Surface Vacancy Engineering Re-Routes First-Cycle Redox for Stabilized Li-Rich Layered Cathodes

We demonstrate that atomic-scale surface disorder can control the first-cycle redox sequence of Li-rich layered oxides, eliminating the detrimental process of oxygen release and lattice collapse that degrades performance. In Li1.14Ni0.32Mn0.54O2 (LNMO), a simple chemical treatment introduces oxygen and transition metal (TM) vacancies confined to the particle surface while preserving the bulk layered framework. Multi-modal synchrotron analyses reveal that these vacancies trigger an early oxygen oxidation below 4.4 V, delay nickel oxidation to higher potential, and suppress the formation of covalent Ni4+─O states. This modified pathway prevents irreversible oxygen release, suppresses manganese dissolution, and maintains metal-oxygen coordination at high voltages. Consequently, the treated cathode delivers higher first-cycle Coulombic efficiency (CE), mitigated voltage fade, and superior capacity retention. By directly linking engineered surface disorder to redox reactions and associated structural transformations, this work establishes a general design principle for durable, high-energy-density cathodes.

Boosting the interfacial superionic conduction of halide solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries

Designing highly conductive and (electro)chemical stable inorganic solid electrolytes using cost-effective materials is crucial for developing all-solid-state batteries. Here, we report halide nanocomposite solid electrolytes (HNSEs) ZrO 2 (-ACl)-A 2 ZrCl 6 (A = Li or Na) that demonstrate improved ionic conductivities at 30 °C, from 0.40 to 1.3 mS cm -1 and from 0.011 to 0.11 mS cm -1 for Li + and Na + , respectively, compared to A 2 ZrCl 6 , and improved compatibility with sulfide solid electrolytes. The mechanochemical method employing Li 2 O for the HNSEs synthesis enables the formation of nanostructured networks that promote interfacial superionic conduction. Via density functional theory calculations combined with synchrotron X-ray and 6 Li nuclear magnetic resonance measurements and analyses, we demonstrate that interfacial oxygen-substituted compounds are responsible for the boosted interfacial conduction mechanism. Compared to state-of-the-art Li 2 ZrCl 6 , the fluorinated ZrO 2 -2Li 2 ZrCl 5 F HNSE shows improved high-voltage stability and interfacial compatibility with Li 6 PS 5 Cl and layered lithium transition metal oxide-based positive electrodes without detrimentally affecting Li + conductivity. We also report the assembly and testing of a Li-In||LiNi 0.88 Co 0.11 Mn 0.01 O 2 all-solid-state lab-scale cell operating at 30 °C and 70 MPa and capable of delivering a specific discharge of 115 mAh g -1 after almost 2000 cycles at 400 mA g -1 .

Structural mapping and tuning of mixed halide ions in amorphous sulfides for fast Li-ion conduction and high deformability

Amorphous sulfides are among the most promising candidates for solid electrolytes (SEs) owing to their excellent deformability and acceptable Li-ion conductivity (σion) at room temperature. However, the complex atomic structure of these amorphous materials without long-range ordering results in a lack of structural understanding and difficulties in tuning material properties. Here, in this study, we performed structural mapping of glassy sulfide SEs composed of various anion clusters using a combinatorial atomic level analysis of synchrotron X-ray-based pair distribution function (PDF) and reverse Monte-Carlo (RMC) methods, demonstrating the potential to tune σ ion in glass SEs. First, we prepared a new glassy sulfide with a mixed anion framework of two halogens (Br and I) as atomic anions, with PS 4 3- molecular anions in a Li 2 S–P 2 S 5 -based glass SE. At a specific Br content, [(Li 2 S) 0.658 (LiI 0.9 LiBr 0.1 ) 0.342 ] 0.825 [P 2 S 5 ] 0.175 recorded a σ ion of 2.27 mS cm -1 , the highest value for any glass sulfides reported to date; however, its elastic modulus was still suppressed to 14.48 GPa. PDF and RMC calculations successfully provided structural mapping of anion clusters, including two halogens. Molecular dynamics simulations of each composition confirmed that flexible coordination caused by the rattling of small polarizable Br ions in the mixed halogens of glassy SEs contributed to the superior σ ion . Our results may provide new insights into the design of superior glassy SEs that play key roles in all-solid-state batteries requiring fast Li-ion conduction and high deformability.
