Godiva-IV Dosimetry Exercise 2022 (IER-538 CED4A Report)

This report presents the final results of IER 538, The International Nuclear Accident Dosimeter (NAD) Intercomparison Exercise with Godiva-IV. The purpose of the exercise, held in August of 2022, was to test participants’ NADs and dosimetry personnel to the dose estimation requirements established by ANSI/HPS-N13.3 Dosimetry for Criticality Accidents and DOE-STD-1098-2017, Radiological Control. Two prompt critical bursts of the Godiva critical assembly were used to simulate criticality accidents, and NADs from participating laboratories were placed at known locations around Godiva, mounted on either BOttle Manikin ABsorptions (BOMABs) phantoms (to simulate doses received by people) or plates (to simulate doses in free air). Similar exercises have been held in 2016 and 2018 using National Criticality Experiments Research Center’s (NCERC’s) Flattop and Godiva assemblies.

Comparison of Approach-to-Critical Results in Current and Pulse Mode for Systems with High Starter Neutron Rates

Reactors and critical assemblies use a variety of detection systems to monitor the neutron population. The count rate is proportional to the neutron flux present at the location of the detector. When such systems are placed external to an assembly, it is often assumed that the relative leakage multiplication will be proportional to the detector count rate (assuming that the source term, system geometry, and detector placement have not changed). Such systems are often used in an approach-to-critical during reactor startup to ensure that the critical configuration is well predicted. Various types of detectors have been used during an approach-to-critical. These include 3 He, BF 3 , ion chambers, fission chambers, and fission foils. Any of these types of systems (or others) should work well when adequate counting statistics are available. These detector systems can be operated in either pulse or current mode. The National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) has two detection systems that are commonly used in critical assembly operations. The start-up (referred to as "SU" in this work) system is made up of 3 He proportional counters in pulse mode and the linear counter system (referred to as "LC" in this work) consists of compensated ion-chambers in current mode. Typically the SU system is used for approach-to-critical operations and the LC system is only used at/above delayed critical ( k eff = 1). This work investigates the use of the LC system for an approach-to-critical. It has been long hypothesized that such an approach would be feasible for systems with high starter neutron rates.

Rossi-α measurements on a system consisting of weapons grade plutonium moderated by polyethylene

A critical experiment was performed on the Planet critical assembly to provide nuclear data in a thermal neutron spectrum, in particular to provide experimental data to help validate thermal scattering laws for polyethylene. The fuel consisted of layers of weapons grade plutonium plates that were moderated and reflected by various thicknesses of high density polyethylene. Rossi-α measurements were performed on a slightly modified configuration from the configuration used for the critical measurements. The Rossi-α measurement techniques are discussed and results are presented. The neutron spectrum appears to be extremely thermal when compared to other thermal systems and the configuration will be able to validate thermal scattering law.

Benchmark evaluation of one dimensional array of HEU moderated and reflected by Lucite

The evaluation of two HEU-Lucite experiments is presented. The critical experiments were performed using the Planet Universal Critical Assembly Machine at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2019. In these experiments, HEU foils were interleaved with Lucite in a column stack and were moderated and reflected from the square Lucite plates. The neutron data produced were used to approximate the multiplication of each measured configuration. The evaluation of the experiments using calculational techniques is presented in the paper. A Monte-Carlo computational model to be used with MCNP6 was developed for the determination of uncertainties and the effects of various uncertainties on the multiplication factor were studied. The evaluation of the benchmark was performed for comparison of calculation results with the experimental data and validation of calculation techniques in particular the newly available thermal scattering data for the Lucite material. The sensitivity studies include parametric variations of material composition and geometry. Experimental uncertainties were low, with the overall height of the HEU/Lucite stack being the largest contributor to the overall uncertainty in k{sub eff}. (authors)

Experiment Logistics for an International Blind Intercomparison Exercise for Nuclear Accident Dosimetry at Godiva-IV

This document is the Experimental Set-up and Design (CED-3A) Report for IER-538, “Full Dosimetry Exercise Around Godiva Reactors” The report discusses the structure of the exercise consisting of two critical excursions, identifying the participating laboratories and their points of contact. The report also includes details of all dosimetry each laboratory will submit to be placed in proximity to Godiva-IV on aluminum plates or BOMAB phantoms. Each laboratory list the counting and spectroscopy equipment to be utilized at the LLNL NAD Laboratory in Mercury. The exercise is tentatively scheduled for one week in fiscal year 2022.

Sensitivity-based Similarity Metrics for New Experiment Design Optimization

The nuclear data used in advanced reactor simulations requires validation. Data from nuclear criticality experiments can provide this validation. New nuclear criticality experiment design requires extensive knowledge and expert judgement such that the experimental design parameters are selected in such a way to keep the experiment subcritical. To aide in this experimental design process, professionals can utilize sensitivity and uncertainty analysis. Sensitivity and uncertainty analysis relies on matching new application experiments with currently existing benchmark experiments. Currently, there is functionality in the Whisper 1.1 software package to calculate a similarity metric based on neutron multiplication factor sensitivity coefficients between a new application designed by the user and existing International Criticality Safety Benchmark Experiment Project (ICSBEP) benchmarks. The Whisper 1.1 software package is included in Monte Carlo N-Particle ® Code Version 6.21 (MCNP ® 6.2). This work is geared toward expanding this capability to new similarity metrics based on beta-effective sensitivity coefficients and reactivity coefficient sensitivity coefficients. While the investigation of these sensitivity coefficients is presented in detail in separate works at this same conference, this work will be primarily focused on studying the similarity metrics in more detail. These similarity metrics will then be incorporated into the optimization algorithms used for experiment design in EUCLID (Experiments Underpinned by Computational Learning for Improvements in nuclear Data), which is a Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) project designed to constrain nuclear data of interest, such that adjustments can be made to possible inaccuracies. A more detailed optimization can be subsequently performed by breaking down these similarity metrics by isotope, reaction, and energy.
