Protective coatings for lithium metal electrodes

Double-layered protective coatings for lithium metal electrodes, as well as methods of formation relating thereto, are provided. The negative electrode assembly includes an electroactive material layer including lithium metal and a protective dual-layered coating. The protective dual-layered coating includes a polymeric layer disposed on a surface of the electroactive material layer and an inorganic layer disposed on an exposed surface of the polymeric layer. The polymeric layer has an elastic modulus of greater than or equal to about 0.01 GPa to less than or equal to about 410 GPa. The inorganic layer has an elastic modulus of greater than or equal to about 10 GPa to less than or equal to about 1000 GPa.

The role of mab‐3 in spermatogenesis and ontogenesis of pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus

Abstract Background Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is one of the most destructive invasive species, causing extensive economic losses worldwide. The sex ratio of female to male of B. xylophilus plays an important role in the nematode infestation. However, little is known about the processes of its sex determination. The double sex/mab‐3‐related family of transcription factors are highly conserved in animals, playing crucial roles in sex determination, spermatogenesis and ontogenesis. We therefore investigated its orthologue, Bxy‐mab‐3 , in B. xylophilus . Results Bxy‐mab‐3 has two typical conserved DNA‐binding domains. It was observed in J2 (the second‐stage of juveniles), J3, J4 and male adults (specifically on the spicules), but not in eggs or female adults via mRNA in situ hybridization. RNA‐Seq indicated significantly higher expression in males. RNAi showed that the body size and sperm size of male adults were markedly smaller than those of the controls. Meanwhile, almost all the RNAi‐treated males failed to mate with the normal females, even 26.34% of interfered males did not produce sperm. However, RNAi of Bxy‐mab‐3 had no effect on the sex ratio of B. xylophilus . Conclusion Bxy‐mab‐3 is indispensable for spermatogenesis, ontogenesis and mating behavior. It is a typical sex‐determination gene with differential expression in males and females. However, knocking down Bxy‐mab‐3 expression could not alter the sex ratio as seen in other species. Our findings contribute towards a better understanding of the molecular events of Bxy‐mab‐3 in B. xylophilus , which provides promising hints for control of pine wilt disease by blocking ontogenesis and decreasing nematode fecundity.

Concentration dependent properties and plastic deformation facilitate instability of the solid-electrolyte interphase in Li-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) often suffer from capacity fading and poor cyclic performance due to mechanical degradation of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). Here we perform numerical simulations and theoretical analysis to elucidate the role of plasticity in wrinkling and ratcheting behaviors of an SEI/electrode system. A coupled diffusion and finite deformation framework is formulated and numerically implemented as a user-element subroutine (UEL) to describe transient lithium diffusion and accompanying elastic–viscoplastic deformation of the electrode. It is found that concentration dependent properties and plastic deformation facilitate wrinkling in such a system. A wrinkled morphology may further lead to ratcheting and related failure under cycling. A phase diagram of four types of cyclic behaviorsis identified in terms of the charging rate and time. Our analysis suggests several potential strategies to avoid wrinkling and ratcheting instabilities, such as charging/discharging the electrode at a sufficiently slow rate, and/or introducing a thick artificial SEI with a pre-tension.

Tuning crack-inclusion interaction with an applied T -stress

The interaction between cracks and inclusions plays an important role in the fracture behavior of particulate composites. It is commonly recognized that an inclusion stiffer than the matrix tends to deflect an approaching crack away while a softer inclusion attracts the crack. Here, we demonstrate by analytical modeling and numerical simulations that the crack-inclusion interaction can be tuned by an applied T-stress. Under a sufficiently large compressive applied T-stress, cracks can be attracted to stiffer inclusions while repelled by softer ones, therefore reversing the conventional trend. Potential applications of this work include composite electrodes in lithium-ion batteries and hydraulic fracturing.
