in real time through use of a minicomputer with 8K words of memory and a CRT display. This permits operation of the instrument in the field.

Errors in Hadamard spectroscopy or imaging caused by imperfect masks

An analysis is given of the errors in Hadamard spectroscopy that are caused by transparent slits in the mask being systematically wider or else narrower than they should be. It is shown that if the input spectrum consists of a single line, the distorted spectrum that is actually calculated consists of this line, plus four small blips. When the transparent slits are too wide, these blips are of equal height and the same sign, one pair surrounding the line, and another pair displaced a certain distance from it. When the slits are too narrow, the displaced blips have the same amplitude but are negative.

Detection of the (OIII)88.16Mu line in M17

The detection of a predicted transition, the fine structure line of O3 at 88.16 microns in the H 2 region M17, was reported. Line intensity was measured at 2.2 sub + 7 sub -0.7 times 10 to the 15th power.

A cooled telescope for infrared balloon astronomy

The characteristics of a 16 inch liquid helium cooled Cassegrain telescope with vibrating secondary mirror are discussed. The telescope is used in making far infrared astronomical observations. The system houses several different detectors for multicolor photometry. The cooled telescope has a ten to one increase in signal-to-noise ratio over a similar warm version and is installed in a high altitude balloon gondola to obtain data on the H2 region of the galaxy.

Expected far infrared polarization of H2 regions and the nuclei of galaxies

The expected polarization of far infrared sources is discussed, and it is shown that the observed degree of polarization generally depends on two factors: (1) the availability of a mechanism that can produce polarization, and (2) the gain in polarization which absorption or stimulated emission can produce within a source. It is pointed out that stimulated emission could produce sizeable gain changes in compact dust clouds such as those associated with H2 regions and possibly also in dense regions exhibiting OH and H2O masers. Whether such a gain can actually become positive (maser-like behavior) is not clear, but this would in any case depend on the chemical structure of the grain material and the spectral range of interest.
