Electrochemistry in the Large Tunnels of Lithium Postspinel Compounds

Lithium spinels (Li MM 'O 4 ) are an important class of mixed-cation materials that have found uses in batteries, catalysis, and optics. Postspinels are a series of related framework structures with the AMM 'O 4 host composition that are formed with larger A -site cations, typically under high pressure. Postspinels have one-dimensional tunnel structures with pores that are larger than those in spinel and triangular in cross-section, but they are relatively unexplored as intercalation electrodes. While lithium postspinels have been previously found to be thermodynamically stable only at high pressures, we have identified a synthetic pathway that produces the lithium-containing materials at ambient pressure using an ion-exchange process from the corresponding sodium postspinels. Here, in this work, we report the synthesis and a survey of the electrochemical properties of 10 new lithium CaFe 2 O 4 -type postspinel compounds where M = Mn 3+ , V 3+ , Cr 3+ , Rh 3+ , Fe 2+ , Mg 2+ , Co 2+ and M ' = Ti 4+ and/or Sn 4+ . Although complete delithiation is not achieved during electrochemical cycling, many of the lithium postspinels have substantial charge storage capacity in Li battery cells owing to the ability of the large framework tunnels to accommodate more than one lithium ion per formula unit. Multiple redox couples are accessed for LiMnSnO 4 , Li 0.96 Mn 0.96 Sn 1.04-x Ti x O 4 , Li 0.96 V 0.96 Ti 1.04 O 4 , Li 0.96 Cr 0.96 Ti 1.04 O 4 , and LiFe 0.5 Ti 1.5 O 4 . Compositions with moderate or poor lithium cyclability are also discussed for comparison. Redox mechanisms and trends are identified by comparing this new redox-active framework to related spinels, ramsdellites, and 'Na 0.44 MnO 2 ' structures, and from density functional theory (DFT) electronic structures. Operando diffraction shows complex structural responses to lithium insertion and extraction in this postspinel framework. A DFT framework was proposed to identify promising lithium postspinel phases that could be accessed metastably under ambient pressure conditions and to assess their stability to lithium insertion and extraction. This work suggests that CaFe 2 O 4 -type hosts are a promising new class of lithium-ion energy storage materials.

Two Distinct Cu(II)-V(IV) Superexchange Interactions with Similar Bond Angles in a Triangular ?CuV2? Fragment

The strength and sign of superexchange interactions are often predicted on the basis of the bond angles between magnetic ions, but complications may arise in situations with a nontrivial arrangement of the magnetic orbitals. We report on a novel molecular tetramer compound [Cu(H2O)dmbpy]2[V2O2F8] (dmbpy = 4,4 '-dimethyl-2,2 ' bipyridyl) that is composed of triangular "CuV2" fragments and displays a spin gap behavior. By combining first-principles calculations and electronic models, we reveal that superexchange Cu-V interactions carry drastically diHerent coupling strengths along two Cu-F-V pathways with comparable bond angles in the triangular "CuV2" fragment. Counterintuitively, their strong disparity is found to originate from the restricted symmetry of the half-filled Cu dx2-y2 orbital stabilized by the crystal field, leading to one dominating antiferromagnetic Cu-V coupling in each fragment. We revisit the magnetic properties of the reported spin-gapped chain compound [enH2]Cu(H2O)2[V2O2F8] (enH2 = ethylene diammonium) containing similar triangular "CuV2" fragments, and the magnetic behavior of the molecular tetramer and the chain compounds is rationalized as that of weakly coupled spin dimers and spin trimers, respectively. This work demonstrates that fundamentally diHerent magnetic couplings can be observed between magnetic ions with similar bond angles in a single spin motif, thus providing a strategy to introduce various exchange interactions combined with low dimensionality in heterometallic Cu(II)-V(IV) compounds.

Expanding the Ambient-Pressure Phase Space of CaFe 2 O 4 -Type Sodium Postspinel Host–Guest Compounds

CaFe 2 O 4 -type sodium postspinels (Na-CFs), with Na + occupying tunnel sites, are of interest as prospective battery electrodes. While many compounds of this structure type require high-pressure synthesis, several compounds are known to form at ambient pressure. Here we report a large expansion of the known Na-CF phase space at ambient pressure, having successfully synthesized NaCrTiO 4 , NaRhTiO 4 , NaCrSnO 4 , NaInSnO 4 , NaMg 0.5 Ti 1.5 O 4 , NaFe 0.5 Ti 1.5 O 4 , NaMg 0.5 Sn 1.5 O 4 , NaMn 0.5 Sn 1.5 O 4 , NaFe 0.5 Sn 1.5 O 4 , NaCo 0.5 Sn 1.5 O 4 , NaNi 0.5 Sn 1.5 O 4 , NaCu 0.5 Sn 1.5 O 4 , NaZn 0.5 Sn 1.5 O 4 , NaCd 0.5 Sn 1.5 O 4 , NaSc 1.5 Sb 0.5 O 4 , Na 1.16 In 1.18 Sb 0.66 O 4 , and several solid solutions. In contrast to earlier reports, even cations that are strongly Jahn–Teller active (e.g., Mn 3+ and Cu 2+ ) can form Na-CFs at ambient pressure when combined with Sn 4+ rather than with the smaller Ti 4+ . Order and disorder are probed at the average and local length-scales with synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Strong ordering of framework cations between the two framework sites is not observed, except in the case of Na 1.16 In 1.18 Sb 0.66 O 4 . This compound is the first example of an Na-CF that contains Na + in both the tunnel and framework sites, reminiscent of Li-rich spinels. Trends in the thermodynamic stability of the new compounds are explained on the basis of crystal-chemistry and density functional theory (DFT). Further DFT calculations examine the relative stability of the CF versus spinel structures at various degrees of sodium extraction in the context of electrochemical battery reactions.

Solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance of spin‐9/2 nuclei 115 In and 209 Bi in functional inorganic complex oxides

Abstract Indium and bismuth are technologically important elements, in particular as oxides for optoelectronic applications. 115 In and 209 Bi are both I = 9/2 nuclei with high natural abundances and moderately high frequencies but large nuclear electric quadrupole moments. Leveraging the quadrupolar interaction as a measure of local symmetry and polyhedral distortions for these nuclei could provide powerful insights on a range of applied materials. However, the absence of reported nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters on these nuclei, particularly in oxides, hinders their use by the broader materials community. In this contribution, solid‐state 115 In and 209 Bi NMR of three recently discovered quaternary bismuth or indium oxides are reported, supported by density functional theory calculations, numerical simulations, diffraction and additional multinuclear ( 27 Al, 69,71 Ga, and 121 Sb) solid‐state NMR measurements. The compounds LiIn 2 SbO 6 , BiAlTeO 6 , and BiGaTeO 6 are measured without special equipment at 9.4 T, demonstrating that wideline techniques such as the QCPMG pulse sequence and frequency‐stepped acquisition can enable straightforward extraction of quadrupolar tensor information in I = 9/2 115 In and 209 Bi even in sites with large quadrupolar coupling constants. Relationships are described between the NMR observables and local site symmetry. These are amongst the first reports of the NMR parameters of 115 In, 121 Sb, and 209 Bi in oxides.

Expanding the chemistry of borates with functional [BO 2 ]- anions

More than 3900 crystalline borates, including borate minerals and synthetic inorganic borates, in addition to a wealth of industrially-important boron-containing glasses, have been discovered and characterized. Of these compounds, 99.9 % contain only the traditional triangular BO 3 and tetrahedral BO 4 units, which polymerize into superstructural motifs. Herein, a mixed metal K 5 Ba 2 (B 10 O 17 ) 2 (BO 2 ) with linear BO 2 structural units was obtained, pushing the boundaries of structural diversity and providing a direct strategy toward the maximum thresholds of birefringence for optical materials design. 11 B solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a ubiquitous tool in the study of glasses and optical materials; here, density functional theory-based NMR crystallography guided the direct characterization of BO 2 structural units. The full anisotropic shift and quadrupolar tensors of linear BO 2 were extracted from K 5 Ba 2 (B 10 O 17 ) 2 (BO 2 ) containing BO 2 , BO 3 , and BO 4 and serve as guides to the identification of this powerful moiety in future and, potentially, previously-characterized borate minerals, ceramics, and glasses.

Titanium Niobium Oxide: From Discovery to Application in Fast-Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are essential for portable technology and are now poised to disrupt a century of combustion-based transportation. The electrification revolution could eliminate our reliance on fossil fuels and enable a clean energy future; advanced batteries would facilitate this transition. However, owing to the demanding performance, cost, and safety requirements, it is challenging to translate new materials from laboratory prototypes to industrial-scale products. This Perspective describes that journey for a new lithium-ion battery anode material, TiNb 2 O 7 (TNO). TNO is intended as an alternative to graphite or Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 with better rate and safety characteristics than the former and higher energy density than the latter. The high capacity of TNO stems from the multielectron redox of Nb 5+ to Nb 3+ , its operating voltage window well above the Li + /Li reduction potential prevents lithium dendrite formation, and its open crystal structure leads to high-power performance. Nevertheless, the creation of a practical TNO anode was nonlinear and nontrivial. Its history is built on 30 years of fundamental science that preceded its application as a battery anode, and its battery development included a nearly 30-year gap. The insights and lessons contained in this Perspective, many of them acquired firsthand, serve two purposes: (i) to unite the disparate studies of TiNb 2 O 7 into a coherent modern understanding relevant to its application as a battery material and (ii) to highlight briefly some of the challenges faced when scaling up a new material that affect TiNb 2 O 7 as well as new electrode candidates more generally.

Translating a Material Discovery into a Commercial Product in the Modern Lithium-ion Battery Market

Lithium-ion batteries are essential for portable technology and are now poised to disrupt a century of combustion-based transportation. The electrification revolution could eliminate our reliance on fossil fuels and enable a clean energy future; advanced batteries would facilitate this transition. However, owing to the demanding performance, cost, and safety requirements, it is challenging to translate new materials from laboratory prototypes to commercial products. This Perspective describes that journey toward commercialization for a new lithium-ion battery anode material, TiNb2O7 (TNO). TNO is intended as an alternative to graphite or Li4Ti5O12 with better rate and safety characteristics than the former, and higher energy density than the latter. The high capacity of TNO stems from multielectron redox of Nb5+ to Nb3+, its operating voltage window well above Li+/Li reduction potential prevents lithium dendrite formation, and its open crystal structure leads to high-power performance. Nevertheless, the creation of a practical TNO anode was non-linear and non-trivial. Its history is built on 30 years on fundamental science that preceded its application as a battery, and its battery development included a nearly 30-year gap. The insights and lessons 2 contained in this Perspective, many of them acquired firsthand, serve two purposes: (i) to unite the disparate studies of TiNb2O7 into a coherent modern understanding relevant to its application as a battery material and (ii) to highlight some of the considerations of commercializing a new material that affect TiNb2O7 as well as new electrode candidates more generally.
