Investigation of laser dynamics, modulation and control by means of intra-cavity time varying perturbation

Projects aimed at the generation of tunable visible, infrared, and ultraviolet light, and on the control of this light by means of novel mode-locking and modulation techniques are discussed. During this period the following projects have been active: (1) studies of transient mode-locking of the Nd:YAG laser and the application of short optical pulses; (2) experimental investigations of the Na-Xe excimer laser system; (3) further development of techniques for vacuum ultraviolet holography; and (4) theoretical and initial experimental studies of a new device which should prove very useful for both infrared up-conversion and generation of tunable UV radiation - a two-photon resonantly pumped frequency converter.

Generation of ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet radiation

The paper describes the use of nonlinear optical techniques for the generation of coherent radiation at ultraviolet, vacuum ultraviolet, and soft X-ray wavelengths. Mixtures of metal vapors and inert gases, and other mixed gas systems, allow generation to regions of the spectrum where nonlinear optical crystals are opaque; and also allow generations at high incident power and energy densities. Progress is reported on programs aimed at efficient conversion from 1.064 microns to 3547 A, and from 3547 A to 1182 A. To date, the shortest wavelength generated by this technique is 887 A. Theoretical considerations indicate that generation into the soft X-ray region should be possible. Using 1182 A radiation, a holographic grating with a fringe spacing of 836 A has been constructed and examined on an electron microscope.

Stimulated emission in multiple-photon-pumped xenon and argon excimers.

A pumping process involving the multiphoton absorption of laser radiation at 3547 and 2660 A is employed in the investigation. Typically, about 25% of the incident pumping radiation is absorbed and effective in producing excimer fluorescence. The four cases studied include 2660-A-pumped argon, 2660-A-pumped xenon, 3547-A-pumped xenon, and 3547-A-pumped argon. Results concerning the on-axis and off-axis fluorescence obtained from the excimers are presented in a graph.

Investigation of laser dynamics, modulation and control by means of intra-cavity time varying perturbation

Work continued on a number of projects aimed at the generation of tunable visible, infrared, and ultraviolet light; and on the control of this light by means of novel mode-locking and modulation techniques. Progress is summarized for the following projects: (1) the transient modelocking of the Nd:YAG laser and application of short optical pulses; (2) studies of the sodium-xenon excimer laser; (3) development of techniques for vacuum ultraviolet holography; and (4) studies of multiple photon pumped xenon and argon excimer lasers.

Acousto-optic filter for electronic laser tuning

Electronically tunable lithium niobate filter utilizes acoustic-optic diffraction for tuning laser to desired frequencies. Filter placed inside laser cavity diffracts incident optical signal of one polarization into orthogonal polarization by collinearly propagating acoustic beam to desired wavelength.

Third-harmonic generation in phase-matched Rb vapor.

The generation of 0.3547-micron radiation was performed by tripling 1.064-micron radiation in a phase-matched mixture of rubidium vapor and xenon. A third-harmonic nonlinear susceptibility in Rb vapor is confirmed. It is about 100,000 times greater than that of He. This large susceptibility is due to the large oscillator strengths and resonant enhancements resulting from Rb transitions in the near infrared, visible, and UV.
