Ultraviolet studies of nova-like variables with the IUE

KQ Mon is a new UX UMa-type nova-like variable. Optical spectra taken in 1978 reveal very shallow Balmer absorption lines and He I (wavelength 4471) absorption. There was no evidence of orbital variations but the appearance of the optical spectrum and the presence of low amplitude flickering suggested a strong similarity to CD-42 degrees 14462 (=V3885 Sgr) and other members of the UX UMa class. KQ Mon was observed at low dispersion with the IUE satellite. Six spectra taken with the short wavelength prime (SWP) camera are dominated by strong broad absorption lines due to N V, O I, Si III, Si IV, C IV, He II, N IV, and A1 III. There is little evidence of orbital phase modulation over the time baseline of the observations. Unlike UV observations of other UX UMa-type objects, KQ Mon exhibits no emission lines or P Cygni-type profiles and the velocity displacements appear to be smaller, suggesting the absence of a hot, high velocity wind characterizing other UX UMa stars. The relationship of KQ Mon to other UX UMa disk stars is discussed and a model is suggested to explain their observed properties and the lack of major outbursts.

The hot DO white dwarf HD 149499 B - Einstein redshift of a DB progenitor with carbon features

High-resolution IUE spectra of the hot DO white dwarf HD 149499B have been analyzed. The mass of the white dwarf needed to fit the measured gravitational redshift is 0.4-0.6 solar mass for a degenerate core composed of carbon based upon using a nonzero temperature mass-radius relation. The resonance doublet of C IV (1550 A) appears to be photospheric in origin, and two possible explanations for the presence of carbon in a hot DO white dwarf are discussed. The relationship of HD 149499B and other DO white dwarfs to the DB white dwarfs is also considered.

KQ Mon and the nature of the UX Ursa Majoris Nova-like variables

The UX Ursa Majoris stars form a group of nova-like variables with common photometric and spectroscopic properties. These objects appear to be related to the cataclysmic variables. However, there is no information that they have undergone major outbursts. The present investigation is concerned with a new object, KQ Mon, which has been included in a program of study conducted with the IUE satellite. A description of observations of KQ Mon is presented, and the relationship of this star to other UX UMa stars is examined. Attention is given to the nature of the UX Ursa Majoris stars. It is argued that the accretion rates of the UX UMa stars are higher than, for example, the dwarf novae during quiescence and that the higher accretion rates of the UX UMa stars are responsible for their lack of major outbursts.

Ultraviolet spectroscopy of the nova-like variable V3885 Sagittarii /= CD -42 deg 14462/

Low-dispersion long and short wavelength IUE spectra of the nova-like system V3885 Sgr were obtained on 1979 August 24 UT. The UV spectrum exhibits strong, high-temperature absorption lines of C III, C IV, He II, N IV, N V, and Si IV which all have relatively large negative velocities of 600-1000 km/s at their line centers. The C IV (1550 A) features shows a P Cygni-type profile with a blueshifted absorption line; the presence of the P Cygni-type feature strongly suggests a significant mass outflow from the system in the form of a hot stellar wind. The observed continuum fluxes are fitted with theoretical accretion disk model fluxes, and a tentative physical interpretation of the observed spectral properties is presented.

A spectrophotometric analysis of the hot helium-rich white dwarf HD 149499 B

A comprehensive analysis of the hot helium-rich white dwarf HD 149499 B is presented based on International Ultraviolet Explorer ultraviolet spectra along with available optical spectra and photometry. Line strengths, line profiles, and continuum fluxes are analyzed in terms of a new grid of hot, high-gravity stellar atmospheres of mixed composition. The line strengths furnish the strongest temperature and gravity diagnostics because they are not affected by the contamination of the white dwarf optical spectrum and photometric properties by the K0 V companion, 2.35 arcsec away. Wegner's (1978) classification of HD 149499 B as a DO star is confirmed.

