Development of a new laser Doppler velocimeter for the Ames High Reynolds Channel No. 2

A new two-channel laser Doppler velocimeter developed for the Ames High Reynolds Channel No. 2 is described. Design features required for the satisfactory operation of the optical system in the channel environment are discussed. Fiber optics are used to transmit the megahertz Doppler signal to the photodetectors located outside the channel pressure vessel, and provision is made to isolate the optical system from pressure and thermal strain effects. Computer-controlled scanning mirrors are used to position the laser beams in the channel flow. Techniques used to seed the flow with 0.5-micron-diam polystyrene spheres avoiding deposition on the test-section windows and porous boundary-layer removal panels are described. Preliminary results are presented with a discussion of several of the factors affecting accuracy.

A Simple Tiltmeter

Bubble vial with external aluminum-foil electrodes is sensing element for simple indicating tiltmeter. To measure bubble displacement, bridge circuit detects difference in capacitance between two sensing electrodes and reference electrode. Tiltmeter was developed for experiment on forecasting seismic events by changes in Earth's magnetic field.

Application of laser velocimetry to an unsteady transonic flow

Measurements of mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and turbulent shear stress have been obtained in an unsteady but periodic flow. Polystyrene spheres, 0.35-0.55 microns in diameter, were injected into the tunnel settling chamber to seed the flow for a laser velocimeter. Synchronized counters together with an encoding interface and digital-to-analog converters were used to record the data on an analog tape recorder. Profiles of velocity and turbulence quantities are presented for several times during the periodic flow.

Diode-quad bridge circuit means

Diode-quad bridge circuit means is described for use as a transducer circuit or as a discriminator circuit. It includes: (1) a diode bridge having first, second, third, and fourth bridge terminals consecutively coupled together by four diodes polarized in circulating relationship; (2) a first impedance connected between the second bridge terminal and a circuit ground; (3) a second impedance connected between the fourth bridge terminal and the circuit ground; (4) a signal source having a first source terminal capacitively coupled to the first and third bridge terminals, and a second source terminal connected to the circuit ground; and (5) an output terminal coupled to the first bridge terminal and at which an output signal may be taken.

Diode-quad bridge circuit means

A transducer and frequency discriminator circuit is described including a four-terminal circulating diode bridge, a first pair of capacitors connected in series across two terminals of the bridge, and a second pair of capacitors, or other impedance elements, connected in series across the other two terminals of the bridge. A source of balanced alternating electrical energy for energizing the circuit is coupled between the commonly connected plates of the first pair of capacitors and the commonly connected plates of the second pair of capacitors. Due to the operation of the diode bridge, the sum of the resultant charges developed on the first pair of capacitors is proportional to the relationship between the respective capacitors of the second pair, and consequently, an output voltage taken across the first pair of capacitors will be proportional to that relationship.

Three-point bridge calibration with one resistor

Method calibrates transducer bridge curing unbalanced condition and line resistance errors are negligible. Series resistance method can be automated easily and controlled by 2-bit information source which provide 4 states for switches.

Diode-quad bridge for reactive transducers and FM discriminators

Diode-quad bridge circuit was developed for use with pressure-sensitive capacitive transducers, liquid-level measuring devices, proximity deflection sensors, and inductive displacement sensors. It may also be used as FM discriminator and as universal impedance bridge.

Heart catheter cable and connector

Ultraminiature catheter cables that are stiff enough for intravenous insertion yet flexible at the tip, sterilizable, and economical are fabricated entirely from commercially available parts. Assembly includes air passageway for reference pressures and coaxial cable for transmission of signals from the tip of catheter.

Catheter transducer and circuit

Simple integrated circuit located at transducer, enables use of single coaxial cable for both input and output connections. Circuit is sensitive to changes in RC time constant, has much improved sensitivity characteristics, and is unaffected by changes in cable capacitance effects.

Telemetry for impact acceleration measurements

Telemetry package uses three separate FM/AM transmitters, one for each axis of measurement. Three AM receivers and a tape recorder are used for receiving, demodulating, and recording the acceleration signal.
