Portable reflectance spectrometer

A portable reflectance spectrometer is disclosed. The spectrometer essentially includes an optical unit and an electronic recording unit. The optical unit includes a pair of thermoelectrically-cooled detectors, for detecting total radiance and selected radiance projected through a circular variable filter wheel, and is capable of operating to provide spectral data in the range 0.4 to 2.5 micrometers without requiring coventional substitution of filter elements. The electronic recording unit includes power supplies, amplifiers, and digital recording electronics designed to permit recordation of data on tape casettes. Both the optical unit and electronic recording unit are packaged to be manually portable.

High resolution infrared absorptivities for gaseous chlorine nitrate

High resolution infrared absorptivities of chlorine nitrate (ClONO2) are required in order to quantitatively evaluate, by examination of infrared spectra obtained recently from balloon-borne spectrometers, the possible occurrence of this compound in the stratosphere. In the present study, infrared absorptivities for four absorption bands of gaseous ClONO2 have been measured at 0.0625 per cm spectral resolution with a Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) system. Spectra were obtained at two pressures (0.05 and 1.05 torr) of pure ClONO2 and with 125 torr of N2 added to a 0.50 torr sample. Absorptivities for a range of spectral resolutions (0.0625, 0.125, 0.25 and 0.50 per cm) have been calculated from the data.

Inherent time delay for dielectric breakdown in shock-loaded x-cut quartz

Dielectric breakdown in shock-loaded x-cut quartz is examined under conditions of both impact loading and Q-switched laser-irradiation loading. It is observed that breakdown is characterized by an inherent time delay which depends on the magnitude of the electric field. For pulse duration less than about 30 ns, dielectric breakdown is not observed.
