A High-Ceramic-Loading LATP–PVDF–Al 2 O 3 Composite Film for Lithium-Ion Batteries With Favorable Porous Microstructure and Enhanced Thermal Stability

A separator plays a crucial role in a Li-ion battery to carry liquid electrolytes while preventing short-circuiting between electrodes. Nevertheless, conventional commercial separators often exhibit poor wettability and are prone to shrink at elevated temperatures due to their limited thermal stability. Herein, we report a heat-resistant LATP–PVDF–Al 2 O 3 composite film with outstanding wetting performance. The thin film was prepared using ball mill mixing and tape-casting processes. Two solvents, NMP and glycerol, were applied to prepare the slurry, and a favorable microstructure in the film was created after drying. Here, the ionic conductivity of the film was tested at 1.39 mS cm –1 when paired with liquid electrolyte, almost double that of the commercial counterpart. The high ceramic loading of 70% improved both the thermal shrinkage resistance and dendrite inhibition of the membrane. When assembled in an NMC half-cell, the cycling capacity retentions of 92.8% and 92.1% are achieved after 50 cycles at 0.5 C and 1 C, demonstrating its capability to be used in Li-ion batteries.

Regional and Teleconnected Impacts of Solar Radiation‐Topography Interaction Over the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract Solar radiation‐topography interaction plays an important role in surface energy balance over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, the impacts of such interaction over the TP on climate locally and in the Asian regions remain unclear. This study uses the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) to evaluate the regional and teleconnected impacts of solar radiation‐topography interaction over the TP. Land‐atmosphere coupled experiments show that topography regulates the surface energy balance, snow processes, and surface climate over the TP across seasons. Accounting for solar radiation‐topography interaction improves E3SM simulation of surface climate. The winter cold bias in air temperature decreases from −4.57 to −3.79 K, and the wet bias in summer precipitation is mitigated in southern TP. The TP's solar radiation‐topography interaction further reduces the South and East Asian summer precipitation biases. Our results demonstrate the topographic roles in regional climate over the TP and highlight its teleconnected climate impacts.

LA100 Equity Strategies

LA100 Equity Strategies is a collaborative effort between LADWP, NREL, UCLA, and Kearns & West that employs an interdisciplinary approach utilizing distinct - but connected - research efforts informed and guided by the project Steering Committee, which met monthly through the duration of the project. Chapters 1 through 4 address recognition and procedural justice through recognition, process, and community strategies, while Chapters 5 through 12 address distributional justice through program and infrastructure strategies. Chapters 13 through 17 provide policy and program strategies. Each chapter provides data, methods, tools, insights, and strategies to help LADWP make data-driven, community-informed decisions for equitable investments and program development.

Characterization of the aerosol vertical distributions and their impacts on warm clouds based on multi-year ARM observations

Aerosol vertical distribution plays a crucial role in cloud development and thus precipitation since both aerosol indirect and semi-direct effects significantly depend on the relative position of aerosol layer in reference to cloud, but its precise influence on cloud remains unclear. In this study, we integrated multi-year Raman Lidar measurements of aerosol vertical profiles from the U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) facility with available Value-Added Products of cloud features to characterize aerosol vertical distributions and their impacts on warm clouds over the continental and marine ARM atmospheric observatories, i.e., Southern Great Plains (SGP) and Eastern North Atlantic (ENA). A unimodal seasonal distribution of aerosol optical depths (AODs) with a peak in summer is found at upper boundary layer over SGP, while a bimodal distribution is observed at ENA for the AODs at lower levels with a major winter-spring maximum. The diurnal mean of upper-level AOD at SGP shows a maximum in the early evening. According to the relative positions of aerosol layers to clouds we further identify three primary types of aerosol vertical distribution, including Random, Decreasing, and Bottom. It is found that the impacts of aerosols on cloud may or may not vary with aerosol vertical distribution depending on environmental conditions, as reflected by the wide variations of the relations between AOD and cloud properties. For example, as AOD increases, the liquid water paths (LWPs) tend to be reduced at SGP but enhanced at ENA. The relations of cloud droplet effective radius with AOD largely depend on aerosol vertical distributions, particularly showing positive values in the Random type under low-LWP condition (<50gm -2 ). In conclusion, the distinct features of aerosol-cloud interactions in relation to aerosol vertical distribution are likely attributed to the continental-marine contrast in thermodynamic environments and aerosol conditions between SGP and ENA.

The CuSPED Mission: CubeSat for GNSS Sounding of the Ionosphere-Plasmasphere Electron Density

The CubeSat for GNSS Sounding of Ionosphere-Plasmasphere Electron Density (CuSPED) is a 3U CubeSat mission concept that has been developed in response to the NASA Heliophysics program's decadal science goal of the determining of the dynamics and coupling of the Earth's magnetosphere, ionosphere, and atmosphere and their response to solar and terrestrial inputs. The mission was formulated through a collaboration between West Virginia University, Georgia Tech, NASA GSFC and NASA JPL, and features a 3U CubeSat that hosts both a miniaturized space capable Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver for topside atmospheric sounding, along with a Thermal Electron Capped Hemispherical Spectrometer (TECHS) for the purpose of in situ electron precipitation measurements. These two complimentary measurement techniques will provide data for the purpose of constraining ionosphere-magnetosphere coupling models and will also enable studies of the local plasma environment and spacecraft charging; a phenomenon which is known to lead to significant errors in the measurement of low-energy, charged species from instruments aboard spacecraft traversing the ionosphere. This paper will provide an overview of the concept including its science motivation and implementation.
