Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Navigation Strategy for Support of Mars 2020 Mission's Entry, Descent and Landing Sequence

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter provided primary relay support during the Mars 2020 mission’s entry, descent, and landing sequence on February 18, 2021. To position the orbiter for relay support during this sequence, two propulsive maneuvers were performed: the first on September 2, 2020 and the second on January 20, 2021. This paper documents the maneuver strategy developed by the navigation team for positioning the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to within phasing requirements to support the Mars 2020 mission during landing and provides details on how well those phasing requirements were met.

Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter navigation strategy for support of InSight lander's entry, descent, and landing sequence

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) provided primary relay support for surface operations of the InSight mission immediately after it landed on Mars on November26,2018. To position MRO for relay support during InSight Entry, Descent and Landing (EDL), two propulsive maneuvers were performed in August and October 2018. This paper documents the maneuver strategy employed by the MRO Navigation Team to support the InSight EDL sequence.

Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Aerobraking Navigation Operation

After a seven-month interplanetary cruise, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter arrived at Mars and executed a 1.0 km/s Mars Orbit Insertion (MOI) maneuver. The post-MOI orbit was highly elliptical with a 35 hour, 428 km x 45000 km altitude orbit. To establish a useful science orbit, the navigation team used an aerobraking technique to guide the spacecraft into a 2-hour, 255 km x 320 km altitude orbit. This paper details the aerobraking navigation operation strategy and flight results. It also describes the aerobraking key requirements and navigation challenges.

Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Aerobraking Daily Operations and Collision Avoidance

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter reached Mars on March 10, 2006 and performed a Mars orbit insertion maneuver of 1 km/s to enter into a large elliptical orbit. Three weeks later, aerobraking operations began and lasted about five months. Aerobraking utilized the atmospheric drag to reduce the large elliptical orbit into a smaller, near circular orbit. At the time of MRO aerobraking, there were three other operational spacecraft orbiting Mars and the navigation team had to minimize the possibility of a collision. This paper describes the daily operations of the MRO navigation team during this time as well as the collision avoidance strategy development and implementation.

Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Interplanetary Navigation

This viewgraph presentation reviews the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) interplanetary navigation. An interplanetary overview including dynamic models of outgassing, small force calibration and trending, solar radiation pressure and trajectory correction maneuvers are also described.

Magellan navigation using X-band differenced Doppler during Venus mapping phase

This paper describes Magellan navigation procedures and performance during the first 1.5 years of mapping. It presents the results of studies comparing several orbit determination methods performed with and without X-band (8.4 GHz) differenced Doppler tracking data. X-band differenced Doppler has been used as a primary navigation data-type for the first time. It has been found to be a significant aid in efficiently meeting orbiter navigation requirements during the Magellan spacecraft's Venus radar-mapping phase.
