Topology-empowered membrane devices for terahertz photonics

Control of terahertz waves offers a profound platform for next-generation sensing, imaging, and information communications. However, all conventional terahertz components and systems suffer from bulky design, sensitivity to imperfections, and transmission loss. We propose and experimentally demonstrate on-chip integration and miniaturization of topological devices, which may address many existing drawbacks of the terahertz technology. We design and fabricate topological devices based on valley-Hall photonic structures that can be employed for various integrated components of on-chip terahertz systems. We demonstrate valley-locked asymmetric energy flow and mode conversion with topological waveguide, multiport couplers, wave division, and whispering gallery mode resonators. Our devices are based on topological membrane metasurfaces, which are of great importance for developing on-chip photonics and bring many features into terahertz technology.

Terahertz bound state in the continuum in dielectric membrane metasurfaces

Mie-resonant metasurfaces composed of subwavelength dielectric resonators enable an efficient route for electromagnetic wave manipulation. Among these manipulations, a localized mode with a high-quality factor coexisting with a continuous spectrum of radiating waves termed bound state in the continuum (BIC) can arouse many exotic applications in photonics. Here, we demonstrate the terahertz BIC in a dielectric membrane metasurface and analyze its resonant nature based on Mie-resonant multipoles and vector spherical harmonics. The intrinsic splitting of the resonances under oblique incidence is also explored, in which the conversion of multipole radiation patterns versus the oblique angle will drive the resonances from BIC to leaky modes or vice versa. Both Γ and off-Γ point BICs could be identified as the superposition cancellation of vector spherical harmonics for both p-wave and s-wave. Our research not only provides a novel perspective for exploring the essence of BIC metasurfaces in the terahertz regime, but also points new opportunities for achieving terahertz BIC metasurfaces with ultra-high quality factors.

Re-entrance to a ferromagnetic insulator with oxygen-vacancy ordering in the La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattice

The charge-density wave is correlated with the properties in transition metal oxides, and regulating this state is important to explore the potential of oxides. Defects could modulate the local environment, in which the effect is subject to the concentration and arrangement, and an artificial arrangement of defect-ordering is highly expected to design the material properties. In this work, the ordering of oxygen vacancies with a preferred location on the (001) La/SrO plane by self-structural optimization was induced in La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattices with medium oxygen pressure during SrTiO 3 deposition, and then the ferromagnetic charge-ordering (CO)/charge-density-wave (CDW) state was formed in La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 with susceptibility to magnetic field, temperature, and superlattice configuration. In addition, re-entrance to the ferromagnetic insulator CO/CDW could be induced by a high magnetic field. The selective occupancy of oxygen vacancies on the (001) La/SrO plane and the phase fluctuation around the CO/CDW-to-ferromagnetic metal phase transition were critical to the above properties. The interfacial diffusion with atomic-level resolution to control oxygen vacancies could be used in other magnetoelectric systems and corresponding device applications.
