Free Space Optics - Transportable Test Platform

The study examines potential approaches and benefits to government space agencies and industry regarding the development and testing of free space optics (FSO) satellite communication systems should government space agencies launch optical satellite payloads and/or develop a transportable test platform with which industry provided optical ground systems (OGSs) could interface. The study examines atmospheric and environmental effects on FSO networks, as well as the multitude of mitigation techniques available to compensate for those effects. Research suggests that there are a multitude of potential techniques that could be implemented to mitigate the adverse effects of atmospheric/environmental conditions, and to optimize the effectiveness of FSO networks. Testing and selection of this broad array of techniques is a prerequisite to making FSO space segment systems and OGSs interoperable. The study discusses testing that is required to define FSO standards. The establishment of interoperable standards is complicated by the existence of a multitude of potential schemes/specifications to address each mitigation/optimization challenge; very little is yet standardized. Standardization is further complicated by the fact that the selection of a design approach which benefits one consideration often disadvantages another consideration. Each mitigation techniques must be evaluated as an element of the complete system to gain an accurate understanding of its effects on system efficacy.

SCaN Transportable Communication Platform (STCP)

NASA Glenn Research Center required a satellite communication trailer that served dual purposes; 24/7 Emergency Communication Services (ECS) in the event of a natural or manmade disaster that disrupted conventional communications, and a Ka Band NASA TDRS capability providing a research capability for over the air evaluations/characterizations. The trailer was to be field deployable, environmentally controlled and self-contained providing local area networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WAN's) with user access both wired (Ethernet) and wireless (802.11) supporting VoIP, Internet Web access and Email. The TDRSS terminal included a 200W TWT amplifier mounted on the feed boom, individual up and down converters, and custom integrated waveguide and a supporting feed system. Other features such as a mast, generator, electrical, lighting, surveillance, and storage capabilities were also required. The Trailer was developed and demonstrated these original requested capabilities. New Requirements are defined and the trailer is now being evolved and upgraded to be a backup for the Near- Earth Network (NEN) Stations at KSC that will support the launch phase of EM-1. This paper presents the current and future capabilities of the trailer and additional options that will make it a valuable deployable asset to support remote operations from any launch from location.

Two-Dimensional Thermal Boundary Layer Corrections for Convective Heat Flux Gauges

This work presents a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) study of two-dimensional thermal boundary layer correction factors for convective heat flux gauges mounted in flat plate subjected to a surface temperature discontinuity with variable properties taken into account. A two-equation k - omega turbulence model is considered. Results are obtained for a wide range of Mach numbers (1 to 5), gauge radius ratio, and wall temperature discontinuity. Comparisons are made for correction factors with constant properties and variable properties. It is shown that the variable-property effects on the heat flux correction factors become significant

Design, Fabrication and Evaluation of Deep Submicron FETs

GaAs FET's with gatelengths on a nanometer scale have been designed, fabricated and evaluated in order to investigate the limits of conventional GaAs scaling rules. An optimum layer structure for deep submicron GaAs MESFET's was designed, and a fabrication process that minimizes the effects of extrinsic parasitics was developed. The fabricated FET's were measured and evaluated at DC and at RF frequencies. 0.1 micron and 50 nm gatelength GaAs MESFET's with 2x45 micron wide "T"-shaped gates were fabricated so that a wide range of saturation current was achieved. For the 0.1 micron gatelength FET's, peak g(sub m,ext) varies from 611 mS/mm to 795 mS/mm with an average value of 717 mS/mm, peak f(sub t) varies from 90 GHz to 103 GHz with an average value of 96 GHz, and peak f(sub max) varies from 147 GHz to 172 GHz with an average value of 161 GHz. In comparison, the peak g(sub m,ext) of the 50 nm gatelength FET's is reduced by almost 20%, the peak f(sub t) is increased by 30%, and the peak f(sub max) is about the same as for the 0.1 micron gatelength FET's. The f(sub t) of the 50 nm gatelength FET's is higher than the f(sub t) of the 0.1 micron gatelength FET's because of the reduced gate-source capacitance (C(sub gs)). The peak f(sub max) does not show a similar improvement because of the onset of short channel effects.

International Symposium on Space Terahertz Technology, 1st, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mar. 5, 6, 1990, Proceedings

Problems, proposed solutions, and recent results related to the development of solid-state oscillators, detectors, mixers, diode multipliers, and antennas at THz frequencies are addressed. Individual topics considered include: submillimeter heterodyne remote sensing of upper atmospheric gases, planar dipole array antenna with an elliptical lens, twin slot antenna structures integrated with microbolometer detectors for 94-GHz imaging. Also discussed are: quantum-well and quantum-barrier diodes for generating submillimeter wave power, planar Schottky barrier mixer diodes for space applications at submillimeter wavelengths, GaAs Schottky barrier varactor diodes for submillimeter wavelength power generation, planar doped barrier devices for subharmonic mixers.
