Implementation of Advanced Grid Support Functionalities by Smart Operation of Residential Loads with low Cost Converter Interface

This paper investigates a grid-supportive load concept for small-scale residential appliances, focusing on a residential refrigerator. Power consumption is adjusted based on grid conditions to achieve IEEE-1547 grid support functions. Two key aspects are presented: a low-cost refrigerator converter with Lyapunov energy function-based local controllers for speed control, and the impact on a standard microgrid system, demonstrating advanced grid support from the load side. This method enhances grid resilience and reliability and can be extended to other residential loads. The study contributes to efficient and robust grid-supportive load management systems, showing promising performance. This approach has the potential to improve overall grid stability and can be adapted for various types of residential appliances. The modeling and simulations in MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed solution. Future work will explore real-world implementation and scalability of this concept for broader applications.

Experimentation in Exploring Photovoltaic Inverter Dynamics Under Different Irradiance Levels Through a Data-Driven Approach

As conventional direct connections of synchronous generators are being phased out, inverter-based resources (IBRs) with grid support functions are increasingly being integrated into power systems. This transition requires the development of accurate dynamic models for IBRs to predict how power systems will adapt to varying levels of IBRs penetration, establish grid code requirements, and ensure compliance. Here, this study introduces an active probing signal-based data-driven modeling technique to accurately derive the dynamics model of a smart photovoltaic inverter operating in Volt-Watt and Freq-Watt modes, in compliance with the IEEE 1547–2018 standard. The paper focuses on investigating how the dynamics of the PV inverter model respond to fluctuations in solar irradiance, utilizing real-time digital simulator experimentation. The experimental analysis demonstrates that the amplitude of dynamics fluctuates with changes in irradiance across both operational modes and confirms the active power’s dependence on irradiance levels. Furthermore, the nature of inverter dynamics varies distinctly between the different modes of activation. Critically, our findings indicate that dynamic models require DC-gain adjustments to accommodate contrasting irradiance levels, highlighting a negative gradient linear relationship between the DC-gain of each model and the irradiance.

Autonomous Grid Support Functionality in Variable-Speed Drive-Based End-Use Loads

High penetration of inverter-based resources into power systems causes lower inertia, and it becomes more challenging to maintain grid stability during contingency events. While conventional demand response and shedding at the load side suffer from slow response, impact by unavailability, and issues from communication, variable-speed drives (VSDs) are becoming strong candidates for fast frequency response (FFR) thanks to their fast response and reduced user impact from variable power adjustment capability. In this letter, we propose an autonomous frequency support control method for a residential refrigerator with a VSD, a promising target small end-use load for FFR. We analyze the effect of the proposed controller on grid stability, and we verify the performance through laboratory experiments with a commercially available refrigerator.
