Conceptual Design of the Moderator Test Station at the Spallation Neutron Source

We describe the Moderator Test Station (MTS), under construction at the Spallation Neutron Source. We will leverage the Beam Test Facility (BTF) at the Spallation Neutron Source to provide a moderator neutronics test stand with which we will verify the anticipated performance gains expected and required from the innovative moderator concepts central to the SNS Second Target Station (STS) and the future of the First Target Station (FTS). These concepts include large-volume para-hydrogen moderators and high-brightness tube moderators. The MTS will add to the existing BTF a proton beam chopper similar to that already used in the SNS at the RFQ exit (the so-called MEBT chopper), various proton beam transport components, a neutron-producing target, a cryogenic moderator test stand, a reflector-shielding assembly, and a performance assessment neutron beamline. The MTS will provide the ability to test a wide variety of moderators in a prototypic configuration, simultaneously measuring the neutronic performance of the moderator concept central to the anticipated STS gains and developing the instrumentation necessary to provide that performance in a production environment. The presentation will describe the MTS, its progress, and the way we optimize the prototypic nature of the moderators we will test.

Optical Simulations for the VENUS Neutron Imaging Instrument

The VENUS Neutron Imaging instrument at the Spallation Neutron Source has gone through a multitude of optical design changes since its original conception. The goal of this report is to quantify the performance of the most recent optical design and provide insight into potential improvements to this design as needed to ensure optimal performance of the instrument. The results will come in the form of a refined and well developed simulation that provides as best a representation of the performance of the instrument as reasonably achievable. This simulation will be available in a repository alongside relevant simulation output needed to inform any future decisions on the design of the instrument.

GEOMWRITER - A Workflow for Automatically Generating MCNP Geometry for Neutron Guide Simulations

This report describes the functionality of the geomwriter.py script, which is a python script for producing complex MCNP CSG geometries from the IGES CAD format. It is specifically written to handle neutron supermirror guides, but can handle more complex objects through utilizing a convex hull algorithm. This work flow reduces the amount of time spent on generating the surface definitions for a complex neutron guide system with hundreds of segments such that changes to the neutron guide system design in McStas can be rapidly incorporated into an MCNP model and integrated with the shielding geometry present in that model.
