Manufacturing and producibility technology

Activities of the manufacturing/producibility working group within the Advanced High-Pressure O2/H2 Technology Program are summarized. The objectives of the M/P working group are: to develop and evaluate process and manufacturing techniques for advanced propulsion hardware design and selected materials; and to optimize the producibility of (SSME) components and assemblies by improved performance, increased life, greater reliability, and/or reduced cost. The technologies being developed include: plasma arc, laser, and inertia welding; combustion chamber and turbine blade coatings; coating processes; high performance alloy electroforming; and process control technology.

High speed machining of space shuttle external tank liquid hydrogen barrel panel

Actual and projected optimum High Speed Machining data for producing shuttle external tank liquid hydrogen barrel panels of aluminum alloy 2219-T87 are reported. The data included various machining parameters; e.g., spindle speeds, cutting speed, table feed, chip load, metal removal rate, horsepower, cutting efficiency, cutter wear (lack of) and chip removal methods.

Final report on development of a programable controller

Microprocessor-based controller for solar-heating and cooling systems is described in report. Analog data from flow sensors, temperature sensors, and other devices are accepted by programable controller. It also receives digital input from relays and switches. Report describes background of development program. It also summarizes operation, performance, and applications of controller.

Thermosyphon heat exchanger

Report summarizes final development, testing, and certification of pumpless, liquid-to-air heat exchanger for solar heating. System requires blower but no pump in water loop. Output is 35,000 Btu/hr when water temperature is 49 C.

Hankins, J. D.

Controller for solar-energy systems

Report describes operation and testing of computerized control unit for solar-heating and cooling systems. Unit includes electronics and 'plumbing'. Components are modular. Microprocessor with ROM and RAM operates fans, pumps, and valves, and retains selected data for 32 hours.

Hankins, J. D.

Controller and temperature monitor for solar heating

Report describes development and certification of 77-171 differential thermostat for controlling solar-heating and cooling systems and 77-180 temperature monitor of indoor, outdoor, and storage temperatures. Units are commercially available.

Relative stiffness of flat-conductor cable

Bending moment data were taken on ten different cable samples and normalized to express all stiffness factors in terms of cable 5.1 cm in width. Relative stiffness data and nominal physical characteristics are tabulated and presented in graphical form for designers who may be interested in finding torques exerted on critical components by short lengths of cable.

A passive thermosyphon heat exchanger for residential solar installations

The paper details the development of a thermosyphon water-to-air heat exchanger for residential solar applications. Modeling techniques used in the analysis of thermosyphon performance are included, as well as test results from laboratory-scale experiments. In addition, a description of the initial full-scale prototype is presented, along with experimental test results. Present areas of development are discussed, with an economic comparison of thermosyphon and forced convection heating systems also being included.

Surface mounted flat-conductor cable

Report presents drawbacks and advantages of FCC for home wiring. Two types of surface-wiring schemes are considered: snap-on baseboard and extendable baseboard. Both types lower installation cost and time.

Hankins, J. D.

Temperature rise of installed FCC

Report discusses temperature profiles of installed FCC for wood and tile surfaces. Three-conductor FCC was tested at twice nominal current-carrying capacity over bare floor and under carpet, with result indicating that temperature rise is not a linear function of current with FCC at this level.

Hankins, J. D.

Flat-conductor cable baseboard

Report presents procedures and results of test of FCC baseboard system developed for use in commerical and residential applications. Mechanical, electrical, chemical, environmental, thermal, and analytical tests subjected system to conditions of greater severity than would be encountered in normal service; system withstood tests favorably.

Relative stiffness of flat conductor cables

The measurement of the bending moment required to obtain a given deflection in short lengths of flat conductor cable (FCC) is presented in this report. Experimental data were taken on 10 different samples of FCC and normalized to express all bending moments (relative stiffness factor) in terms of a cable 5.1 cm (2.0 in.) in width. Data are presented in tabular and graphical form for the covenience of designers who may be interested in finding torques exerted on critical components by short lengths of FCC.

Surface-mounted flat conductor cable for home wiring

The concepts are discussed which are being considered and developed for surface-mounted wiring using flat conductor cable. Safety aspects, problems being encountered, and advantages are also discussed.
