JEM-EF Space Station Carrier System

The NASA/GSFC Shuttle Small Payloads Projects Office (SSPPO) is developing a carrier system for accommodating scientific and applications payloads on the Japanese Experiment Module - Exposed Facility (JEM-EF). The carrier structure provides for flexible mounting of payload instrumentation in nadir, zenith, or limb-viewing positions. Avionics capability will be provided to accommodate up to four payloads with independent power and signal connections. The JEM-EF carrier builds on over 15 years of experience in developing and operating the "Hitchhiker" carriers used on the Space Shuttle. This paper describes the carrier system, potential payload configurational and related GSFC activities.

Space Experiment Module: A new low-cost capability for education payloads

The Space Experiment Module (SEM) concept is one of a number of education initiatives being pursued by the NASA Shuttle Small Payloads Project (SSPP) in an effort to increase educational access to space by means of Space Shuttle Small Payloads and associated activities. In the SEM concept, NASA will provide small containers ('modules') which can accommodate small zero-gravity experiments designed and constructed by students. A number, (nominally ten), of the modules will then be flown in an existing Get Away Special (GAS) carrier on the Shuttle for a flight of 5 to 10 days. In addition to the module container, the NASA carrier system will provide small amounts of electrical power and a computer system for controlling the operation of the experiments and recording experiment data. This paper describes the proposed SEM carrier system and program approach.

Hitchhiker capabilities

A carrier system has been developed for economical and quick response flight of small attached payloads on the space shuttle. Hitchhiker can accommodate up to 750 lb of customer payloads in canisters or mounted to an exposed side-mount plate, or up to 1200 lb mounted on a cross-bay structure. The carrier connects to the orbiter's electrical systems and provides up to six customers with standard electrical services including power, real time telemetry and commands. A transparent data and command system concept is employed to allow the customer to easily use his own ground support equipment and personnel to control his payload during integration and flight operations. A general description of the Hitchhiker program and the Shuttle Payload of Opportunity Carrier (SPOC) is given and future enhancements are outlined.
