The Wasilewski sample of emission-line galaxies - Follow-up CCD imaging and spectroscopic and IRAS observations

The results of an extensive imaging and spectroscopic follow-up of the objective prism-selected emission line galaxy (ELG) sample of Wasilewski (1982) are presented. Fluxes at 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns were also obtained from the coadded IRAS survey data. ELGs found by objective prism surveys are found to be generally small and underluminous galaxies which usually have higher than average optical surface brightness. The Seyfert detection rate in objective prism surveys is roughly 10 percent and the ratio of the space densities of Seyfert 2 to Seyfert 1 galaxies is significantly larger than unity. Most of the galaxies selected by objective prism surveys are star-forming, late-type spirals which often show disturbed morphology. About 25 percent of the galaxies detected by the surveys are faint, high-excitation metal-poor compact H II regions.

Kinematic evidence for a relativistic Keplerian disk - Arp 102B

Line profiles were calculated for a Keplerian disk with allowance made for relativistic effects. Excellent agreement was found between the resulting double peaked asymmetric profiles and the H-alpha line of Arp 102B; this yielded an accurate determination of several disk parameters. It is believed that the line profile of Arp 102B shows the most convincing direct kinematic evidence for rotation in any AGN.

Ultraviolet observations of selected astronomical sources

The results of the 9th and 10th IUE episode programs listed are summarized. Observations and basic data reductions were completed for 4 extragalactic programs which were allocated a total of 9 US1 shifts, and 2 stellar investigations which used 10 US2 shifts. Use was made of the Goddard RDAF to obtain better signal to noise ratio spectra using the Gaussian extraction routines. Highlights include the first IUE observations of H1821+643, the second brightest quasar in the sky, and the discovery of accretion disk emission line profiles in the elliptical Seyfert galaxy Arp 102B. Both of these observations were accompanied by nearly simultaneous optical spectrophotometry. As a result of the stellar programs, large amplitude variability associated with the rotation period of the Ap stars 78 Vir and 53 Cam was found.

Variable spectra of active galaxies

The analysis of EXOSAT spectra of active galaxies are presented. The objects examined for X-ray spectral variability were MR 2251-178 and 3C 120. The results of these investigations are described, as well as additional results on X-ray spectral variability related to EXOSAT observations of active galaxies. Additionally, the dipping X-ray source 4U1624-49 was also investigated.
