Space-Environment Effects on Optical Cables

Results obtained from the Long-Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) JPL fiber optics experiment, which remained in low-earth orbit for 5 3/4 years, are discussed to illustrate the effects of the adverse space environment on fiber optic cables. The results of tests performed on the ten fiber optic cable samples, flown on the LDEF, are then compared to data obtained from similar laboratory tests performed on currently available fiber optic cables. The effects of radiation exposure, temperature cycling, polymer aging, and micrometeoroid impacts on fiber optic cables applied in space are discussed.

Radiation and temperature effects on LDEF fiber optic samples

Results obtained from the JPL Fiber Optics Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) Experiment since the June 1991 Experimenters' Workshop are addressed. Radiation darkening of laboratory control samples and the subsequent annealing was measured in the laboratory for the control samples. The long-time residual loss was compared to the LDEF flight samples and found to be in agreement. The results of laboratory temperature tests on the flight samples, extending over a period of about nine years, including the pre-flight and post-flight analysis periods, are described. The temperature response of the different cable samples varies widely, and appears in two samples to be affected by polymer aging. Conclusions to date are summarized.

Fiber Optic Tactical Local Network (FOTLAN)

A 100 Mbit/s FDDI (fiber distributed data interface) network interface unit is described that supports real-time data, voice and video. Its high-speed interrupt-driven hardware architecture efficiently manages stream and packet data transfer to the FDDI network. Other enhancements include modular single-mode laser-diode fiber optic links to maximize node spacing, optic bypass switches for increased fault tolerance, and a hardware performance monitor to gather real-time network diagnostics.

A high performance FDDI NIU for streaming voice, video, and data

A 100-Mbit/s FDDI network interface unit (NIU) is described that supports real-time data, voice and video. Its high-speed interrupt-driven hardware architecture efficiently manages stream and packet data transfers to the FDDI network. Other enhancements include modular single-mode laser-dioce fiber optic links to maximize node spacing, optic bypass switches for increased fault tolerance, and a hardware performance monitor to gather real-time network diagnostics.

Using Bit Errors To Diagnose Fiber-Optic Links

Technique for diagnosis of fiber-optic digital communication link in local-area network of computers based on measurement of bit-error rates. Variable optical attenuator inserted in optical fiber to vary power of received signal. Bit-error rate depends on ratio of peak signal power to root-mean-square noise in receiver. For optimum measurements, one selects bit-error rate between 10 to negative 8th power and 10 to negative 4th power. Greater rates result in low accuracy in determination of signal-to-noise ratios, while lesser rates require impractically long measurement times.

A fiber optic tactical voice/data network based on FDDI

An asynchronous high-speed fiber optic local area network is described that supports ordinary data packet traffic simultaneously with synchronous Tl voice traffic over a common FDDI token ring channel. A voice interface module was developed that parses, buffers, and resynchronizes the voice data to the packet network. The technique is general, however, and can be applied to any deterministic class of networks, including multi-tier backbones. A conventional single token access protocol was employed at the lowest layer, with fixed packet sizes for voice and variable for data. In addition, the higher layer packet data protocols are allowed to operate independently of those for the voice thereby permitting great flexibility in reconfiguring the network. Voice call setup and switching functions were performed external to the network with PABX equipment.
