STROZ Lidar Results at the MOHAVE III Campaign, October, 2009, Table Mountain, CA

During October, 2009 the GSFC STROZ Lidar participated in a campaign at the JPL Table Mountain Facility (Wrightwood, CA, 2285 m Elevation) to measure vertical profiles of water vapor from near the ground to the lower stratosphere. On eleven nights, water vapor, aerosol, temperature and ozone profiles were measured by the STROZ lidar, two other similar lidars, frost-point hygrometer sondes, and ground-based microwave instruments made measurements. Results from these measurements and an evaluation of the performance of the STROZ lidar during the campaign will be presented in this paper. The STROZ lidar was able to measure water vapor up to 13-14 km ASL during the campaign. We will present results from all the STROZ data products and comparisons with other instruments made. Implications for instrumental changes will be discussed.

Optimal strategies in the neighborhood of a collision course

We consider a simple differential game between pursuer P and evader E in the neighborhood of a nominal collision course. The payoff is the terminal lateral miss-distance. The control of each player is his acceleration normal to his velocity vector, and both players' controls are bounded. Saddlepoint strategies are deduced for three combinations of the acceleration bounds and are shown to be related to the sign of the derivative of the orientation of the line of sight (L.O.S.).

Uncertain dynamical systems: A differential game approach

A class of dynamical systems in a conflict situation is formulated and discussed, and the formulation is applied to the study of an important class of systems in the presence of uncertainty. The uncertainty is deterministic and the only assumption is that its value belongs to a known compact set. Asymptotic stability is fully discussed with application to variable structure and model reference control systems.

Stabilizing feedback control for dynamical systems with bounded uncertainty

The theories of differential games and generalized dynamic systems are used to deduce stabilizing controllers for quasi-linear systems. Attention is given to a class of dynamic systems subject to parameter and input uncertainty whose values range in a given compact set. Using a worst case design philosophy, a feedback control is derived that assures uniform asymptotic (Liapunov) stability of the origin under all admissible uncertainties.

On the time-weighted quadratic sum of linear discrete systems

A method is proposed for obtaining the time-weighted quadratic sum for linear discrete systems. The formula of the weighted quadratic sum is obtained from matrix z-transform formulation. In addition, it is shown that this quadratic sum can be derived in a recursive form for several useful weighted functions. The discussion presented parallels that of MacFarlane (1963) for weighted quadratic integral for linear continuous systems.
