Parametric instabilities of circularly polarized Alfven waves in high-beta plasmas

CGL relations including the effect of finite ion Larmor radius are used to consider a class of parametric instabilities of finite-amplitude, circularly polarized Alfven waves in high-beta plasmas. The disperison relation governing the instabilities is a sixth-order polynomial which is solved numerically. There are two types of instabilities: a modulational instability at k is less than k(0) and a relatively weak and narrow bandwidth instability at k is less than approximately k(0), where k and k(0) are the wavenumbers of the unstable density fluctuation and the 'pump' wave, respectively. It is shown that these instabilities can occur for left-handed pump waves and that the modulational instability is unstable over a very broad band in k with a maximum growth rate at finite k is not equal to 0.

Parametric instabilities of finite-amplitude, circularly polarized Alfven waves in an anisotropic plasma

A class of parametric instabilities of finite-amplitude, circularly polarized Alfven waves in a plasma with pressure anisotropy is studied by application of the CGL equations. A linear perturbation analysis is used to find the dispersion relation governing the instabilities, which is a fifth-order polynomial and is solved numerically. A large-amplitude, circularly polarized wave is unstable with respect to decay into three waves: one sound-like wave and two side-band Alfven-like waves. It is found that, in addition to the decay instability, two new instabilities that are absent in the framework of the MHD equations can occur, depending on the plasma parameters.

Parametric Instabilities Of Alfven Waves

Report presents theoretical study of parametric instabilities of finite-amplitude, circularly-polarized Alfven waves in plasma having pressure anisotropy. Waves studied are observed in solar wind and conjectured to exist in interstellar and other cosmic plasmas.

The effect of random Alfven waves on the propagation of hydromagnetic waves in a finite-beta plasma

Using first-order smoothing theory, Fourier analysis and perturbation methods, the evolution equation of the wave spectrum as well as the nonlinear forces generated by random Alfven waves in a finite-beta plasma with phenomenological Landau-damping effects are obtained. The effect of microscale random Alfven waves on the propagation of large-scale hydromagnetic waves is also investigated by solving the mean-field equations. It is shown that parallel-propagating random Alfven waves are modulationally stable and that obliquely propagating random Alfven waves can be modulationally unstable when the energy of random waves is converted to slow magnetoacoustic waves that can be Landau-damped, providing a dissipation mechanism for the Alfven waves.

The effect of lower-hybrid waves on the propagation of hydromagnetic waves

The two-fluid plasma equations are used to model the interaction of hydromagnetic waves (HMWs) in a magnetic plasma with lower-hybrid waves (LHWs) propagating perpendicular to the magnetic field. The derivation of the governing equations is given in detail, and numerical results are presented in extensive graphs. It is shown that, when the angle between the HMW and LHW propagation directions is small, the HMWs can be excited, with the energy propagating nearly parallel to the LHW direction. The implications of these findings for the geomagnetic tail are briefly discussed.

The alpha-effect generated by standing Alfven waves

The mean electromotive force generated by nonlinear standing Alfven waves propagating along the mean magnetic field is investigated. It is shown that the alpha-effect can exist owing to the interaction between oppositely propagating two waves, provided that the initial fields have nonzero helicity. The result is discussed in the context of field-aligned currents and periodic particle flux variations in the earth's magnetosphere.
