Laser pulse detection method and apparatus

A sensor is described for detecting the difference in phase of a pair of returned light pulse components, such as two components of a light pulse of an optical gyro. In an optic gyro, the two light components have passed in opposite directions through a coil of optical fiber, with the difference in phase of the returned light components determining the intensity of light shining on the sensor. The sensor includes a CCD (charge coupled device) that receives the pair of returned light components to generate a charge proportional to the number of photons in the received light. The amount of the charge represents the phase difference between the two light components. At a time after the transmission of the light pulse and before the expected time of arrival of the interfering light components, charge accumulating in the CCD as a result of reflections from components in the system, are repeatedly removed from the CCD, by transferring out charges in the CCD and dumping these charges.

Polymer Bonding of Optical Fibers

Optical waveguies coupled through their sides. In fiber etching process bonded length for coupling determined by observing optical output powers in two fibers. Surface tension of etchant remaining between two fibes holds then in contact when raised from solution for power measurement. When fibers reimmersed, they separate allowing free access by etchant.

Integrated optics for fiber gyro's

Expected advantages of incorporating integrated optical waveguide components into fiber gyroscopes are summarized. The structural-simplicity benefits which can be achieved through the use of solid-state lasers, and integrated and fiber optics are examined; angular rate noise and random walk drift for the current technology in the 0.84-micron wavelength region are reported as 0.00001 deg/sec and 0.0002 deg/hr to the 1/2, respectively. The state-of-the-art in the pertinent materials research is reviewed; lithium niobate, suggested to be used as a waveguide substrate material, is noted to have a complex chemistry that is not yet fully understood. However, most of the optical and electrooptical components of a fiber gyro are conceptually understood and have been demonstrated.

Wide area detection system: Conceptual design study

An integrated sensor for traffic surveillance on mainline sections of urban freeways is described. Applicable imaging and processor technology is surveyed and the functional requirements for the sensors and the conceptual design of the breadboard sensors are given. Parameters measured by the sensors include lane density, speed, and volume. The freeway image is also used for incident diagnosis.
