Entropy-Assisted Quality Pattern Identification in Finance

Short-term patterns in financial time series form the cornerstone of many algorithmic trading strategies, yet extracting these patterns reliably from noisy market data remains a formidable challenge. In this paper, we propose an entropy-assisted framework for identifying high-quality, non-overlapping patterns that exhibit consistent behavior over time. We ground our approach in the premise that historical patterns, when accurately clustered and pruned, can yield substantial predictive power for short-term price movements. To achieve this, we incorporate an entropy-based measure as a proxy for information gain: patterns that lead to high one-sided movements in historical data yet retain low local entropy are more “informative” in signaling future market direction. Compared to conventional clustering techniques such as K-means and Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs), which often yield biased or unbalanced groupings, our approach emphasizes balance over a forced visual boundary, ensuring that quality patterns are not lost due to over-segmentation. By emphasizing both predictive purity (low local entropy) and historical profitability, our method achieves a balanced representation of Buy and Sell patterns, making it better suited for short-term algorithmic trading strategies. This paper offers an in-depth illustration of our entropy-assisted framework through two case studies on Gold vs. USD and GBPUSD. While these examples demonstrate the method’s potential for extracting high-quality patterns, they do not constitute an exhaustive survey of all possible asset classes.

Demonstrating non-isothermal vacuum membrane air dehumidification for efficient next-generation air conditioning

Vacuum membrane air dehumidification has gained significant interest in recent years as a highly efficient means of air dehumidification. Prior theoretical modeling work by the authors introduced the Active Membrane Energy Exchanger (AMX) concept, which combines active heat exchange and vacuum membrane dehumidification into one non-isothermal system, and found that it could outperform other air conditioning technologies under many conditions. However, no experimental literature exists on combining active heat exchangers and vacuum membrane dehumidification. Here, the goal of the present study is to evaluate the dehumidification (mass transfer) performance of the AMX concept relative to isothermal membrane dehumidification through three main methodologies: (1) membrane material-level characterization, (2) experimental prototype development and testing, and (3) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The dense membranes used in this work showed up to a 40% increase in water vapor permeance at cooler temperatures, and the prototype system showed up to a 6% increase in humidity removal when the air was simultaneously cooled. Furthermore, the membrane module-integrated heat exchange tubes provided additional mixing and turbulence, leading to a 4–8% increase in humidity removal. The upper limit coefficient of performance was equal to approximately 2.2, necessitating advanced system designs to improve efficiency. This study is the first to highlight that combining the cooling and vacuum dehumidification processes can improve dehumidification performance.

Vehicle Cybersecurity Threats and Mitigation Approaches

Federal fleet managers and the information technology teams working with them need to understand the threats associated with modern vehicles. As vehicles become safer overall, the dangers change from distracted drivers to privacy intrusion and compromised operation. While fleet managers cannot necessarily change the configurations of manufacturer settings in mass market vehicles, they can influence what protective measures are taken in supplemental equipment or pilot-project vehicles. This report identifies security concerns, mitigation techniques, and procurement language that may be applicable in certain cases.