The nova-like variable KQ Mon and the nature of the UX Ursa Majoris stars

The KQ Mon is a UX UMa type nova-like variable discovered by Howard Bond. Optical spectra taken by Bond in 1978 reveal very shallow Balmer absorption lines and He I absorption. Bond also did UBV and high speed photometry in 1978 and early 1981. There has been no evidence of orbital variations but the appearance of the optical spectrum and the presence of low amplitude flickering suggested a strong similarity to CD-42-14462 (=V3885 Sgr) and other members of the UX UMa class. Low dispersion observations of KQ Mon were made with the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite. Six spectra taken with the shot wavelength prime camera are dominated by strong broad absorption lines due to N V, O I, Si III, Si IV, C IV, He II, N IV, and Al III. There is little evidence of orbital phase modulation over the time baseline of the observations. Unlike UV observations of other UX UMa type objects, KQ Mon exhibits no emission lines or P Cygni type profiles and the velocity displacements appear to be smaller, suggesting the absence of a hot, high velocity wind characterizing other UX UMa stars. The relationship of KQ Mon to other UX UMa disk stars is discussed and a model is suggested to explain their observed properties and the lack of major outbursts.

High velocity gas outflow from the nova-like variable LSI 55 deg -8

Low and high dispersion International Ultraviolet Explorer observations and measurements of the optical brightness of LSI 55-8 taken on 5 December, 1981 are analyzed. The presence of the C IV resonance doublet showing a variable P Cygni type of profile with a blue shifted absorption component along with the blue shifted absorption features of the high temperature ions indicate the existence of outflowing hot plasma (i.e., a wind). An upper limit of the mass outflow rate was established from the shot wavelength edge of the C IV absorption. The normalized C IV profile is shown o be variable with the largest changes occurring in the relative strength and shape of the emission component. These changes appear to be systematic, and may be associated with the changing projection of the outflowing hot plasma against the disk as a function of orbital motion. LSI 55-8 demonstrates most of the spectral and photometric characteristics exhibited by the nova like, UX UMa type variables, as well as with the dwarf novae in outburst or standstill. The high accretion rate inferred from fitting the Williams theoretical disk model fluxes to IUE data support the hypothesis that LSI 55-8 and related nova like systems are in a state of prolonged outburst.

An ultraviolet investigation of the unusual eclipsing binary system FF AQR

A series of seven low dispersion IUE exposures in ultraviolet and wavelength regions obtained on December 6, 1981 during the eclipse of the subdwarf, during egress, and out of eclipse is analyzed. These observations and the binary phase at which they were made are shown on a schematic representation of the V-band light curve obtained in 1975. The depth in V is 0.15 mag. The circles are IUE V magnitudes from FES measures obtained during the observing run. They indicate an eclipse depth some 0.05 mag lower than expected, possibly due to difficulties with the color term in the FES calibration. The eclipse depths of Dworetsky in U, B and V were assumed in the calculations.

On the nature of the nova-like variable CD-42 deg 14462

Low dispersion long and short wavelength IUE spectra of the nova like system CD-42 deg 14462 were obtained on August 24 U.T. The short wave spectrum exhibits absorption features due to C III (lambda 1175), Lalpha 1216), NV (lambda1240), HeII (lambda 1640), SiIV (lambda1394), NIV (lambda1875) with CIV (lambda1550) as a P Cygni feature with blue shifted absorption suggesting the presence of material leaving the system. Possible interpretations of this object are discussed.

Orbital phase dependent IUE spectra of the nova like binary II Arietis

Nine low dispersion IUE spectra of the nova like binary TT Ari over its 3h17m orbital period were obtained. Four short wave spectra and five long wave spectra exhibit marked changes in line strength and continuum shape with orbital phase. The short wave spectra show the presence in absorption of C III, Lyman alpha, SiIII, NV, SiIV, CIV, HeII, AlIII, and NIV. The CIV shows a P Cygni profile on two of the spectra. Implications of these spectra for the nature of nova like variables are discussed.
