Conceptual design and performance predictions for 2D beam emission spectroscopy turbulence measurements at Wendelstein 7-X

A conceptual design for a 2D beam emission spectroscopy diagnostic system to measure ion gyro-scale plasma turbulence at Wendeslstein 7-X is described. The conceptual design identifies field-aligned viewing geometries and ports for cross-field turbulence measurements in the neutral beam volume. A 2D sightline grid covers the outer plasma region, and the grid configuration provides sufficient k-space coverage in radial and poloidal directions for ion temperature gradient and trapped-electron mode turbulence measurements. Emission intensity estimates, optical transmission losses, and detector noise levels indicate that the measurements will be sensitive to plasma density fluctuations as small as δn/n ≈ 0.5% with a bandwidth of 1 MHz. Implementation challenges include a small beam emission Doppler shift due to nearly radial heating beams and reduced optical throughput due to collection aperture limitations.

Giant topological longitudinal circular photo-galvanic effect in the chiral multifold semimetal CoSi

The absence of mirror symmetry, or chirality, is behind striking natural phenomena found in systems as diverse as DNA and crystalline solids. A remarkable example occurs when chiral semimetals with topologically protected band degeneracies are illuminated with circularly polarized light. Under the right conditions, the part of the generated photocurrent that switches sign upon reversal of the light’s polarization, known as the circular photo-galvanic effect, is predicted to depend only on fundamental constants. The conditions to observe quantization are non-universal, and depend on material parameters and the incident frequency. In this work, we perform terahertz emission spectroscopy with tunable photon energy from 0.2 –1.1 eV in the chiral topological semimetal CoSi. We identify a large longitudinal photocurrent peaked at 0.4 eV reaching ~550 μ A/V 2 , which is much larger than the photocurrent in any chiral crystal reported in the literature. Using first-principles calculations we establish that the peak originates only from topological band crossings, reaching 3.3 ± 0.3 in units of the quantization constant. Our calculations indicate that the quantized circular photo-galvanic effect is within reach in CoSi upon doping and increase of the hot-carrier lifetime. The large photo-conductivity suggests that topological semimetals could potentially be used as novel mid-infrared detectors.

A Hybrid Lagrangian/Eulerian Collocated Velocity Advection and Projection Method for Fluid Simulation

Abstract We present a hybrid particle/grid approach for simulating incompressible fluids on collocated velocity grids. Our approach supports both particle‐based Lagrangian advection in very detailed regions of the flow and efficient Eulerian grid‐based advection in other regions of the flow. A novel Backward Semi‐Lagrangian method is derived to improve accuracy of grid based advection. Our approach utilizes the implicit formula associated with solutions of the inviscid Burgers’ equation. We solve this equation using Newton's method enabled by C 1 continuous grid interpolation. We enforce incompressibility over collocated, rather than staggered grids. Our projection technique is variational and designed for B‐spline interpolation over regular grids where multiquadratic interpolation is used for velocity and multilinear interpolation for pressure. Despite our use of regular grids, we extend the variational technique to allow for cut‐cell definition of irregular flow domains for both Dirichlet and free surface boundary conditions.
