The 1998 Outburst of XTE J1550-564: A Model Based on Multi-Wavelength Observations

The 1998 September outburst of the X-ray binary XTE J1550-564 was monitored at X-ray, optical and radio wavelengths. We divide the outburst sequence into five phases and discuss their multi-wavelength properties. The outburst starts with a hard X-ray spike, while the soft X-ray flux rises with a longer timescale. We suggest that the onset of the outburst is determined by an increased mass transfer rate from the companion star, but the outburst morphology is determined by the distribution of specific angular momentum in the accreting matter. The companion in XTE J1550-564 is likely an active magnetic star, with a surface field strong enough to influence the dynamics of mass transfer. We suggest that its magnetic field can create a magnetic bag capable of confining gas inside the Roche lobe of the primary. The impulsive rise in the hard X-rays is explained by the inflow of material with low angular momentum onto the black hole, on a free-fall timescale, when the magnetic confinement breaks down. At the same time, high angular momentum matter, transferred via ordinary Roche-lobe overflow, is responsible for the formation of a disk.

HCO(+) ionization from SGR1806-20

The region surrounding the soft gamma ray repeater SGR 1806-20 in the HCO(+) (J = 1-0) transition was observed. Previous observations of compact Galactic objects suggest that a link exists between these objects and molecular clouds in which they are possibly embedded. Such a link would help explain some of the phenomena observed from these objects. A measure of the ionization rate as a function of distance from the source implies that the cloud is associated with the source. The abundance of HCO(+), which varies with increasing or decreasing ionization rates, is considered to be an ideal tool for this measurement. The observations acquired in the direction of the nebula surrounding SGR 1806-20 are presented, and the resulting 7 x 12 arcmin map derived from the HCO(+) data is shown.

Coordinated Ginga, IUE, and VLA observations of stellar activity in Sigma(2) Coronae Borealis

Observations of the active cool star binary system Sigma(2) Corona Borealis with the Large Area Counters on the Ginga X-ray satellite over 2.5 d, or about two orbital periods, are reported. Throughout the observations, Sigma(2) CrB exhibited X-ray variability on time scales ranging from tens of minutes to hours. The X-ray light curve shows evidence of flaring during the course of the observations. The summed X-ray pulse height spectrum from flaring events compared with similar spectra from quiescent periods indicates an increase in coronal temperature. Periodogram analysis of the entire X-ray light curve shows a possible periodicity at about 0.40-0.44 d, with no strong signal at the orbital period or 1/2 of the orbital period. Coordinated multiwavelength observations of IUE and the VLA indicate both UV and microwave flaring during one X-ray outburst. The quiescent microwave spectrum is not consistent with a thermal gyrosynchrotron process; nonthermal gyrosynchrotron radiation is argued to be the most likely emission process.
