Adapting CLUTCH methodology to multigroup TSUNAMI-3D for eigenvalue sensitivity calculations

The sensitivity of the eigenvalue to uncertainties in nuclear data and its evaluation are important for nuclear criticality safety. TSUNAMI-3D sequences within the SCALE code system offer several options to the user community for calculating eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients with multigroup (MG) and continuous energy (CE) 3D transport capabilities. TSUNAMI-3D sequences implement the adjoint-based perturbation theory with MG KENO code, the Contributon Linked eigenvalue sensitivity/Uncertainty estimation via Track length importance CHaracterization (CLUTCH) method with CE KENO code, and the Iterated Fission Probability (IFP) method with CE KENO and Shift codes. Each method has benefits and limitations depending on the problem that is run. The work presented here aims to adapt the CLUTCH method, which enables the Contributon method's mesh-free, memory-efficient approach for calculating adjoint-weighted tallies for sensitivity calculations, to the MG TSUNAMI-3D sequence. This application would eliminate the explicit adjoint KENO calculation, as well as the memory-consuming mesh flux moment tallies required by the conventional MG TSUNAMI-3D. Smaller memory footprints in the CLUTCH methodology and relatively shorter runtimes in MG KENO transport can make MG TSUNAMI-3D a viable method for some complex problems. Moreover, this adaptation allows MG sensitivity calculations with Shift, ORNL's next-generation high-performance Monte Carlo transport code, which currently does not offer any sensitivity capabilities with MG particle transport simulations. Initial implementation of the new MG TSUNAMI-3D sequence and its preliminary results with a selected critical benchmark experiment in the Verified, Archived Library of Inputs and Data (VALID) are presented in this study.

Joint LLNL, LANL, SNL, and IRSN High Multiplication Subcritical (Multiplicity) Benchmark Integral Experiment Execution (CED-3b Report)

This report documents the experimental configurations and measurements for IER-518: Joint LLNL, LANL, SNL, and IRSN High Multiplication Subcritical (Multiplicity) Benchmark Experiments. These measurements involved a series of subcritical configurations at the Sandia Critical Experiments (SCX) facility at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). The purpose of these measurements was to produce time tagged neutron count data of configurations that exceed a subcritical multiplication of 20, which is the high end of the fundamental physics benchmarks currently available in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project Handbook (ICSBEP). These measurements leverage experimental configurations 1 and detector systems 2 from previously accepted ICSBEP benchmark evaluations, allowing evaluations of these measurements to be performed at greatly reduced cost.

Seven Percent Critical Experiment Core Analysis Approach on Fuel Rods – Core Configurations T155-NoMo, and T155-397Mo.

A series of experiments will be performed to test the integral effects of molybdenum on the reactivity of a critical system. These experiments will use the 7uPCX assembly with the 1.55 cm triangular pitch grid plates. Molybdenum sleeves, consisting of 19.6 inch long 0.5-inch nominal outside diameter molybdenum tubes with 0.031-inch nominal wall thickness and centering hardware, will be placed on some of the fuel rods in the array. The purpose of this analysis is to examine two configurations of the 7uPCX using the 1.55 cm triangular pitch grid plates in fully-reflected approach-to-critical experiments with the number of fuel rods in the array as the approach parameter. This document presents the results of the analysis that was done to allow completion of the 7uPCX Configuration Checklist from Appendix A of SPRF-AP-005 [SNL 2020] for the cores noted above. The checklists for these cores are shown in Appendix A.

IER-523: Feasibility of Experiments Focused on Measuring the Effects of UO 2 BeO Material on Critical Configurations using 7uPCX [Slides]

Sandia National Labs has access to unused ACRR fuel, which is unique in its enrichment 35% and material composition BeO. ACRR fuel is available in quantities well above what is needed for experiments. Two experiment concepts have been investigated: UO 2 BeO fuel elements and pellets with 7uPCX fuel. The worth of UO 2 BeO is large enough to be well above the anticipated experiment uncertainties.

Temperature Dependent Experiments using SPRF/CX [Slides]

A range of fuel arrays has been examined for both fuel types and representative arrays were selected. Temperature dependent calculations were performed to show the performance of the arrays. Modification to the SPRF/CX facility has been proposed to aid SNL staff in the execution of temperature dependent experiments.
